  • Course Outline and Syllabus the Fab Four and the Stones: How America Surrendered to the Advance Guard of the British Invasion
Course Outline and Syllabus The Fab Four and the Stones: How America surrendered to the advance guard of the British Invasion. This six-week course takes a closer look at the music that inspired these bands, their roots-based influences, and their output of inspired work that was created in the 1960’s. Topics include: The early days, 1960-62: London, Liverpool and Hamburg: Importing rhythm and blues and rockabilly from the States…real rock and roll bands—what a concept! Watch out, world! The heady days of 1963: Don’t look now, but these guys just might be more than great cover bands…and they are becoming very popular…Beatlemania takes off. We can write songs; 1964: the rock and roll band as a creative force. John and Paul, their yin and yang-like personal and musical differences fueling their creative tension, discover that two heads are better than one. The Stones, meanwhile, keep cranking out covers, and plot their conquest of America, one riff at a time. The middle periods, 1965-66: For the boys from Liverpool, waves of brilliant albums that will last forever—every cut a memorable, sing-along winner. While for the Londoners, an artistic breakthrough with their first all--original record. Mick and Keith’s tempestuous relationship pushes away band founder Brian Jones; the Stones are established as a force in the music world. Prisoners of their own success, 1967-68: How their popularity drove them to great heights—and lowered them to awful depths. It’s a long way from three chords and a cloud of dust.

  • HITMAKERS – 6 X 60M Drama
HITMAKERS – 6 x 60m drama LOGLINE In Sixties London, the managers of the Beatles, the Stones and the Who struggle to marry art and commerce in a bid to become the world’s biggest hitmakers. CHARACTERS Andrew Oldham (19), Beatles publicist and then manager of the Rolling Stones. A flash, mouthy trouble-maker desperate to emulate Brian Epstein’s success. His bid to create the anti-Beatles turns him from Epstein wannabe to out-of-control anarchist, corrupted by the Stones lifestyle and alienated from his girlfriend Sheila. For him, everything is a hustle – work, relationships, his own psyche – but always underpinned by a desire to surprise and entertain. Suffers from (initially undiagnosed) bi-polar disorder, which is exacerbated by increasing drug use, with every high followed by a self-destructive low. Nobody in the Sixties burns brighter: his is the legend that’s never been told on screen, the story at the heart of Hitmakers. Brian Epstein (28), the manager of the Beatles. A man striving to create with the Beatles the success he never achieved in entertainment himself (as either actor or fashion designer). Driven by a naive, egotistical sense of destiny, in the process he basically invents what we think of as the modern pop manager. He’s an emperor by the age of 30 – but this empire is constantly at risk of being undone by his desperate (and – to him – shameful) homosexual desires for inappropriate men, and the machinations of enemies jealous of his unprecedented, upstart success. At first he sees Andrew as a protege and confidant, but progressively as a threat.

  • Mark's Music Notes for December 2011…
MARK’S MUSIC NOTES FOR DECEMBER 2011… The Black Keys follow up their excellent 2010 album Brothers with the upbeat El Camino, another great album that commercial radio will probably ignore just like it did with Brothers. In a day and age where CD sales are on the decline, record labels continue to re-issue classic titles with proven track records in new incarnations that include unreleased material, re-mastered sound, and often lavish box sets. Though not yet included in Music Notes, Pink Floyd and Queen both had their entire catalogs re-vamped this year, and they sound great. Jethro Tull’s classic Aqualung album has been expanded, re-mixed and re-mastered with the level of care and quality that should be the standard for all re-issues. The Rolling Stones have already released expanded remasters and box sets on Exile On Main Street and Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, and now their top selling album, Some Girls has received the same treatment. Be Bop Deluxe is a 1970’s band that most readers will be unfamiliar with. They never had any mainstream success in the U.S., but the band had several great albums, and their entire studio catalog has recently been remastered and compiled into a concise box set. The Black Keys – El Camino Vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and Drummer Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, have said that they have been listening to a lot of Rolling Stones lately, and they set out to record a more direct rock and roll album than their last album, Brothers was.

  • Linn Lounge Presents... the Rolling Stones
Linn Lounge Presents... The Rolling Stones Welcome to Linn Lounge presents… ‘The Rolling Stones’ Tonight’s album, ‘Grr’ tells the fascinating ongoing story of the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band In The World. It features re-masters of some of the ‘Stones’ iconic recordings. It also contains 2 brand new tracks which constitute the first time Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood have all been together in the recording studio since 2005. This album will be played in Studio Master - the highest quality download available anywhere, letting you hear the recording exactly as it left the studio. So sit back, relax and enjoy as you embark on a voyage through tonight’s musical journey. MUSIC – Muddy Waters, Rollin’ Stone via Spotify (Play 30secs then turn down) It all started with Muddy Waters. A chance meeting between 2 old friends at Dartford railway station marked the beginning of 50 years of rock and roll. In the early 1950s, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were childhood friends and classmates at Wentworth Primary School in Kent until their families moved apart.[8] In 1960, the pair met again on their way to college at Dartford railway station. The Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records that Jagger carried revealed a mutual interest. They began forming a band with Dick Taylor and Brian Jones from Blues Incorporated. This band also contained two other future members of the Rolling Stones: Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts.[11] So how did the name come about? Well according to Richards, Jones christened the band during a phone call to Jazz News.

  • Abkco Records Finds Atc Monitors Critical
ABKCO RECORDS FINDS ATC MONITORS CRITICAL ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company) SCM50 monitors used by ABKCO Records for the Sam Cooke Re- mastered Series. NEW YORK, NEW YORK: Recently in the news with their landmark reissue of 22 early Rolling Stones and five Sam Cooke albums on hybrid Super Audio Compact Disc, ABKCO Records has installed a stereo pair of ATC SCM50ASL Pro active three-way monitor speakers in the company's pre-production listening environment. Ideally suited to medium-sized rooms, the ATC SCM50 reference monitors are primarily used for such critical tasks as archive research, track sequencing, and quality control of digitally re-mastered material at ABKCO's Manhattan facility. They're very musical and have great mid-range, and they're so accurate," says chief audio engineer and tape archive researcher Teri Landi of the ATC monitors. ATC manufactures all of its monitor system component parts in-house, including the company's unique SM75-150S mid-range soft dome driver, which is combined with an ATC 234mm (9-inch) Super Linear bass driver in the SCM50. The ATC Super Linear woofer is the best woofer in production anywhere. The active design of the SCM50 ensures optimum matching of six MOS-FET amp blocks to the drivers. In addition to a flat reference response, an LF contour control offers five bass boost settings. The facility that I have here is a pre-production studio which contains vintage and state-of-the-art equipment," she explains. One of Landi's tasks is to research the company's archive of original analog recordings.
