A sensation ally exciting side that will go all the way. LIVING A LIE - A1 Martino (Capitol) Bigger nationally on the charts than its performance bo date in the South. But, it climbs into the WCAW, Charleston, W. Va. ’Soaring 68' at //^6. I believe you’ll get good results if you get on it now. TALK BACK TREMBLING LIPS - Johnny Tillotson (MGM) Racking up fairly good sales. Most areas report good request activity. #32 at WPGC, Washington, D.C. and Dick Reus-WDXY, Sumter, S.C. says it's headed for his chart. FAITH - Wallace Brothers (Royal) It continues to build in the three areas where records are available. Several labels are interested in it, but until then, a copy is hard to come by. EVERYBODY LET’S DANCE - Jimmy Hughes (Fame) Hot Scott-WGIV, Charlotte.got on this several weeks ago. It's his #2 request. Good play in Alabama and Georgia. GIRLS GROW UP FASTER THAN BOYS - Cookies (Dimension) Sounds better every time I hear it. Should come along with air play. BE MAD LITTLE GIRL/SHJCE YOU BEEN GONE - Bobby Darin (Capitol) Seems destined for split ploy* At this point it's hard to tell if either side has the 'stuff' hits are made of. TURN AROUND - Dick and Dee Dee (WB) Strong request activity at WQXI, Atlanta. Already a chart item at WFGC, Washington, DC. This is a record! YOUR OTHER LOVE - Connie Francis (MCM) Dick'Starr-WFUN, Miami reports this as one of the week’s top sellers. It would be even bigger if more people played it, more often. A proven hit and her best, in quite some time. THE CLOCK - Rod Bernard (Hall) Has that 'I'm lonely, won't someone love me' sound that teenage girls seem to go for two or three times a year, every year. His last record did moderately well in Louisiana. This could go everywhere. Rod is our correspondent at KVOL, Lafayette, La. He has no idea his record is recommended by the SMS, so I suggest you write him for a copy. FOR YOUR SWEET LOVE - Cascades (RCA) Title from Rick Nelson'6 best selling album... but it captures the "Rhythm Of The Rain" sound. Pick it! FORGET HIM - Bobby Rydell (Cameo) This is it! He's off the ground. Requests at WAKE, Atlanta; WSEF, Hickory, N.C. and at WEKR, Fayetteville, Tennessee. Bob Reich predicts it will be his biggest since "Wildwood Days." I agree. THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT - Angels (Smash) This is the side. Don't be afraid to go with it. It's sure to be big...with requests and sales. THE MARVELOUS TOY - Chad Mitchell (Mercury) Larry Gar-WLBG, Laurens, S.C. feels this will be a strong item. He's not alone. Many other picks for it. It deserves the same attention at your station. QUICKSAND - Martha & The Vandellas (Gordy) Three in a row. Don't bet against it..... you'll lose. A 'BOSS' record. NEED TO BELONG - Jerry Butler (Vee Jay) There's some activity on the flip in Augusta. It's an old side, taken from the "He Will Break Your Heart" album. This side will be his biggest in a! long time. Hamp Swain-WIBB, Macon says it's a top five seller in his town. BABY'S GONE - Gene Thomas (UA) You just don't believe me. This is $1 now in Houston and breaking in other Texas markets. These same places have created a good hal f dozen of the biggest hits this year in the South and nationally. It's made the charts in the smaller markets that latched on to our first tip to this several weeks ago. It's not going to hit the top overnight, but don't -wait until it's too late. THE IMPOSSIBLE HAPPENED - Peggy March (RCA) My mistake, though no one caught it last week. This is her fourth record, not her third, but it's a sure bet to be her third hit record. LIVE YOUNG - Troy Donahue (WB) From his latest film. Suggest you contact the local theater where it will play and tie-in with the picture. Company is strong for radio promotion for this record and the forthcoming film. A top request for Bill Johnson- WLAQ, Rome. POPSICLES AND ICICLES - Murmaids (Chattahoochie) Pat Hughes-WQXI, Atlanta has been; getting big requests for this unusual item. His heavy play has forced WAKE and WPLO on it. Stores report heavy traffic for it. Now Red Evans-WORD, Spartanburg, SC flashes a note of good requests. Don't judge it on the sound...just the results. Plug your ears and go with a comer. November 11, 19 63 _!*_ Number Twenty Nine REVIEW AND COMMENT (Cont’d.) MIDNIGHT MARY - Joey Powers (Amy) Requests at WPGC, Washington, DC and WQXI, Atlanta. The Jerry Cole (Capitol) version is the #2 seller in Savannah. TODAY’S TEARDROPS - Rick Nelson (imperial) Worth exposure. He’s due for a new one on Decca, which could knock this out of the saddle, if it does get off the ground. PEN AND PAPER - Jerry Lee Lewis (Smash)A lot of us have never forgiven him for his mistakes in the past. A good portion of the public did that years ago. That’s why his records usually sell, but never wind up on a chart. This one is selling and better than any thing on the bottom half of most station charts. The decision is yours. DARTING - Lyrics (Goldwax) Rough blues effort that is picked at WNOE, New Orleans and by Burke Johnson-WACK, Atlanta. Pop play will come after the R & B outlets create this one. It has the ingredients. For too many years to count almost all radio stations have waited until the day after Thanksgiving Day to begin the insertion of Christmas records within their format. I don’t know who the "genius" was that started this meaningless trend in broadcasting. Most major advertisers realize that this year they are up against the shortest holiday buying season in history. Thanksgiving falls on the 28th. Most retailers are planning to pitch Christmas this week and Sears and a few others are hitting the holiday theme already. How many stations are turning this business down and refusing to run the spots until the day after Thanksgiving? I do not recommend the "Silent Night" type music. In fact, I do not believe religious or serious holiday music has a place in a modem music format, until Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. But, there is a great wealth of new material available this season, cut by several top groups and artists, that is of a lighter vein and should be programmed now, as you build the holiday mood with your audience with records and com mercials, not to mention promotions. ALBUM PROGRAMMING A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOU - Ronettes, Crystals, Bobb E Soxx and Darlene Love (Phillies) Exception album. You'll be smart to play the brighter cuts now. Don’t worry about the critics who'll phone and complain about what the artists have done to their beautiful ...the masses will like this fresh sound. BEST: "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Christmas Baby Please Come Home." GOOD: "The Bells of St. Marys" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." THE SOUND OF THE WONDERFUL TIMES (Parkway) Good sound for both teen and adult listeners. Probably appeal to both sets of record buyers. The standards come off much better than the originals, except perhaps "Words Written On Water", which will not be their next single. BEST: "Moonlight Cocktail". GOOD: "And That Reminds Me." MURRAY THE K LIVE FROM THE BROOKLYN FOX (KFM) WINS dee jay Murray Kaufman’s recent show with the top talent on record, performing live with their most recent hits. A great package for late evening exposure. BEST: "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes. GOOD: "There Goes My Baby" by the Drifters. SONGS I WISH I ’D WRITTEN - Paul Anka (RCA) Several stations are already on this. He's been cold with the singles, but has found better success on this label with the long play. BEST: "All I Have To Do Is Dream". GOOD: "Oh Lonesome Me." His new single ships this week. DOWN MEMORY LANE - Dee Dee Sharp (Cameo) This girl built into a top drawing star. Probably the best talent in the Cameo-Parkway combine next to Bobby Rydell, BEST: "To Be Loved." GOOD: "Nobody But You." CLOUDY WITH OCCASIONAL TEARS - Skeeter Davis (RCA) Out last week, just when the popularity of her single began to decline. Let's hope they hold off, so this great album will get a lot of exposure. She's loved in a.11 comers of the Southland. BEST: "Moonlight Promises". GOOD: "I Will Follow Him", "Don't Let It Happen To Us," and "They Listened."
