Welcome to the autumn edition of Tales From The Woods magazine, a busy time for us all at this moment in time. At the end of this very month of October we shall be at London’s legendary 100 Club, and we all here at TFTW are in a state of excited anticipation in readiness for our return to this, the oldest music venue in London and possibly the UK, that has seen countless venues come and go, some lost to the passage of time since it first opened its doors in the heart of London’s west end amidst the carnage and destruction of World War II an incredible 75 years ago. The legend that is our wonderful headliner, Tommy Hunt, former member of doo- wop royalty in his native USA with The Flamingos, later to have huge hits and following as a bona fide soul man, a particular hero on the British northern soul circuit, is so looking forward to performing for us, on a show dedicated to that golden age of doo-wop back in the late fifties and early sixties.

Windy City Harmony: the Calvaes, Blenders and Accents

South Side Harmony in the Windy City: The Calvaes, Blenders & Accents Stories by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner and Val Shively Group Harmony on Chicago’s South Side The exact boundaries of Chicago’s South Side have changed over the years and vary slightly according to who you ask. In general, when someone talks about the South Side they’re referring to the area of the city south of the Loop. During the first half of the Twentieth Century, hun- dreds of thousands of African-Americans migrated from the Deep South to Chicago, making the South Side their home. The South Side has been home to Blues, Gospel and plenty of great Jazz. It’s been home to dozens of vocal groups, too, from the Soul Stirrers to the Chi-Lites. Of all the areas that have produced vocal groups, the Chicago’s South Side rates among the highest. A list of 1950’s groups from this fertile area would include the El Dorados, Five Chances, Five Ech- oes, Flamingos, Five Thrills, Orchids, Dukays, Sheppards, Pastels, Fortunes, Maples, Danderliers, Moroccos, Magnifi- cents, Rip Chords, Calvaes, Four Gents, Quintones, Debo- nairs, Nobles, Belvederes and countless others. “Solly McElroy and the Moroccos, the Danderliers… They were all right here on the South Side,” recalled Chicago vocalist Zeke Brown. “I knew the El Dorados. And the Five Chances. I grew up with these guys. We all used to meet and we’d be at shows. And Tommy Hunt of the Echoes. Tommy Hunt is the one who showed us how to do routines.

  • Vee-Jay Singles

    Vee-Jay Singles

Vee-Jay Records: the First Fifty Singles The story of Vee-Jay Records very likely begins with people who are not usually associated with the company. In the late 1940’s, Charles and Evelyn Aron founded Aristocrat Records in Chicago. They split from one another in 1948, and Evelyn wound up running Aristocrat – together with her partner, Leonard Chess. Late in 1949, Evelyn left Aristocrat with Art Sheridan to found the American (Record) Distributing Company. This left Leonard Chess with his brother Phil, and they famously renamed Aristocrat – the new label was Chess Records. Aron married Sheridan shortly before the end of the year, and by September of 1950 they had gone back into the record business. They had signed pop singer Arnold Jones and sax player John Porter and began recording them immediately. By the end of the year, Chance had recorded several artists in preparation for a company rollout. The March 10, 1951, issue of Billboard announced the upcoming release of several singles – including Porter’s Chance 1101. Given the moniker “Schoolboy,” John Porter did a fine job and was promoted well. That attention led to the discovery that Art Sheridan had used non-union musicians to record the aforementioned single. Sheridan claimed that they had union cards but apparently had not paid their dues. This got Sheridan in trouble with the American Federation of Musicians, who threw the book at him – preventing him from recording any union musicians until May, 1952. From then on, the union had Art Sheridan on their bad list. While Sheridan’s marriage to Aron did not last long (he remarried in May, 1954), he focused on rebranding Chance Records and building it into a strong Chicago label, along with his financial manager, Ewart Abner.
