Data note 2 – Completion of the online Census 2011 survey linked to age

™ The 2011 Census was the first census in and Wales to allow respondents to complete online instead of on a paper form. Overall, over 16% of census returns were completed online in England and Wales. had the highest online rate in (20.9%) and West Oxfordshire the lowest (16.3%). ™ The proportion of Census 2011 survey forms completed online is linked to the age profile of residents. o Analysis by ONS “clearly shows that the age of respondent has an impact on the mode of responding, with nearly 30% of respondents aged 26-35 choosing to complete online… compared with less than 10% for those aged over 65.”1 o Burford in West Oxfordshire is the Oxfordshire ward with the lowest % of Census 2011 returns via the internet and is also the ward with the highest % of residents aged 65+ (see chart below). ™ There is also a link to deprivation with some deprived wards such as Ruscote and Blackbird Leys (which have a lower % of older people) also scoring low on the % filling in the Census 2011 survey online. ™ Other wards where low online returns do not appear to be linked to age are Brize Norton & Shilton and Alvescot & Filkins – perhaps due to a higher % of military families.
