A jelen kötet egy német-magyar előadássorozat tanulmányaira alapozva a Kárpát-medence mintegy Jahre Geschichte: 7000 év történetét felvillantó friss kutatási eredményeket és innovatív Einblicke in die módszereket tárgyal és foglal össze. A képekkel gazdagon illusztrált kötet öt fejezetet mutat be Archäologie Ungarns Magyarország régészetéből: a neolitikumtól a bronz- és vaskoron át a római császárkorig, valamint a népvándorláskorig. A könyv, amely a szakmabeliekhez és a laikusokhoz egyaránt szól, sokoldalú betekintést 7000 nyújt a múlt életformáiba, illetve a 21. század eleji régészeti kutatások forrásaiba, problematikájába és módszereibe. This paper reviews new paleoenvironmental, archaeological, and genetic evidence from the Arabian Peninsula and southern Iran to explore the possibility of a demographic refugium dubbed the “Gulf Oasis,” which is posited to have been a vitally significant zone for populations residing in southwest Asia during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene.

MOBILITY, EXCHANGE, AND TOMB MEMBERSHIP IN BRONZE AGE ARABIA: A BIOGEOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lesley Ann Gregoricka, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Anthropology The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Clark Spencer Larsen, Advisor Joy McCorriston Samuel D. Stout Paul W. Sciulli Copyright by Lesley Ann Gregoricka 2011 ABSTRACT Major transitions in subsistence, settlement organization, and funerary architecture accompanied the rise and fall of extensive trade complexes between southeastern Arabia and major centers in Mesopotamia, Dilmun, Elam, Central Asia, and the Indus Valley throughout the third and second millennia BC. I address the nature of these transformations, particularly the movements of people accompanying traded goods across this landscape, by analyzing human and faunal skeletal material using stable strontium, oxygen, and carbon isotopes. Stable isotope analysis is a biogeochemical technique utilized to assess patterns of residential mobility and paleodiet in archaeological populations. Individuals interred in monumental communal tombs from the Umm an-Nar (2500-2000 BC) and subsequent Wadi Suq (2000-1300 BC) periods from across the Oman Peninsula were selected, and the enamel of their respective tomb members analyzed to detect (a) how the involvement of this region in burgeoning pan- Gulf exchange networks may have influenced mobility, and (b) how its inhabitants reacted during the succeeding economic collapse of the early second millennium BC. Due to the commingled and fragmentary nature of these remains, the majority of enamel samples came from a single tooth type for each tomb (e.g., LM1) to prevent ii repetitive analysis of the same individual.

Marshland of Cities: Deltaic Landscapes and the Evolution of Civilization by Jennifer R. Pournelle 2013 Copyright Jennifer R. Pournelle, 2013 All rights reserved. ABSTRACT OF THE BOOK Marshland of Cities: Deltaic Landscapes and the Evolution of Civilization by Jennifer R. Pournelle Prevailing theories of the evolution of early complex societies in southern Mesopotamia presume a uniform, arid landscape transited by Tigris and Euphrates distributaries. These theories hold that it was the seventh millennium BCE introduction of irrigation technologies from the northern alluvium to the south that began the punctuated evolution of Mesopotamian irrigation schemes. In this view, irrigation- dependent agro-pastoral production was the primary stimulus to urbanization and, millennia later, the emergence of city-states. In this book, I cast serious doubt on the landscape characterization underlying this model. I argue that much of the archaic alluvial landscape of southern Iraq consisted in large part, not of desert or steppe, but of wetlands, and that this finding requires a comprehensive reassessment of southern Mesopotamian resource management strategies and their role in emergent complex polities. Chapter One examines a Western Enlightenment tradition hostile to uncultivated wetlands. In Chapter Two, I discuss the role of imagery in archaeological research design, distinguish physical terrain from ideological landscape as objects of investigation, and address tendencies to conflate visibility of archaeological data with visualizations of the past. In Chapter Three, using satellite imagery to integrate geomorphologic and paleoclimatic evidence, I examine the Tigris-Euphrates delta, identify courses of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, locate the Persian Gulf head, and reconstruct terrain surfaces as they may have appeared five—six thousand years ago.

It discusses old and new excavations and surveys as well. According to the importance of the material from these periods found at newly-ex- cavated sites such as Kul Tepe Jolfa, Dava Göz Khoy, Lavin Tepe, and Qosha Tepe, we briefly describe the main stratigraphic and material data from these sites. Old and new data from excavations and surveys eventually lead us to a new chronological table for the 5th millennium BC in north/western (NW) Iran. The implications of the finds are discussed along with their limitations and future re- search directions. Petrographic Analysis of the 6th Millennium B.C. Dalma Ceramics from Northwestern and Central Zagros Yukiko Tonoike* Department of Anthropology, Yale University, USA (Received: 05/ 05/ 2012 ; Received in Revised form: 10/ 07/ 2012; Accepted: 22/ 09/ 2012) Sixth millennium BC Dalma ceramics from the northwestern and central Zagros have previously been described as being impossible to distinguish using decorative style analysis in spite of the great distance between the two regions. In this study, petrographic (thin section) analysis and a small-scale electron microprobe project was carried out on the ceramics of the two regions, as well as a small sample of the preceding and following Hajji Firuz and Pisdeli period ceramics. The petrographic analysis of microstructure reveals minute differences in manufacturing techniques. The results suggest that the Dalma ceramics were a distinct ceramic group with a great degree of variability, suggesting that they were made locally at the household level by individual potters and their preferences for ceramic manufacturing techniques. However, there was enough communication between the different regions to keep the stylistic and to a certain degree ceramic manufacturing technique uniform over this wide area. The analyses suggest that Dalma ceramics were spread by small groups of nomadic pastoralists who maintained a relationship with the agricultural Dalma villages. In this way, petrographic analysis of ceramics and geospatial analysis allow for a better understanding of the distribution of Dalma ceramics, and suggest the role of nomadic populations in their spread.
