Designer Julia Watson (Australia) and historian Rutger Bregman (Netherlands) venture 8 June 2021 a look into the year 2099. And the way that different generations look at sexuality and gender will be discussed by author JJ Bola (Mask Off: Masculinity Redefined), Sima Taparia from the Netflix show Indian Matchmaking and Ruth Westheimer (Ask Dr. Ruth). As the central concept of the movement, autonomy was interpreted and applied in women’s groups and projects through a variety of organizational principles. The thesis takes case studies of different feminist projects. Successive chapters examine the Berlin Women’s Centre; Verena Stefan’s novel Shedding, the women’s press Frauenoffensive, and the women’s bookstore Labrys; and the periodicals Frauenzeitung, Courage, and Emma. These studies show that autonomously organized projects were characterized by the expression of an anti- hierarchical ethos. The Berlin Women’s Centre organized itself around collective decision making and self sustainability. Women’s writing and publishing projects established an alternative literary space. -

PerSPekTiven von filmemacHerinnen Senator Cosmopolite Rainer Rother Das Filmschaffen von Regisseurinnen in der Zeit von 1968 bis 1999 ist Thema der Retro- spektive der 69. Internationalen Filmfestspiele Berlin. Die von der Deutschen Kinema- thek kuratierte Auswahl umfasst 28 Spiel- und Dokumentarfilme aus der DDR sowie aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland vor und nach 1990. Zudem werden rund 20 kurze und mittellange Filme als Vorfilme oder im Rahmen von zwei Kurzfilmprogrammen gezeigt. Gemeinsam ist den Filmemacherinnen und ihren Protagonist/innen das Interesse an der Erkundung eigener Lebensräume und die Suche nach einer eigenen filmischen Sprache. Die ausgewählten Filme reflektieren, jeweils geprägt von den sich wandelnden Lebens- und Produktionsbedingungen, den Umgang mit Körper, Raum und gesellschaftlichen Beziehungen sowie mit Alltag und Arbeit. In vielen Fällen bildet die persönliche Ge- schichte der Filmemacherinnen den erzählerischen Ausgangspunkt. Neben den über- wiegend unabhängigen Produktionen haben Filmemacherinnen in diesen Jahrzehnten aber auch Genrefilme realisiert, mit denen sie den Mainstream bedienten. 34 Regisseu- rinnen werden ihre ausgewählten Filme dem Publikum während der Berlinale präsen- tieren – noch nie gab es eine Berlinale Retrospektive mit so vielen Gästen. ARTICLES Quinn Slobodian GUERRILLA MOTHERS AND DISTANT DOUBLES West German Feminists Look at China and Vietnam, 1968–1982 In July 1969, five hundred West Berlin female kindergarten teachers voted to strike.1 Several women picketing carried a sign apparently unconnected to the labor action. Under the word ›Vietnam‹, the poster showed a woman with an infant and book in one hand and an assault rifle in the other. A caption in English read: ›We will fight and fight from this generation to the next…‹.2 What linked the German kindergarten teacher to the guerrilla mother in a distant war? Was this a superficial gesture of equivalence or did it hint at West German feminists’ deeper engagement with the communist East Asian world? Most existing histories suggest that West German feminists looked only one way in the decade after 1968: to the West, and to likeminded activists in France, Great Britain and the United States with comparable experiences and forms of mobilization.3 1 Ilse Lenz (ed.), Die neue Frauenbewegung in Deutschland. The version of record Clare Bielby; West Germany’s neue Frauenbewegung and the Productive Potential of Feminist (Gegen)gewalt, Forum for Modern Language Studies, Volume 53, Issue 4, 1 October 2017, Pages 379–404 is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1093/fmls/cqx037 WEST GERMANY’S NEUE FRAUENBEWEGUNG AND THE PRODUCTIVE POTENTIAL OF FEMINIST (GEGEN)GEWALT CLARE BIELBY ABSTRACT This article explores the feminist potential of (Gegen)gewalt ((counter-)violence) during the founding years of West Germany’s neue Frauenbewegung: firstly, as a discourse and practice which helped create the discursive space to start imagining feminist identity in the late 1960s, when, it has been argued, no such identity existed; secondly, as a militant practice in the early 1970s, through which women were able to change their gendered behavioural scripts in positive feminist ways; finally, as feminist self-defence, understood as enabling women to continue to imagine an active subject position in the mid-1970s, when women as the victims of patriarchal violence had become the predominant idea of the movement. Reading feminist flyers, publications and other documents of the period, as well as more recently published accounts of the movement, alongside the wider discourse on (Gegen)gewalt of the 1960s and 1970s, I trace a cultural history of feminist (Gegen)gewalt. Drawing upon an idealist philosophical tradition and basedupon apparently objective qualitative judgements which assess film in terms of its intellectual and artistic merits, this higb/low cultural paradigm has bad substantial impact on the study of popular German cinema within German film studies. Historically, when treated at all, such popular cinematic texts have tended to fall victim to the 'pessimistic prognostics of the Frankfurt School' (Bergfelder 1987,7). More recently, however, there have been attemptsto redressthis imbalanceand include popular cinematic genresin the critical appraisalof Germancinema.
