From The Dark Of Herbert West, who was my friend in college and in after life, I can speak only with extreme terror. This terror is not due altogether to the sinister manner of his recent disappearance, but was engendered by the whole nature of his life-work, and first gained its acute form more than seventeen years ago, when we were in the third year of our course at the Miskatonic University Medical School in Arkham. While he was with me, the wonder and diabolism of his experiments fascinated me utterly, and I was his closest companion. Now that he is gone and the spell is broken, the actual fear is greater. Memories and possibilities are ever more hideous than realities. The first horrible incident of our acquaintance was the greatest shock I ever experienced, and it is only with reluctance that I repeat it. As I have said, it happened when we were in the medical school where West had already made himself notorious through his wild theories on the nature of death and the possibility of overcoming it artificially. His views, which were widely ridiculed by the faculty and by his fellow-students, hinged on the essentially mechanistic nature of life; and concerned means for operating the organic machinery of mankind by calculated chemical action after the failure of natural processes. In his experiments with various animating solutions, he had killed and treated immense numbers of rabbits, guinea-pigs, cats, dogs, and monkeys, till he had become the prime nuisance of the college.

    English literature Level: G3 Supervisor: Anne Päivärinta Course: 2EN20E Examiner: Anna Greek Credits: 15 hp Date: 2017-02-28 A Narratological Comparison of the Morals of Herbert West and Victor Frankenstein Traces of Prometheus through Shelley towards Lovecraft Daniel Sundberg Sundberg i Abstract This essay explores the influence of contemporary values in two iterations of the Greek Prometheus myth and argues that the events portrayed in the two texts follow the structure of the myth, and that the discourse in the texts shows traces of contemporary moral values. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) is used as a starting point, but the focus is on Howard Phillip Lovecraft’s “Herbert West: Reanimator” (1922) as a later iteration of the Prometheus myth. The method for comparison is centered on disassembling the texts in accordance with the instructions found in Mieke Bal’s Narratology: Introduction to the Theory of Narrative (1997) to form tables of events. The functions of the events found in the Prometheus myth will then be used to sort the events from Lovecraft’s and Shelley’s work to assert focal points for comparing the moral values in the discourse. While set squarely in the height of the Great War, the player is quickly indoctrinated into a narrative that there are otherworldly forces at play, and that British and German soldiers along the Western Front are merely pawns in a greater battle for the souls of mankind. The title of the game invokes two great literary works of the early twentieth century: H.P. Lovecraft’s “Call of Cthulhu,” and T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land.” These references are integral to the overall game design, and add tremendous metaphorical depth to this narrative of war. Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a turn-based role-playing game, in which the player controls up to six different characters fighting for the British Forces. It is up to the player to best harness the combination of characters, weapons, and magic, to thwart the enemy forces of an army of undead German soldiers, reanimated by the evil Dr. Kaul. Ultimately, the player must ensure that his main characters not only obtain their tactical objectives at each level, but also retain their sanity to thwart the forces of evil and win the game.

  • Escritor Americano Do Fantástico, Com Alguma Influência Em Ficção
    Howard Phillips Lovecraft (20/08/1890 - 15/03/1937) Um Resumo Biográfico Escritor americano do Fantástico, com alguma influência em Ficção Científica, seus trabalhos foram publicados inicialmente em Weird Tales, enquanto seus ensaios e versos apareceram em publicações amadoras (zines), tendo êle mesmo sido um dos fundadores e incentivadores do gênero. Realmente, foi nos primórdios da década de 1930 que se iniciou o fandom organizado de FC. Os primeiros clubes e suas publicações foram efêmeras e tão logo um encerrava suas atividades outro surgia. Lovecraft teve um papel central neste movimento, pois muitos editores de fanzines pertenciam a seu círculo de relações. Tinha também como companheiros jornalistas amadores, ou que eram como tais por êle recrutados, tornando-se pioneiros em publicações de fãs de FC (fanzines), dentre os quais se destacaram: “Dragon-Fly” e “Leaves”, de Barlow; “The Fantasy Fan”, de Charles D. Hornig; “The Phantagraph”, de Donald A. Wollheim. Em 1934, William L. Crawford lançou uma publicação de nome “Unusual Stories”, que se tornou “Marvel Tales”, na esperança de persuadir escritores profissionais a contribuir gratuitamente com o objetivo de criar-se um movimento suficientemente forte de fãs que possibilitasse converter publicações amadoras em profissionais, auto-sustentáveis. O esquema nunca funcionou, então ou posteriormente. Crawford também tentou publicar, em 1936, “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”, de Lovecraft, como livro, conseguindo imprimir 400 cópias, 200 das quais encadernadas, só chegando a vender 150 antes de seu colapso financeiro. Atualmente são considerados padrão de coleções: • “The Dunwich Horror and Others”, de 1963, revista em 1984; • “At the Mountains of Madness and Other Novels”, de 1964, revista em 1985; • “Dagon and Other Macabre Tales”, de 1965, revista em 1986.
