Any comments on this list should be sent to the FAnGR Secretariat at [email protected]. The Committee’s view is that exotic breeds globally at risk should relate to overall global status of a breed, regardless of status in a particular country. It is proposed that “at risk” status be defined by FAO criteria.     Nationale Kampioenschappen van België in Bastogne Gehouden 21 en 22 januari 2017 Tekst en foto’s: Danny Camerlinck Tijdens het weekend van 21 en 22 januari werden in het Waalse Bastogne de Belgische kampioenschappen gehouden. Er waren twee Regionale clubs die de handen in mekaar geslagen hadden, om de taak van de organisatie op zich te nemen. De locatie was de overdekte veemarkt waar normaal rundvee verhandeld werd. Helaas was er tijdens de periode van het gebeuren een heuse winterprik met temperaturen tot zelfs -15°C. Dit in combinatie met een heuse sneeuwstorm tijdens de voorbereiding, en de open structuur van het gebouw, zorgde voor een lastige editie van deze show. Anderzijds was België het enige land waar nog geen vogelgriep vastgesteld werd. Kort na de show was het wel zover, maar gelukkig hadden we toen reeds de kampioenschappen achter de rug. Er waren totaal een 2700 dieren ingeschreven en alles was mooi verdeeld over de beide lands- gedeelten en ook voor de soorten waren er bij alle diergroepen mooie aantallen. De Belgische Landsbond verzorgde de administratie, en er was ook een zéér rijk gevulde prijzentafel zodat er voor iedere deelnemer iets te rapen viel. We hadden dus een mooie show die zeker de moeite was om te bezoeken. De gezellige sfeer bij de vele aanwezigen was hiervan het bewijs. Een overzicht van vele raskampioenen in de fotoreportage hierna.     THE FLEMISH CUCKOO Searching for their origin Text and photos: Norbert Schollaert (B) PART 3 CHICKEN BREEDS AND EXHIBITIONS From the middle of the 19th century, we see a shift towards greater consumption of imported products and again more meat. The advances in farming techniques by selecting and crossbreeding also followed out in the poultry world. But it was still the better middle class who could afford the keeping and breeding of purebred fowl. From this time, in America, Britain and the European mainland, distinguishable breeds of chicken got a breed name. The upper middle classes was developing an interest in keeping chickens for their ornamental value. The exhibitions of farmyard animals became popular. During the Belle Epoque, in 1900, the consumption of eggs doubled and the famous ‘poulets de Bruxelles’ were in great demand on the rich urban tables. The triangle Aalst - Mechelen - Brussels acquired fame with his fatteners which produced up to 1000 chickens per year. It was the heyday of the Belgian breeds, which locations we can see on a map from 1903 “Habitats des races Belges” (courtesy of the Image store of the CAG). In the north, the Campine; in the east the Braekel and Courtrai à cinq droits (The Courtrai or Kortrijk Fowl was a short-legged Braekel with 5 toes, that according to Edward Brown was a descendant of the Dorkings); in the south the Race Ardennaise and the Race Herve (the Ardenner and the Herve fowl) and in the centre a large region with Minorca (a Spanish variety with black plumes, which was seen in 1783 for the first time in England and in 1880 already was bred in Germany), the Race Coucou (The Cuckoo coloured chickens) and Brabançonnes.

The answer will surprise you perhaps just as much as me: "Because they are so friendly and calm by nature" ... Who's Adrie Brouwers Adrie Brouwers lives in Roosendaal and is an enthusiastic chicken breeder; of Gamefowls, to be more precise. And, like his fowls, he is just as friendly and calm, and also said to be tenacious. As a result of his tenacity, he managed to get a one-day Show of Gamefowls in the Netherlands, the Optimum Avium International, which will soon be organized for the third time in his home- town, Roosendaal. More about that later. First, we shall learn a little more of the man. Photo above: Adrie with one of his Shamo roosters. Right: A breeding pen of Malay and a head study of a Malay cock. As a teenager he bred cage birds and already had a passion for fowls. But at home there was no room to keep chickens. In 1978, he left the family home and together with his wife moved into a house with a garden in Eindhoven. Soon a number of coops were built, and he even built an incubator. Chicks were hatched and the coops became populated with many varieties of fowls. As a brand new member of the local breeders’ club he went to the National Exhibition in Hertogenbosch, where he saw the large Malays and they conquered his heart. Looking back, he thinks that at the first exhibition he visited, he was actually inspired by the versatility of the chicken fancy.

In starch gel electrophoresis many of these are heterogeneous and four have genetically con- trolled polymorphisms, which are described below. (The electrophoretic patterns of many of the variants are in Figure 1.) Ovalbumin (ou locus). Alleles ou A and ou B result in phenotypes A, B, and AB (LUSH1961, 1964b). In the present paper, however, the variants are named with reference to their relative mobilities as the letter A is used in A,, A, and A, terminology for the sub-fractions of ovalbumin ( LONGSWORTH,CANNAN and MAC- INNES1940; CANN1949). Thus ovalbumin A = slow (S) and ovalbumin B = fast (F). A recent preliminary communication suggests that the primary struc- ture of the fast and slow ovalbumins differs in a single peptide (WISEMANand FOTHERGILL1966). Other ovalbumin variants have been described. BAKERand MANWELL(1 962) found polymorphism which involves a more rapid migration of A, and A, and a lack of A, in one homozygote category (A3--) ; the heterozygote (A?+-) has less of the A, subfraction than the “normal” homozygote (A,++). CROIZIER(1966) has discovered yet another variant (ovalbumin Faverolles) which has subfrac- tions extra to those of the fast and slow variants. He also found it possible to clas- sify each of LUSH’S(1964b) ovalbumin phenotypes into two subtypes on the basis of quantitative differences in A,.

Translation: Willem van Ballekom Photos: Optimum Avium and Hristo Lukanov The Optimum Avium International show is THE show for gamefowl, longtail- and longcrower breeds. A few years ago I got the idea to organize this event. I knew that many breeders were looking for an event like this. Some people said the effort would be useless as less and less birds were entered in the regular poultry shows. My opinion was different and with the help of a number of enthusiastic and experienced people I accepted the challenge. Shamo. Photo: Hristo Lukanov. The first edition, Optimum Avium 2015 was organized in Roosendaal, this in a perfect location, a gymnasium school complex with two spacious sport halls. The results for this first show edition were overwhelming, more than 400 birds were entered for this show. Due to many requests and reactions by breeders and spectators we decided to organize a second edition. This second Optimum Avium International show held on the 16th of January 2016 exceeded all our expectations. More than 540 birds were entered. An unmatched number of breeds were shown, many of them never or very rarely seen on European shows. A total of 543 entered birds 411 gamefowl, 102 longtail and 30 longcrowers, large and bantam were entered. We as show committee expected more birds than in 2015 but this number was beyond our expectations. However we decided to not stack any of the exhibition cages. A second sports hall was available and added to the show.
