Danny Camerlinck Nationale Kampioenschappen van België in Bastogne Gehouden 21 en 22 januari 2017 Tekst en foto’s: Danny Camerlinck Tijdens het weekend van 21 en 22 januari werden in het Waalse Bastogne de Belgische kampioenschappen gehouden. Er waren twee Regionale clubs die de handen in mekaar geslagen hadden, om de taak van de organisatie op zich te nemen. De locatie was de overdekte veemarkt waar normaal rundvee verhandeld werd. Helaas was er tijdens de periode van het gebeuren een heuse winterprik met temperaturen tot zelfs -15°C. Dit in combinatie met een heuse sneeuwstorm tijdens de voorbereiding, en de open structuur van het gebouw, zorgde voor een lastige editie van deze show. Anderzijds was België het enige land waar nog geen vogelgriep vastgesteld werd. Kort na de show was het wel zover, maar gelukkig hadden we toen reeds de kampioenschappen achter de rug. Er waren totaal een 2700 dieren ingeschreven en alles was mooi verdeeld over de beide lands- gedeelten en ook voor de soorten waren er bij alle diergroepen mooie aantallen. De Belgische Landsbond verzorgde de administratie, en er was ook een zéér rijk gevulde prijzentafel zodat er voor iedere deelnemer iets te rapen viel. We hadden dus een mooie show die zeker de moeite was om te bezoeken. De gezellige sfeer bij de vele aanwezigen was hiervan het bewijs. Een overzicht van vele raskampioenen in de fotoreportage hierna. During the weekend of 21 and 22 January, the Belgian championships were held in Bastogne, Wallonia. There were two regional clubs who had took on the organization of this event. The location was the market hall where were normally cattle is traded. Unfortunately, during the period of the event there was a real winter prick with temperatures as low as -15 ° C. This, combined with a real snowstorm during the preparation, and the open structure of the building, made it a difficult edition of this show. On the other hand, Belgium was the only country where no avian flu was detected. (It was, shortly after, so we have been lucky we could hold this National Show!) There were a total of 2,700 animals and everything was nicely divided between the two parts of the country (Flanders and Wallonia) and there were also large numbers entered in all animal groups. The Belgian Landsbond took care of the administration, and there was also a very richly filled prize table with something for every participant. So we had a beautiful show which was definitely worth visiting and the many visitors created a convivial atmosphere. You will find an overview of the champions in the photo reportage hereafter. Exhibitors delivering exhibits may enter and exit via the Leader Street entrance. The Poultry & Pigeon Pavilion is situated on the first floor of the Stirling/Angas Hall, west of the Hamilton Boulevard and you will be required to bring your vehicle via the western ramp entry. The exhibits must be accompanied by computer printout entry details. No exhibits will be permitted inside the pavilion other than those which have been entered for competition.     THE FLEMISH CUCKOO Searching for their origin Text and photos: Norbert Schollaert (B) PART 3 CHICKEN BREEDS AND EXHIBITIONS From the middle of the 19th century, we see a shift towards greater consumption of imported products and again more meat. The advances in farming techniques by selecting and crossbreeding also followed out in the poultry world. But it was still the better middle class who could afford the keeping and breeding of purebred fowl. From this time, in America, Britain and the European mainland, distinguishable breeds of chicken got a breed name. The upper middle classes was developing an interest in keeping chickens for their ornamental value. The exhibitions of farmyard animals became popular. During the Belle Epoque, in 1900, the consumption of eggs doubled and the famous ‘poulets de Bruxelles’ were in great demand on the rich urban tables. The triangle Aalst - Mechelen - Brussels acquired fame with his fatteners which produced up to 1000 chickens per year. It was the heyday of the Belgian breeds, which locations we can see on a map from 1903 “Habitats des races Belges” (courtesy of the Image store of the CAG). In the north, the Campine; in the east the Braekel and Courtrai à cinq droits (The Courtrai or Kortrijk Fowl was a short-legged Braekel with 5 toes, that according to Edward Brown was a descendant of the Dorkings); in the south the Race Ardennaise and the Race Herve (the Ardenner and the Herve fowl) and in the centre a large region with Minorca (a Spanish variety with black plumes, which was seen in 1783 for the first time in England and in 1880 already was bred in Germany), the Race Coucou (The Cuckoo coloured chickens) and Brabançonnes.

    JAARLIJKSE VECHTHOENDERSHOW ANNUAL GAMEFOWL SHOW 18 FEBRUARI 2018 IN LINTER, BELGIUM Text & Photos: Danny Camerlinck Jaarlijkse show van de Belgische Vechthoenderclub op 18 februari 2018. Zoals elk jaar werd deze show opnieuw gehouden in de Evenementenhal Deroye te Linter-Orsmaal, een mooie locatie. Vorig jaar werd er naar een latere datum verschoven ivm vogelgriep, maar nu kon alles zoals gepland doorgaan. Wel altijd bang afwachten, want ook bij de noorderburen was afgelopen tentoonstellingsseizoen grotendeels in het water gevallen door deze ziekte. Daardoor konden ook nu geen Nederlandse dieren deelnemen. Het deelnemersveld was ondanks dat toch interessant en 35 fokkers uit verschillende landen brachten hun beste dieren mee. Bij deze eendagskeuring gebeurt de keuring in aanwezigheid van het publiek. Dit zorgt voor een aparte sfeer waar de deelnemers de keurmeesters eens aan het werk kunnen zien. De rassen konden opgesplitst worden in Belgische rassen waarvan 66 groot en 26 kriel en ook de buitenlandse rassen waren zowel in groot en kriel goed vertegenwoordigd. Totaal waren er 266 dieren aanwezig, waaronder een paar van de zeldzamere rassen die op weinig andere tentoonstellingen te zien zijn. Opvallende verschijningen zoals Malgache Naakthals (ook bekend als Madagascar Naakthals. Red.) en ook Thaise vechters kom je niet elke dag tegen. Ook een paar Noord-Franse krijgers die duidelijk vechtlust uitstraalden waren aanwezig Dit alleen al maakt het de moeite om een bezoek te brengen. Het was dan ook de ganse dag een gezellige druk. Eens de keuring afgelopen was werden de kampioenen en reekswinnaars bekend gemaakt. Menig foto werd gemaakt en de toppers mochten in de fotokooi waar ze zich mits enige moeite van hun beste kant lieten zien.

    THE FLEMISH CUCKOO Searching for their origin Text and photos: Norbert Schollaert (B) Part 5 (end) – Living Heritage The Chasse et Pêche on 03/24/1925 magazine published, in its 03/24/1925 issue, a letter written by Mr. A. Detroy, addressed to the editor, Mr. Pulinckx. In addition to his advocacy for local breeds, he also mentioned that, at a meeting around that period, he and E. Labbé had decided to improve the local cuckoo coloured chicken of their region and name it the VLAANDERSE KOEKOEK (Flemish Cuckoo). So this is where the name emerged for the first time. No wonder that in old books we never encountered that name, but only names as “the old Scotch Grey” or “the old type Malines”. Detroy further notes that Mr. Ramé in Rennes had the same goals for the common cuckoo chicken there. Unfortunately, he adds, the farmers were aiming for a variety that is as large as possible, as quickly as possible. It so happened that the Poule de Rennes, as soon as they were introduced in the public market, was immediately mated to the Plymouth Rock, in order to obtain a heavier chicken. Detroy experienced that on his own expense, when he bought a few chickens from Rennes to introduce some new blood in his Flemish Cuckoos. These were obviously no birds bred by Ramé, who had carefully kept his line pure, but chickens that roamed free on the farms. When these chicks grew up he immediately saw the impact of the Plymouth Rock. The pullets were plump, with yellow legs and poor tail feathers, in other words, poorly-looking Plymouths.

    Museum of English Rural Life David Scrivener Collection D DS David Scrivener (1952 – 2015) was a committed and enthusiastic poultry- keeper. He earned a National Diploma in Poultry from Harper Adams Agricultural College in Shropshire. He utilised his expertise as a judge at various shows for the Poultry Club of Great Britain. David had a passion for rare breeds, particularly the Spanish, which he kept, and fulfilled various roles for the Rare Poultry Society, variously acting as Chairman, Honorary Historian and Patron. He was the author of several books on the subject including Starting with Bantams (2002), Exhibition Poultry Keeping (2005), Rare Poultry Breeds (2006) and Popular Poultry Breeds (2009). The Collection covers the year’s 1893 to 2007; undated. The physical extent of the collection is 17 boxes, 13 oversize items. D DS 1 Slides c. 1980 to 2015 Contains slides of various poultry species arranged by species and breed. Much of the information used here was obtained from Scrivener’s own annotations for each slide. Many of these photographs are studio portraits, used to illustrate Scrivener’s publications. A large proportion of the photographs were taken by John Tarren.
