Lastly, I would like to thank all of the Afro-Panamanian writers for providing me with the literature to make this project happen. vi Abstract The diaspora experience is characterized by hybridity, diversity and above all, difference. The nature of the diaspora experience therefore precludes an exclusive articulation of identity. Black identity in Panama is one characterized by this same multiplicity. My dissertation examines race, culture, and ethnicity in the development of Panamanian national identity and is informed by the critical theories of Paul Gilroy, Stuart Hall, and Frantz Fanon. The articulation of Afro-Panamanian identity is both intriguing and complex because there are two groups of blacks on the Isthmus: Spanish- speaking blacks who arrived as a result of slavery (15th -18th centuries) and English- speaking blacks who migrated from the West Indies to construct the Trans-isthmian Railroad (1850-1855) and Panama Canal (1904-1914). The country’s cultural and linguistic heterogeneity not only enriches the study of Panama and illustrates that it is a nation characterized by multiplicity, but it also captures the complexity of the African Diaspora in the Americas. This plurality is evidenced in Afro-Panamanian literary discourse from its inception in the late nineteenth century to the present. This study analyzes the representation of Afro-Hispanics and Afro-Antilleans during different time periods in Panamanian literature, the literature written by Afro- Hispanics, and the literature written by Afro-Antilleans which emerged during the latter half of the twentieth century. Finally, I address how the discourse of both groups of blacks converge and diverge. vii Panamanian literature has been grossly understudied. While its history, geography, and political ties to the United States have been examined extensively by intellectuals from the United States and Latin America, with the exception of a few studies, its literature has been virtually ignored by the Hispanic literary canon. Within the field of Afro-Hispanic literature, black Panamanian literature has also been understudied. With the exception of works published about Gaspar Octavio Hernández, Carlos Guillermo Wilson, and Gerardo Maloney, Afro-Panamanian literature has not been examined comprehensively. Gilroy's metaphor describes the multiplicity of the black diaspora and the difficulty in articulating a single collective identity. The nature of the diaspora experience precludes an exclusive articulation of identity. As the black British cultural critic Stuart Hall notes, the diaspora experience is one shaped

Sullivan Specialist in Latin American Affairs November 27, 2012 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL30981 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Panama: Political and Economic Conditions and U.S. Relations Summary With five successive elected civilian governments, the Central American nation of Panama has made notable political and economic progress since the 1989 U.S. military intervention that ousted the regime of General Manuel Antonio Noriega from power. Current President Ricardo Martinelli of the center-right Democratic Change (CD) party was elected in May 2009, defeating the ruling center-left Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) in a landslide. Martinelli was inaugurated to a five-year term on July 1, 2009. Martinelli’s Alliance for Change coalition with the Panameñista Party (PP) also captured a majority of seats in Panama’s National Assembly. Panama’s service-based economy has been booming in recent years – with a growth rate of 7.6% in 2010 and 10.6% in 2011 – largely because of the ongoing Panama Canal expansion project, now slated for completion in early 2015. The CD’s coalition with the PP fell apart at the end of August 2011when President Martinelli sacked PP leader Juan Carlos Varela as Foreign Minister. Varela, however, retains his position as Vice President. Tensions between the CD and the PP had been growing throughout 2011, largely related to which party would head the coalition’s ticket for the 2014 presidential election. Despite the breakup of the coalition, the strength of the CD has grown significantly since 2009 because of defections from the PP and the PRD and it now has a majority on its own in the legislature.

    Religion in Panama Country Summary Although the Republic of Panama, which is about the size of South Carolina, is now considered part of the Central American region, until 1903 the territory was a province of Colombia. The Republic of Panama forms the narrowest part of the isthmus and is located between Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east. The Caribbean Sea borders the northern coast of Panama, and the Pacific Ocean borders the southern coast. Panama City is the nation’s capital, which contains about 40 percent of the nation’s population. The country has an area of 30,193 square miles (75,417 square km) and a population of 3.3 million (2008). Racially, the majority of the population is considered mestizo (70 percent, mixed Amerindian and Hispanic), while the rest are West Indian (14 percent, Afro-Caribbean), Amer- indian (8 percent), Caucasian (6 percent) and Asian/other (2 percent). The Amerindian popu- lation (285,230 in 2000) includes eight ethnolinguistic groups: the Guaymí (Ngöbe-Buglé), Kuna, Choco (Emberá-Wounaan), Teribe (Naso), Bokota and Bribri. In 2000, about 80 percent of the population were Spanish-speaking, about 9 percent were speakers of Asian or Middle Eastern languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindustani, Hebrew and Arabic), 8.3 percent were Amerindian (speakers of eight languages), and 3.7 percent were English-speaking (mainly West Indian and North American). However, many Panamanians are bilingual, especially in Spanish and English (Standard English and Western Caribbean Creole English). There is also a small population of “Negros Congos” who speak an Afro-Hispanic Creole, especially on the Caribbean coast of Colón province.

    CAPÍTULO 1 MARCO REFERENCIAL “‘Gutierritos’ despertó el interés masivo y también la interrogante: ¿acaso las telenovelas sólo sirven para provocar el llanto del auditorio” Mauricio Peña. 1.1 Antecedentes de la Telenovela Molina y Carvajal (1999:2), en su artículo “Trayectoria de la telenovela Latinoamericana” nos señalan que el género telenovela tuvo sus antecedentes en 1790 en Francia e Inglaterra con las representaciones populares, tomadas de las formas y modos de los espectáculos de ferias, donde el tema a escenificar dependía de la literatura oral de la región, en los que destacan cuentos de miedo, misterio y relatos de terror. A mediados del siglo XIX, nació un nuevo medio de comunicación dirigido a las masas, el folletín, el cual, sirve de modelo para la realización de telenovelas. Villanueva, M., en su artículo “El melodrama, la telenovela en América y su nacimiento en México” (2000:1), apunta que: “este género literario de origen francés, se inició con la publicación en el diario Le siècle de la traducción —como pliego suelto— de El lazarillo de Tormes. Los principales exponentes de esta forma narrativa fueron, entre otros, Eugene Sue, Dumas (padre), Dickens y Balzac. Las historias rebosaban intriga, romance y suspenso, lo que atrapaba el interés de los lectores, que las seguían diariamente para conocer el final” Lataban (1995:8) en su Tesis Consumo de telenovelas por estudiantes de universidades privadas señala que dentro de sus fases, encontramos la función ideológica, la cual presentaba una novela donde “triunfaban el sentido común, los buenos pensamientos, el orden y la moral”, dejando atrás la constante vigilancia de la sociedad y convirtiéndose en una fantasía de ésta.

It examines how Panamanian politics and Panama’s relationship with the United States changed over the decades leading up to this new treaty. The Panama Railway and then the Panama Canal placed Panama in a unique position within the growing American Empire as the isthmus linked the United States to the resources it needed to fuel its domestic industry and to markets for its manufactured goods. Recurrent political unrest and economic challenges within Panama forced the Panamanian government to attempt to renegotiate its relationship with the United States. This work analyzes the changes within Panamanian society, United States foreign relations, and world affairs that led to the 1936 treaty succeeding where other treaty negotiations had not.
