In November , a previously unknown First Folio was found in a public library in Saint-Omer , Pas-de-Calais in France , where it had lain for years. I thought there were too many characters to follow, and after a while there were so many machinations to keep straight, so much politics to navigate, I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. The concepts in it are available only to qualify those classes, and their classmarks are not to be used on their own. (2) These classmarks may be added to any class where the instruction appears to add letters from Schedule 3; e.g. in Class J Education, JV is special categories of educands, and at JVG Language groups, Non-English (or favoured language) speaking appears the instruction: Add to JVG letters C/Z from Schedule 3; so Education of Bantus would be JVG HN. Or, in Schedule 2, BQ is Linguistic group areas, and BQH N would be Bantu-speaking areas. Sullivan ABSTRACT Gaelic and Welsh are closely related both linguistically and culturally, yet historical events have placed these languages on diverging paths: one toward death, the other toward revival. According to conventional models of sociolinguistic theory, Gaelic should be a thriving language and Welsh should be imperiled, but, based on recent census figures, the opposite is true. I compare Gaelic and Welsh to present a case that challenges current theoretical frameworks of language change. Through my study, I reveal the nature of social and political pressures on language systems as well as the influence of nationalist ideologies on language survival. The result of this study proves that a national identity that includes language can reverse language shift in endangered or minority languages. One implication for future research includes modification of the current models of language death to account for linguistic nationalism. Lauren A.     A classical example of a man getting credit for what must have been a woman's work Rediscovering Homer January 12, 2007 It is ungracious to review a book for what it is not. So let me be ungracious at the start. Homer, defined as the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey as they come down to most readers today in the fine translations by Robert Fagles, Stanley Lombardo and Richmond Lattimore, gives us nearly everything we need to know about human beings experiencing the effects and aftereffects of war. It is natural, therefore, to expect a general study of the epics - even one such as Andrew Dalby's Rediscovering Homer , which concentrates on how the epics came to be - to discuss their very raison d'être and why they have survived so long in the Western tradition. This is not the case here. Dalby makes no reference to old or new classic studies of the Iliad and the Odyssey as war literature - for example, Jonathan Shay's Achilles in Vietnam and Odysseus in America ; James Tatum's The Mourner's Song: War and Remembrance from the Iliad to Vietnam (reviewed in The Times Higher on June 13, 2003); and Simone Weil's The Iliad or the Poem of Force (critical edition by James P. Holoka 2003). Hans Van Wees's Status Warriors: War, Violence, and Society in Homer and History is the little used exception. The poems for Dalby are unified as "poetic biographies" of Achilles and Odysseus. They were subverted into their present form to offer criticisms of aristocratic privilege and, in the Odyssey , praise for actions of "people much lower on the scale of recognised power".

My first attempt at a similar exploration in Roman literature was encouraged by Richard Stoneman, publisher at Routledge, who saw that what I proposed could be a kind of géographie des mentalités (or perhaps des sensualités). The book appeared nineteen years ago as Empire of Pleasures. 2 Recently the emergence of an archaeology of the senses, 3 and the application of these archaeological insights to the Roman Empire, promise new perspectives on the exploration that I proposed.

Caserio Professor of English Head of the Department of English *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT The aims of “Language Diversity as Policy” are threefold: to deepen rhetoric and composition scholars’ understanding of what language policies are; how political and social agendas propel these policies in specific directions; and what purposes language policies can serve in scholars’ efforts to set the topics and terms for debate in public dialogue about the increasing linguistic diversity in the U.S. To fulfill that aim, I revisit and reread two language policies created by the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) in the past thirty years, the 1974 “Students’ Right to Their Own Language” resolution and the 1988 National Language Policy. Here I analyze how compositionists in the Brooklyn College-based Language Curriculum Research Group and the CCCC Language Policy Committee wove the principles at the heart of these language polices into our professional and civic practice. I then build on the results of these studies to illuminate the National Language Agenda, drafted by the U.S.
