HOLGER CZUKAY - MOVIES (CD) Holger Czukay's first post-Can solo album finds the bass player exploring prog rock jams with varied instrumentation, song-oriented lyrics, and media samples from film, television, and short-wave. It was the samples that put Czukay in the same category as David Byrne and Brian Eno: an art rocker exploring the early days concurrently with early hip-hop pioneers (or alternately, a white man exploiting the culture of the third world, depending on who you read). On "Persian Love," Czukay backs up clips of an Iranian singer recorded off the short-wave with lilting guitar and keyboard riffs that sparkle like light. The album is all pleasant, playful textures, with little of the darkness that Can dallied with. Ted Mills / All Music Guide

VANGELIS & NEURONIUM - IN LONDON (CD) Vangelis & Neuronium the platinum edition. 30th anniversary. During that unforgettable session in 1981, Vangelis and the members of Neuronium made some of the most lucid samples that could be made with in the world of cosmic electronic music. Although the original work was recorded by Vangelis on an analog system, at the legendary nemo studio in London, Huygen’s technical expertise has completely remastered the sounds with improved mixing. Listening to the album takes you back to the sound of Vangelis/Neuronium at the end of the 70’s start of the 80’s with the analog sound, sequencers and symphonic atmospheres dominating all other sounds. However this cd is not just for nostalgia enthusiasts and collectors: the true electronic music in its most cosmic aspect shines through in all its splendor. Recommended for: instrumental chill out music. Can be used for meditation, as background music for studying or for attentive and profound listening to experience different musical shades. The use of headphones is recommended. Press Information

Featuring exclusive music composed for this special event, these two discs contain more than 130 minutes of slowly - changing textures and abyssal drones that describe the hidden voices of Nature : the endless movements of the ocean waves, the rustle of the crescent moon, the sunset's undercurrents, the life of nocturnal animals, the silent flow of the stars. A magical connection with a world of forgotten sounds. Oöphoi plays synths, dulcimer, percussions : Italian artist Netherworld appears on one track as a special guest. Press Information

HOLGER CZUKAY VS WALKER - CLASH (2-CD) If there was one thing in my life I was afraid of then it was playing live again. After abandoning from Can during the concert on May, 20 - 1977 in Geneva when Reebop Kwakubah had pulled out my plug on stage I never wanted to go back on the road again. Meanwhile I was hiding in my studio where the world was the best of all worlds for me. Until I heard the first attempts of advanced Techno and extreme dance versions of jungle, trip hop and the various sides of music developed by younger generations. If I only could become a part in one of those teams I dreamt, as I really got fascinated by their music, especially by musicians from the powerful electronic underground. And then there was someone who seemed to sense what I was looking for and he invited me spontaneously to join him during an underground party in Cologne. It was Doc Walker from Air Liquide, the notoriously well known electronic adventurers from Cologne. This invitation turned out to be one of the most exciting surprises I could imagine, a spontaneous three hours set of sounding and smelling garbage. Since the old Can days I thought this wasn't possible any more. This lead to our second live performance in Cologne's Liquid Sky club and further on to my first live tour in twenty years. We both prepared our parts without letting the other know in order to get surprised by the other on stage - and how I got surprised by Doc Walker's reactions, it was like going on stage with the old Can again, with different equipment but with the same attitude. Holger Czukay

RUDY ADRIAN - PAR AVION (CD) The first five tracks of Par Avion, nearly 50 minutes, are the sequencer sketches, starting with the dreamy title track. A brief French soliloquy courtesy of Rudy’s good friend Barbara Stone adds a unique twist to his familiar sounds. Soft in pacing and mood, this makes a beautiful opener. Also mellow is “Bavarian Eagle,” with a fascinating sequence that sounds like a child’s toy or music box being hand-cranked to create the lilting sound. As Adrian does so well, this one slowly builds, picking up the pace and deftly layering in synth solos and various electronic sounds and effects. It is very much the classic Rudy Adrian sound, almost too familiar perhaps but enjoyable just the same. There are some nice segues as it moves from one section to the next over its 14 ½ minute course, in particular a mesmerizing section around the 10:00 mark. “Across the Canyons” is a collaboration with Alpha Wave Movement that flows quite evenly along. Though definitely sequencer based, this fourth volume of sequencer sketches is more relaxed throughout. “Soaring Birds” even features a lovely piano intro. Only “Sore Birds” really picks up the pace at the end. The last two tracks, nearly 30 minutes, are intended as a bonus album, quite different from the rest, a very ambient affair. “Starfields 2 Part 1” starts with dark metallic shimmering sounds. If one could imagine music to accompany free-floating in deep space, it would sound something like this. This is colder and harsher than Adrian’s mellower like MoonWater and The Healing Lake, pretty dark and dank stuff for him, but he pulls it off beautifully. Lie in the middle of a dark room with headphones on for this one. Two fantastic albeit different Rudy Adrian albums on one disc, what could be better? Phil Derby / Electroambient Space

TANGERINE DREAM - MADCAP'S FLAMING DUTY (CD) founded Tangerine Dream in autumn of 1967 in Berlin, and over the next few decades the band became a pioneer of instrumental and . Nominated for seven Grammy Awards, the band has done movie soundtracks and survived several member changes. 40 years

2-6-2007 pagina 16 van 24

and many albums later, Tangerine Dream is still making music. The new album Madcap’s Flaming Duty is true to Tangerine Dream’s form, full of hollow sounds and spacey atmosphere. It is dedicated to former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett, and the lyrics of each song are taken from the poems of British and American poets, ranging from William Blake to Ralph Waldo Emerson to Walt Whitman. Depending on your tolerance for such kitsch in your music, the idea is either insufferably pretentious or delightfully frivolous. Either way, the poetry fits perfectly with the layered landscape of the music. Chris Hausl, the vocalist, inflects the poems with despair, although at times he sounds like he’s doing an impression of Ian Curtis. However, for a band that has often been criticized for failing to integrate vocals effectively within the music, Madcap’s Flaming Duty is a coup. Hausl uses his voice in an understated way, and his reservation manages to mesh with the ambience of the album. Within an album of sounds, there are specific sounds that absolutely stand out. Linda Spa’s harmonica on “Astrophel and Stella” feels like something out of an old Sergio Leone film. The synthetic drums on “Solution of All Problems” shake and shine. The flute on “A Dream of Death” provides a degree of airiness that perfectly undercuts the thudding drums. Highlight tracks include “Hymn to Intellectual Beauty”, which has a subtle piano part that underlies urgent singing by Hausl and a soothing guitar part played by Bernhard Beibl. “Mad Song” has a catchy melody and its pace is fast enough that it almost feels like a pop song. “Blessed Damozel” is full of blips and beeps, and Hausl’s vocals are deep and robotic. For people who can't stand ambient music, this album will seem to break no borders, and thus is certainly not essential. And at 70 minutes long, it can all be a bit much. But for fans of the genre, Tangerine Dream’s sound is challenging, odd and complex. They are legends, and their new album does justice to the reputation they have built for themselves. Madcap’s Flaming Duty is not ground breaking like past Tangerine Dream works, but it is a wonderful journey into an odd little musical world. Edward Xia

TANGERINE DREAM - RUBICON (CD) Rubycon is a new-agey, instrumental album performed mostly with keyboards. I'm guessing that describes most Tangerine Dream, but I haven't heard enough to say. On this disc, track one begins with around seven minutes of slow waves of sound and what sounds like occasional chiming gongs in the background. Around the 8 minute mark, it starts to pick up speed, gets a repetitive background pattern going and lays various keyboard melodies over top. The backing pattern peters out around the 15 minute mark, leaving backwards-sounding piano chords floating around, which finally fade away after a couple minutes. Part two has an eerier sound to it overall, particularly the opening section of ambient drones that remind me a bit of the "screaming seagull" part of Pink Floyd's "Echoes". After a few minutes, this shifts into a section of what sounds like a ghostly chorus which reminds me of the ending of the movie 2001. Around the five minute mark the song picks up a repetitive backing pattern similar to that of part one, with various keyboard lines drifting in and out over top of it. Twelve minutes into the track the repetitive pattern fades into the sounds of ocean waves, and then the piece moves into floating chords that manage to sound both gentle and brooding at the same time. This continues to the track's eventual fadeout five minutes later. To be honest, the first time I heard this album I thought it was kind of boring. I still have to be in the right mood for it, but when I am it's a tasty little number. On a recent vacation, I took my walk man out on a beach and listened to Rubycon at night while watching waves

crash against huge rocks, and it was perfect for that occasion. Bob Eichler

HELDON - UN REVE SANS CONSEQUENCE SPECIALE (CD) While analog electronics still abound, this album shows a distinct shift in the Heldon sound, notably through the addition of Francois Auger on drums. The overall feel of the album is somewhat monotonous, as the reliance on the flow of earlier Heldon takes precedence over the new angle on most of the material. Leaving the live bonus tracks aside, here's a synopsis of the 4 tracks originally released on this album: "Marie Virginie C." - I'd have to study linguistics for decades to summon words fit to describe the magic and grandeur of this piece. After hearing Agneta Nilssen as my first exposure to Heldon, this track came as a shock to me. It adheres to the flow principle, which was largely abandoned for the last two Heldon albums, but introduces new drummer Auger as a fitting percussionist for Pinhas' writing style. The swelling energy of this song climaxes with astounding drum technique, as well as bubbling moogs and synths and Pinhas' trademark guitar style (and Fripp's trademark tone, of course). Few prog compositions capture the energy of this piece, despite its loose foundation. "Elephanta" - I used to skip this track all the time. It's an entirely percussive piece, composed by Auger (credited with Drums, percussion and events), which seems pointless and self-indulgent at first listen. One day, I told my friend to throw on his vinyl copy so that we could get off on "MVC", and when this followed up after it, we were both too... uh, lets say lazy to get up and take the needle off. I sort of gritted my teeth for the first few minutes, but my friend has a lot of house plants and the jungle effect came into full force. By the end of it, which I'd probably only heard once before, I was captivated. There are some very interesting electronic twists to the percussive symphony, and my head space at the time was very open to them. "MVC II" - How this is a sequel to "MVC", I'll never know. Auger's percussion builds, but the drums never take off; Pinhas leaves the guitar in its case and, aside from the sporadic moog chirp, supplies only a plodding monotonous line of electronics; Gauthier is absent and Batard's bass may as well have been, too. "Toward the Red Line" - Represents most of side two on the vinyl, and given the presence of Magma's Janick Top on bass and fracello, you'd think you'd be in for a treat. It took a few pained listens for me to even discern Top's contribution, and even then, I wasn't impressed. It sounds like three prog frogs got together to jam, but had too much wine before hand to do anything worthwhile with their studio time. In my most drug addled state, this piece fails to appeal to me as more than electronic jell-o. I don't like jell-o. The two live tracks don't do a whole lot to break the monotony, but are welcome additions to a C+ album. I would recommend it, however, solely for the first track, with the caveat that the rest of the material is luke-warm by comparison. Gary Niederhoff

HELDON - STAND BY (CD) Take a whole bunch of Fripp-style guitar circa the Starless and Bible Black album, mix it with electronic, near-industrial soundscapes, and you have Stand By. This is pretty alien stuff. Basically each piece relies on spacy, sci-fi analog keyboards that alternate between monolithic repetition of patterns, and eerie echoes, screeches, and skronks. The guitar accompaniment is either "Fracture"-like creepy-crawly tension/structure, or "Starless and Bible Black" style howling chaos. Drums are somewhat intermittent; sometimes a martial aggressive drum beat drives things into semi-industrial mode, and other times the drums are nearly non-existent, letting the keyboards and guitars drift off into outer space.

2-6-2007 pagina 18 van 24

The textures here are pretty intriguing. The guitars have a grainy, crunchy, jagged sound that suits the style well. The keyboards all have a cold, echo-y, overly electronic sound to them (as opposed to mimicking a natural sound); they always remind me of the soundtrack to a science fiction movie from the 70s. Maybe the music would fit with "Black Hole" or "Tron" or something like that... The good thing is that Heldon can capture that KC/Fripp guitar pretty well; the downside is that it will never compare to the splendor of the real thing (for me, anyway). However, Heldon is no KC rip-off; they just take an element of that style, and apply it to something new. King Crimson fans might like this, as well as anybody that enjoys the electronic side of prog. This might even appeal to those that also enjoy modern trance, Techno, and industrial music. Also, some Magma members are present as well! All in all, Stand By is a very interesting CD. It is worth checking out if you want to feast your ears on something different. Heather Mackenzie

JEAN MICHEL JARRE - OXYGENE (CD) Jean Michel Jarre is the son of the great film composer . After releasing work in films, theatre, and commercials, it was Oxygene that would prove to be his breakthrough, an unprecedented success for French popular music in the 1970s. Riding the heat of the era where progressive music thrived, it reached #2 on the British charts at the time of its release, and has since gone on to sell more than 15 million copies internationally. Jarre's keyboard weaponry consists of ARP, EMI synthi AKS, VCS3, and RMI Harmonic synthesizers, Mellotron, Farfisa and Eminent organs, as well as a credited "Rhythmin' computer" (i.e., Korg rhythm machine). The composition is split into six parts, lending it a further 'symphonic' sensibility in its form. "Part I" represents a prelude and sets the mood of much of the remainder of the album. One almost thinks of Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" if situated underwater: a plush bed of funereal strings in G minor with synthesizer effects jetting upward like air bubbles escaping from a breathing hose. A mournful synth taking up the main melody wails and whistles, before bass-register and brass synths gradually emerge. With the shift to "Part II," a 6/8 rhythm line enters, building to a shuffle. Here, the main melody is more animated and Jarre fills in the space of minor-key strings by coaxing additional effects out of the synths including lasers and tunneling echoes, though overall the relaxed atmosphere is sustained. "Part III," in C minor, is a solemn march with the whistling synthesizer returning. "Part IV" is the most well-known theme of the album. Continuing in C minor, again with a shuffling 6/8 gait, the melody is astonishingly simple but effective, planting itself into the listener's head very quickly. This was released as a single, and also made into a charming video consisting entirely of penguins waddling along to the music. "Part V" is actually comprised of two sections. The first half is given to a dreamlike, airy ambient section that represents the first appearance of a major key tonality. To me, this section presages similar work the following year of David Bowie and Brian Eno on Low (e.g., compare this with the opening seconds of "Another Career in a New Town," or the solemnity of mood found in "Warszawa"). This, however, dissolves into a slightly darker segment with a sequenced bass pattern, more akin to Tangerine Dream from the same period. "Part VI" is the 'cool down' portion of the album, with an easing Latin beat and synthesizers surging and phasing like waves on the beach. Considered to be one of the key albums in making 1970s electronic music popular, the recording and sound quality of this one holds up very well, and the six sections complement each other well in form and

2-6-2007 pagina 19 van 24

fit. Oxygene is more accessible than the output of Jarre's peers in the electronic music instrumental genre were typically releasing, and indeed is one of those albums where all of the music could be easily absorbed in just one sitting without tiring the listener out, while still retaining enough interest to warrant repeated returns. Highly recommended, especially to analog synth lovers. Joe McGlinchey

KHAN - SPACE SHANTY (CD) An obscure album with quite a large reputation in circles, Khan's Space Shanty is an item I couldn't wait to finally hear when it got reissued on CD in 2004. And, like Mr. Eichler, I came away let down by my expectations. Not that I don't think it's a good album; I do think that it's pretty good. But I hear a lot of pretty good albums over the course of a year and I was expecting something really special here. Oh, well. Space Shanty is notable for being the recorded debut of Steve Hillage, the renowned progressive guitarist. Considering that the band included keyboard virtuoso Dave Stewart, then with Egg, Khan was a one-off with quite a pedigree. The music, which is a bluesier, harder rocking take on the basic Canterbury style, is mostly very good. The lyrics and vocals mostly are not. Nick Greenwood is a decent enough bassist but he has an emotive vocal style (think of Freddie Mercury trying to sound like Peter Hammill) and often launches into overwrought passages that draw attention to the mediocre lyrics and diminish the impact of the neat things that Hillage and Stewart do. So it should be no surprise that the tracks I like the most rely the least on the vocals; the title track for instance, wherein Hillage and Stewart engage in some really nice interplay on the instrumental middle of the song. "Stranded" which has the only vocal melody on the entire record that I find to be particularly memorable is another solid thumbs-up. The dippy, benignly lumbering "Mixed Up Man From the Mountains," however, earns its Grand Funk Railroad comparisons and I find it to be utterly pedestrian save for a Hillage guitar solo. "Driving to " is better, but not by great strides. The persistent vocals and mediocre lyrics are distractions, although Hillage rescues the track with some excellent playing. "Stargazers" is better still: the vocals aren't as much of a detriment and the tricky instrumental parts contrast well with the hummable verses and chorus. "Hollow Stone" is also good I think the vocals are actually a positive here and they contribute to the sweeping mood of the piece, even if the overall impression on me isn't as "epic" as the band probably intended. In sum, while I wouldn't recommend that people run out to buy this album, I do think that anyone with an interest in Steve Hillage or Canterbury in general would do well to pick it up as a worthy supplement after first obtaining the more important titles. NATIONAL HEALTH - PLAYTIME (CD) Although together longer than any other variant of the band, this Alan Gowen-led quartet was largely lost to the mists of history prior to this release. It's somewhat ironic that this live album from National Health consists of recordings of a lineup that never actually produced a studio record. Recorded after the release (the first four tracks in France, the rest in the U.S.) of Of Queues and Cures and before the band imploded for good, it was a last gasp for National Health. The material is taken from various sources, with only a couple of tunes coming from the two previous studio efforts ("Dreams Wide Awake" and "Squarer for Maud"). "Flanagan's People" would appear, in much shorter form, on the Gowen tribute album D.S. al Coda, while "Play

2-6-2007 pagina 20 van 24

Time" actually comes from Gowen's days in Gilgamesh. The other pieces had either been in live rotation for a while or were freshly written but not-otherwise recorded in the studio. Adding to the fairly unique product is the presence of a second guitarist, Alain Eckert, on three of the French tracks. One certainty that this disc proves is just how good these guys were as players. Gowen's work, in particular, was an eye-opener to me. The complex twists and turns that mark the National Health style were handled with skill and flair. Only truly talented guys could rip through a vastly faster version of "Dreams Wide Awake" than emerged from the studio. That being said, the sum of the parts is somehow not completely fulfilling. Gowen favored a more improvisational approach to the music than did Dave Stewart, and the result is a lot of music that ambles around without any sense of purpose. Yes, the playing is nice, but it doesn't really connect that well. In fact, aside from the material I was already familiar with, only "Nowadays a Silhouette" really sticks to me. Overall, this is an interesting artifact of this period in the band's history, and it is a fun listen. Fans of National Health, particularly of Gowen's more relaxed style, will enjoy it. I wouldn't recommend it for a starting point for new fans, however. Jon Byrne

RENé VAN DER WOUDEN - PRO SEQUENTIA (CDR) This is René's first album, and an impressive one at that. There are obvious influences from different European electronic music styles, and well done at that. And that alone should be enough to make this a worthwhile album. But what really matters is René's command of melody. Even though this is a very sequencer driven album, there's a strong melodic element, an uplifting quality to the music that I seldom hear these days. There are five long pieces, giving René plenty of room to show his ability. My favorites are Prosa 3 and Prosa 5, both very heavy sequencer pieces, but also very positive melodically as well. Highly recommended. Scott Raymond / NY/USA

MIKE OLDFIELD - TUBULAR BELLS (CD) This was the release that launched the Virgin label as well as Oldfield's career. As can be expected, the music lives up to the impact it had. The opening theme will be familiar to those who have seen The Exorcist, as it was used as the soundtrack for said movie. It is a theme both simple and complex, with minimal themes played together on piano and organ to produce a polyrhythmic effect. The track doesn't stay in this creepy mood, though, moving through Oldfield's usual alternations of pastoral simplicity, building tension and energetic disruption of this tension which usually leads into a whole new theme. Oldfield is the one of the premiere multi-instrumentalists of prog, and it's perhaps more fair to compare others to him than vice versa. Still, for those who are looking for a comparison, both Clearlight and Pekka Pohjola come to mind, although both are similar more in approach than in results, perhaps. I'm a big fan of Oldfield, and recommend this album without hesitation. Most of his work isn't really for people who require the high energy levels of prog subgenres like fusion or prog-metal, but I think anyone with enough patience can learn to appreciate and value these albums. MIKE OLDFIELD - HERGEST RIDGE (CD) For his follow-up to the enormously succesful Tubular Bells, Mike

Oldfield opted to go for the same formula of two long tracks, but with a change of mood. Inspired by the countryside surrounding his new home, he created music based on the mostly peaceful environment he now lived in. The mood is sedate, even soporific, and Oldfield could easily be accused of aimless meandering. For me, though, the album effectively refutes such claims about eight minutes in with the sublime use of oboes. The heart-meltingly beautiful section that follows the oboes' introduction has to be some of the best-arranged music Oldfield has ever produced. The music continues sedately, and this would be one of the ultimate albums to go to sleep by at night, were it not for the fact that the mood is shattered part way through the second half with what is often referred to as the "storm" section. Normally a louder section on an otherwise quiet album would serve as a wonderful release, but here the music is poor; and rather than being a liberating part of the album, it is just plain irritating. The synthesizer staccato, not always at a constant pace, signaling the first rain drops, I can live with. Just. The annoying part is the six-minute repetition of the same riff with muted and largely uninteresting solo guitar playing over the top. The poor quality of the music here turns what could have been an invigorating interlude into a jarring anomaly. That said, the bulk of the album is very good, and in parts excellent. The second half makes it an album unsuitable for going to sleep to, but there is enough here to keep the keen listener engaged throughout. Hergest Ridge is very much a walk through the countryside. Slow and pleasant, its worth resides in the intrinsic beauty of simple things rather than gaudy and flashy excess. Mike Oldfield's first three albums are considered his classic trilogy, and for me this album deserves its place there, even if I consider it to be the least of the three. Conrad Leviston

IRENE PAPAS - ODES (CD) Irene Papas is an international star best known for her work in the films The Guns of Navarone and Zorba the Greek (both with Anthony Quinn) and her lead in Elektra. She had worked previously with Vangelis earlier on in the 1970s, in Aphrodite Child's 666, turning in a radical vocal performance on the track " ," that to my understanding delayed the release of the album. Odes is really like a Vangelis solo album bequeathed in Papas' name, as he is clearly the driving force of this. The synthesizers and percussive effects fit snuggly within his 70s Polydor albums. However, what sets this one apart from the other albums of this prolific period in his career is that most of the material is comprised of traditional Greek songs, save for two instrumentals, "La Danse du Feu" and "Racines." While the unhinged " " on 666 called to mind something along the lines of a Diamanda Galas, Papas' vocal performance on this effort is much more conservative. Combined with the space drawn by Vangelis, the musical product here reminds me of the future work Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance though with a smoother and less elemental tone. This can be divined in "Neranzoula" and "Le Fleuve," where melody comes to the fore; these are the two finest moments on the album. The songs capture the various shades of Greece beautifully, from the martial "Les 40 Braves" to the soothing "Menousis." Papas adjusts her affect accordingly, defiant and imperial on the former, then hospitable and genial on the latter. This album provides a welcome inroad for increasing one's exposure to Greek folk through the use of modern synthesizers and capable voice. Joe McGlinchey

STEVE ROACH - THE MAGNIFICENT VOID (CD)

2-6-2007 pagina 22 van 24

If Seinfeld was the show about nothing, The Magnificent Void may well be the album about nothing. Guessing from the title and Stanislav Grof's distressingly New Age theories about "the Void" on the back cover, this recording is 's exploration of the concept of emptiness. These seventy minutes of slow-moving, ponderous music remind me in some ways of Tangerine Dream's Zeit or AMM's The Inexhaustible Document, though The Magnificent Void doesn't really sound like either of those albums. Spanning eight ambient soundscapes, this piece consists entirely of electronic tones fading in, occasionally intersecting with various other found sounds, and then fading out a few minutes later. Sometimes these tones overlap, but generally not; pretty much everything occurs uninterrupted in the foreground. Roach's sound is very immediate and the album flows with a real sense of anticipation, as if at any moment something might happen, but it never really does. And... that's about it. Trying to describe a work like this on a track-by-track basis would be an exercise in futility. There is neither rhythm nor melody to be found anywhere. The beginning and ending point of any number feels arbitrary; the whole thing could have just as easily been one long track without a single change to any of the music. It all comes together somehow, though, and the album confidently transcends the dull spacy noodling often associated with "space music." One of the reasons I wanted to write about The Magnificent Void is that I've read a lot of really unhelpful reviews about Steve Roach's work on-line; they invariably judge the merit of one of his albums almost purely by the individual listeners' experience. Perhaps this is a common problem with reviewing music shelved in the New Age section of music stores. For example, this Amazon review, while unintentionally funny, is not particularly helpful: "You'll find on this CD a lot of sounds which do not inspire any emotion at all, as the entire CD is composed as sequel of sounds with no deepness, with no emotion, with no any sense at all and without any message. If the music do not inspires anything, then it's useless to listen it at all." But this better written and more positive comment isn't really any more useful: "I swear I was transported to some isle in the middle of a distant ocean bearing witness to life outside our solar system for the first time." To fall back to visceral, personal feeling of this sort as the sole basis for an album review doesn't seem satisfactory; what I find to be moving may fall on someone else's deaf ears. And yet I'm finding it just as difficult as those reviewers to give a good picture of this work without resorting to sentiment myself. So, I'll say that I find The Magnificent Void to be gripping and affective in a way that few such meditative albums are. On a dark and rainy day, in the right mindest, a spin of this exploration of nothing will sometimes have me witnessing cosmic events, as well. For those new or old to this sort of album, The Magnificent Void gets an easy recommendation. Jon Fry

TANGERINE DREAM - ZEIT (CD) Zeit (that's German for "time"), the third album by Tangerine Dream, is an example of early electronic ambient music. As such I think it's difficult to have a strong feeling about it either way, although there are apparently some people who consider it a masterwork and some who really hate it. In any event, it's an album that challenges one's conception of what music is and what function music is supposed to fulfill. Like most of the early Tangerine Dream albums, Zeit plays like the soundtrack to cosmic occurrences. The goings-on here, however, are happening really slow. If parts of Alpha Centauri reminded me of a journey through the stars, Zeit plays like the formation of one of

2-6-2007 pagina 23 van 24

those stars. Each of the four tracks are similar, though the first one, "Birth of Liquid Plejades," not only has the coolest name but also has interesting enough music that it merits my full attention whenever I put it on. In addition to the electric keyboards, Zeit was recorded with a cello quartet and the cellos are put to excellent use right away: "Liquid Plejades" begins as a sustained drone of cellos with minimal background electronic effects. After about seven minutes, the cellos are enveloped completely by a synthesizer and organ which then slowly wind along for another 13 minutes. The control of the tension throughout is superb. I think that the rest of the album doesn't reward focused listening (while sober, anyway) as much as "Liquid Plejades," but I don't think that was the purpose of the recording. The remaining three pieces are like sonic paintings, except that you have to "look" at them a certain amount of time before they're over. Sometimes the musical events happen so slowly that a normal ear (an ear trained to absorb musical events that occur over shorter durations) will have to make an in-flight adjustment. Sometimes there are just tuneless sounds and pulses. I would imagine that this kind of music won't be appealing to some listeners. "Just as something is about to happen, it doesn't," writes Paul Russell in the liner notes of the 2002 re master, and 74 minutes of things not quite happening may well be too much, even for fans of other Tangerine Dream albums. But if you're open to the idea of ambient music, I think that Zeit is a very good album As sonic atmosphere, Zeit definitely works at least for me. Matt P.

RENé VAN DER WOUDEN - ALCHEMIA (CDR) Alchemia is René Van Der Wouden's second album, and though different from Pro Sequentia, it's every bit as good. This time, René takes a more thoughtful approach to the melody. There's still sequencers here, just a bit more subdued. The music is every bit as complex as Pro Sequentia, just a bit more spacey, more atmospheric. Again, there are five long pieces, with lots of room for René's wonderful melodies. A nice addition to anyone's collection, particularly for those who like Jean Michel Jarre or Vangelis. Scott Raymond / NY/USA

PARALLEL WORLDS - OBSESSIVE SURREALISM (CD) Greek musician Bakis Sirros is Parallel Worlds, and his Obsessive Surrealism album is an experimental work that is perfectly wedded to Ian Boddy's DiN label, ambient electronica that pushes the sonic envelope. "Beneath Fear" percolates with restrained aggression as light bass, beats and electronics come together sneakily in a vaguely sinister fashion. The mood reminds me much of UK favorite Node, known for their dark take on Berlin school. Though retro fans should enjoy the mellotron choirs in the opening track, Bakis' music covers a variety of electronic territory. For example, "Into the Caves of the Mind" veers into dark industrial ambient like Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber's Synaesthesia project. "Empty Human Cells" is representative of the offerings, highly synthesized processed sounds that are uniquely assembled into tightly arranged adventurous compositions. "Interlude" gurgles and churns its way along. Bass and beats figure prominently in several tracks, such as "Reflective." Though it all has an edge to it, the music has a surprising accessibility as well. Still, the tone remains murky throughout much of it, typified by "Mindmists" as it ambles forward. A notable exception is the energetic number "Distracted" before the melancholy atmospheric "Crying Spells" brings the disc to a close. Recommended. Phil Derby / Electroambient Space

DEBORAH MARTIN & J. ARIF VERNER - ANNO DOMINI (CD) The music is ambient music in the tradition of Western US ambient artists like Michael Stearns, combining slowly evolving synth textures, bell-like timbres, and other beautiful sounds with cavernous reverberation effects. The music has a mystical religious element, too, with Latin lyrics and phrases incorporated in subtle ways. The combination results in a sort of ambient liturgy.Verner and Martin start the CD with a Kyrie. They layer freely sung Kyrie's and Christe's over slowly shifting synth textures & cathedral-like reverb. The rest of the CD follows in a similar vein, with freely sung Latin words and phrases layered over shifting drones and synth pads.Anno Domini captures the spirit of the CD in one track. It starts with the sounds of church bells ringing and then introduces synth strings and pads that drift over each other. On top of this, Martin sings, chants and whispers"Anno Domini", giving the music a sort of abstracted religious quality. Throughout most of the CD, the music is pulseless or is very freely performed. The instrumentation and arrangements are similar from track to track, so thatthe music is never jarring. The CD is nicely paced, with a peak close to the end with Dona Nobis Pacem (Give us peace). This track has more of a live band feel, with a regular pulse, percussion, guitar and vocals giving it drive.Deborah Martin & J.Arif Verner's Anno Domini is a deep ambient work that evokes the ancient mysteries of forgotten rituals. It's another solid ambient release from Spotted Peccary, a label that seems to get stronger with each release. The CD should appeal to fans of Michael Stearns, Steve Roach and other Western US ambient artists. synthtopia
