Between Winds and Clouds Bin Yang Chapter 5 Sinicization and Indigenization: The Emergence of the Yunnanese Introduction As the state began sending soldiers and their families, predominantly Han Chinese, to Yunnan, 1 the Ming military presence there became part of a project of colonization. Soldiers were joined by land-hungry farmers, exiled officials, and profit-driven merchants so that, by the end of the Ming period, the Han Chinese had become the largest ethnic population in Yunnan. Dramatically changing local demography, and consequently economic and cultural patterns, this massive and diverse influx laid the foundations for the social makeup of contemporary Yunnan. The interaction of the large numbers of Han immigrants with the indigenous peoples created a 2 new hybrid society, some members of which began to identify themselves as Yunnanese (yunnanren) for the first time. Previously, there had been no such concept of unity, since the indigenous peoples differentiated themselves by ethnicity or clan and tribal affiliations. This chapter will explore the process that led to this new identity and its reciprocal impact on the concept of Chineseness. Using primary sources, I will first introduce the indigenous peoples and their social customs 3 during the Yuan and early Ming period before the massive influx of Chinese immigrants. Second, I will review the migration waves during the Ming Dynasty and examine interactions between Han Chinese and the indigenous population. The giant and far-reaching impact of Han migrations on local society, or the process of sinicization, that has drawn a lot of scholarly attention, will be further examined here; the influence of the indigenous culture on Chinese migrants—a process that has won little attention—will also be scrutinized. -

Shin At the start of his Record of All Vassals (Xian bin lu), a text completed no later than 1591, Luo Yuejiong, a scholar from Jiangxi (in southern China) whom we otherwise know little about, seeks to explain to his read- ers why his historical survey of “non- Chinese” peoples (si yi) deserves at- tention. In Luo’s telling, in his time, “scholars who are fond of antiquity” (haogu zhi shi) have generally taken to focus on texts composed before the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) and ignore those from later periods. But while scholars who have developed a degree of familiarity with pre- Han sources might like to think of themselves as “broadly learned” (bo- xue), Luo observes, their intellectual horizon is, in fact, not unlike “the outlook of a frog at the bottom of a well.” By contrast, in composing his general study of those “non- Chinese” peoples who have, over time, inter- acted with China (Zhongguo; literally, “central dominion”), Luo Yuejiong points out, he has consciously consulted a wide range of sources, includ- ing in particular materials that are outside -

THE TRANSMISSION OF SANQU SONGS, WRITERS’ REPUTATION, AND LITERATI NETWORK IN THE MID MING: LOCAL AND TRANS-LOCAL CONSIDERATIONS * TIAN YUAN TAN 1. INTRODUCTION The mid Ming is an extremely interesting and significant period in understanding the development of sanqu 散曲 (literally ‘dispersed or individual songs’),1 a kind of song verse in Chinese literature. After its so-called ‘golden age’ in the Yuan dynasty (1260-1368), sanqu went through a period of decline during the early decades of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) in which we could find sanqu writings by only a few major writers such as Tang Shi 湯式 (fl.1383) and Zhu Youdun 朱 有燉 (1374-1442). However, as scholars have observed, the ‘revival’ of the genre then took place around the second half of the fifteenth century and extended into the sixteenth century.2 * I would like to thank the participants in this conference for their questions and comments. Bol Nathan Vedal Scholarly Culture in Sixteenth and Seventeenth-Century China Abstract This dissertation traces the development of scholarly disciplines in late imperial China. This project focuses on linguistic study during a period when philology was woven into a comprehensive system of analyzing language, music, and cosmology. Historians typically assert that China underwent an important intellectual transition in the 18th century, arising from a new emphasis on the philological analysis of texts. I argue instead that the intellectual shift over the course of the 15th through 19th centuries can be more accurately understood as a change in methods of studying language, rather than a newly found attention toward it. Philology flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, but was not an isolated field, as it would come to be in the 18th. -

What a kind of role played by missionaries in the modernization of the Qing China has been a long-lasting issue since the early 20th century. Due to political reasons, the contribution of the Christian mission was either underestimated in view of Cultural Invasion paradigm or overemphasized in view of Modernization paradigm. The thesis employs a less-distorted model, Liberal Theology, to analyze the influences of liberal missionaries, exemplified by Timothy Richard, on the social reform in the modernization movement of the late Qing. It describes the relevance of missionary activities to the development of Chinese history in view of the biographical records of Christian missions. The entry point of this presence is traced in the text through Richard’s activities to contribute to famine relief, literary work, reform advocacy, higher education, cross-cultural exchange, a product of the development of his ideas and strategies gained from the promotion of European models of modernization. Particularly, the thesis brings to light Richard’s symbiotic conception between religion and secularism (i.e., science, technology, education, and political reform).
