Goals To provide all students at Marist with the opportunity to play cricket To maximise the level of participation of students who choose to play cricket To provide qualified coaches for the college's cricket teams To provide all players with the opportunity to be coached in all facets of the game To educate Marist cricketers in the etiquette of the sport and ensure that coaches and players play the game accordingly To develop all teams, and especially the First XI, into successful combinations where all boys are able to contribute to a team's success To keep the college and general community informed of the progress of its cricket teams To maximise the level of satisfaction students gain from playing cricket so they will want to play the game "next year" To assist with the running of junior cricket in the A.C.T. Just weeks prior to the start of the season, we were advised by Cricket ACT that we would be one of several associations piloting Cricket Australia’s new format for the under 11 and 12 age groups. The changes included: Playing on a shorter pitch with smaller boundaries; Reduced numbers per team; Reduced playing time to suit today’s time poor families; and Maximum participation for all participants Cricket Australia is currently reviewing all of the data and feedback with a view to making necessary tweaks and introducing it Australia wide next season. The Club fielded 21 teams across the various competitions, although overall player numbers were considerably down this year. There were many highlights: The First XI once again winning all three formats of the ASC competition; The under 15 division 1 team winning the 2-day comp after narrowing losing the T20 final; The amazing depth in our under 11 age group as two of our division 1 teams won their respective competitions. There were also many individual highlights. These included: 7 centuries; 11 five wicket hauls; 4 hat-tricks (two of which were claimed by Angus Wheadon on consecutive weekends); three Marist boys named ACT junior cricketer of the week There were also some significant achievements at the Cricket ACT junior presentation with Nicholas Honeyman announced as the young cricketer of the year. Callum O’Brien and Levi Kiwi were awarded spirit of cricket awards. Our First XI team enjoyed another amazing season being undefeated in all of its 15 ASC matches. It wasn’t easy though as the T20 final went down to the final over and they started the second day of what was effectively the final of the 2-day comp with their backs to the wall against Grammar. It’s no coincidence that great sides always seem to find a way to win. In December, the boys travelled to Lismore to compete in the 44th Annual Marist carnival. Despite getting off to a promising start they had to settle for a 4th place finish. Our coaches, Brett Freebody and Gary Goodman have done an amazing job over the years as the Marist First XI teams have lost only 12 of their last 120 games. Brett has decided to stand down after three years in the role - three unbeaten years across all ASC competitions. The Committee thanks Brett for his dedication, passion and commitment throughout those three years. Brett’s shoes will be tough to fill. At the start of the season we faced the prospect of six of our boys missing out on cricket due to lack of numbers in the under 18 age group. However, we entered into a partnership with the Tuggeranong cricket club and entered a composite team into the under 18 competition. I’d like to thank Aaron Sharplin and the Tuggeranong club for all of their support with this partnership. The team was superbly coached by Billy Thomson from Tuggeranong and all of the feedback from our 3 Cricket Club 2016-2017

    CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY AUCTION SATURDAY 20th OCTOBER 2018 LANCASHIRE COUNTY CRICKET GROUND VIEWING from 10am AUCTION 1.30pm Auctioneer: Tim Davidson 1 Conditions of Sale The CMS welcomes items of cricket memorabilia for its auctions. There will normally be just two auctions in the year - March and October. The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged etc., or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia to all its members (including overseas) and only CMS members are eligible to bid for items. Members are welcome to send postal bids which should be in writing/e-mail before the auction. Bids will normally start at 60% of the bid unless there is a higher reserve price or other postal bids. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will usually be sent by recorded delivery. Postage will be paid by the successful postal bidder. The CMS will be responsible for the items sent for auction while they are in the possession of the CMS. The CMS welcomes items of particular and unusual interest for the auctions. Non-members can send items for auction but we would discourage large quantities of books, magazines etc. A list of prices realised at an auction will be included with the next magazine due for publication after the auction.

Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down.

    Kent County Cricketers A to Z Part Two 1919-1939 By Derek Carlaw Statistics by John Winnifrith This collection of biographies have been written, on behalf of the ACS, by Derek Carlaw. For those readers wishing to obtain more detailed statistical information, it is recommended that a search is undertaken on the relevant pages of the CricketArchive website ( http://cricketarchive.com/ ). Kent County Cricketers A to Z Part Two 1919 to 1939 Introduction Part Two of the Kent A to Z covers the 92 cricketers who made their entry into first-class cricket for Kent between the wars. With 12 Championship titles, 330 wins and only 49 defeats, Yorkshire dominated throughout the two decades, but Kent could reasonably claim to be the most successful of the Southern counties, twice ending runners-up and in only three seasons failing to finish in the top half of the table. During those inter-war years, cricket was becoming increasingly professional. Of the names listed in the county averages in the 1921 Wisden, over 57% were amateurs. By 1931 the figure had fallen to 41%; and in the last pre-war season it was down to 33%. Kent, in common with one or two other counties, fought hard against the prevailing trend. Throughout the period, they stuck to their long- established policy of endeavouring to field a minimum of three amateurs in every match. In practice, they were quite frequently unable to do so, especially early in the season but, of the 92 cricketers listed in the following pages, 60, i.e. over 65%, were, in the idiom of the time, ‘Gentlemen’.

    2014-5 Obituaries I am once again indebted to Mike Talbot-Butler who painstakingly ensures that wherever posible recently deceased colleagues are remembered at both the League’s AGM and also annually in this handbook. The following is a list, compiled by Mike, of Cheshire people or those associated with Cheshire cricket and the County League who have sadly died during the past 12 months. Please accept my apologies for anybody who may have inadvertently been overlooked. Peter ellwood Died on April 10, 2014, aged 92. A former outstanding batsman at Weaste and Monton whom I can remember well, he was the father of Tony Elwood who played for Grappenhall before becoming chairman of Southport & Birekdale CC and still turns out for Toft 40s. JOhn thistlewood Said to be a modest cricketer at 3rd and 4th XI level at Chester, but one of their most stalwart servants off the field, John died on May 13, 2014 at 65. His sons Ian and Richard still play at Filkins Lane. david RobinsOn A leading Labour councillor in Chester, who played for the club 2nd XI until fairly recently, recently . David died o May 30, aged 68. Spencer edwards Aged 82, a former 2nd and 3rd XI player at Christleton who served a long and distinguished stint as an umpire. Spencer was a notable benefactor and presented the club with the electronic scoreboard which was erected in 2012 sheila Kelly The widow of Alderley Edge and Cheshire’s famous Pat Kelly, Sheila died at her Wilmslow home on July 3, aged 84. Pat, you will remember, served as president of the League from 1985 – 87.
