Contrary to classical scientific studies, travel writing can be considered as an alternative research model. Although travelogues are based on highly subjective data for the social science as a narrative genre, it provides intense and rich scientific materials.

  • Archaeology of Destruction: Toprakkale
IRAQ (2018) 80 113–137 Doi:10.1017/irq.2018.13 113 ARCHAEOLOGY OF DESTRUCTION: TOPRAKKALE By BÜLENT GENÇ Toprakkale is the site that constitutes the starting point for the archaeology of Urartu, but the history of the largely destructive early excavations of the site is shrouded in darkness. The presence of items on the antiquities market said to come from the Van region attracted the interest of Austen Henry Layard, which led to brief excavations at the site of Toprakkale by the British Museum under Hormuzd Rassam in 1877, followed by further also brief investigations by K. Kamsarakan as well as continued illegal excavations. It is commonly held that Carl Friedrich Lehmann-Haupt and Waldemar Belck excavated here between 1898– 1899, but research performed in the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Minister’s Office reveals their claim to have excavated there to be fraudulent and empty. This article uses primary source material from Ottoman archives to investigate the excavation history of one of the most iconic sites for the beginnings of Urartian Studies, and compels us to re-evaluate what we think we know about Toprakkale and the provenance of the objects associated with it. Toprakkale/Rusaḫinili Qilbanikai is located roughly 5 km east of the Van Citadel (Ṭušpa), the Urartian capital. The limestone natural hill on which the citadel stands is connected to Mount Zimzim behind it (Fig. 1). The citadel is 400 metres long on the north-south axis and 60–70 metres wide. The Urartian name of Toprakkale (Rusaḫinili Qilbanikai) is accepted to have derived from a tablet dating to the reign of Rusa (II?), son of Argišti (Lehmann-Haupt 1906: 105, Fig.

  • Collections in the European Museums – the Cultural Heritage of the Ancient Caucasus Scattered Across a Continent
Vol. 72 | No. 9 | Sep 2016 International Scientific Researches Journal Collections in the European Museums – the Cultural Heritage of the Ancient Caucasus scattered across a Continent Dr. Nourida Ateshi Department of History and Archaeology, Khazar University, Baku Institute for Caucasus Research, Berlin, Email: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT Quite a few problems have been found in the historiography of the late Bronze and early Iron Ages in the Southern Caucasus; some of them had been caused by the incoherency of the cultural material accessible to international research. Investigating intensively the material in the museums, of the archive documents, and the original excavation reports in German, Russian and Azerbaijani we find different versions of historiography of the Caucasus collection in the Museum for Prehistory and early History (MVF) in Berlin for the very same period. Russian and international archaeologic circles should be drawn to this problem. Beginning in the middle of the 19th century there was a rush on the archaeological sites in the Caucasus. Archaeological excavations often were not taken out for scientific reasons but rather for material gains, or they were done by hobby archaeologists from various countries, disturbing the archaeological coherence. In establishing the various collections on the late Bronze and early Iron Ages in the Caucasus they broke the history and heritage of the Caucasus to parts. Finds were sent to the museums of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Lyon, to Vienna and to Berlin. This article submits the Caucasus collections in European museums to a thorough review. The scattering of the artefacts of the Caucasus collection in the Museum for Prehistory and early History (MVF) in Berlin across museums in Russia, in the Caucasus and in Europe is still causing problems to science in Europe, especially in Germany and in Russia, as well as in Azerbaijan.

  • Critical Remarks on Archaeological Research in the 19Th and 20Th Centuries on the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages in the Southern Caucasus Nourida Gadirova-Ateshi
doi: 10.2143/ANES.54.0.0000000 ANES 54 (2017) 183-212 Critical remarks on archaeological research in the 19th and 20th centuries on the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages in the Southern Caucasus Nourida GADIROVA-ATESHI Abstract This paper examines aspects of early archaeological research in the southern Caucasus, especially Azerbaijan, during the tsarist and Soviet periods. It argues that the imprint left by the early antiquaries was profound and Eurocentric, influencing later investigations. It also argues that these early collections, now mostly held in European museums, should be re-investigated in their own right and in light of recent archaeological discoveries. Research His tory and Historiography of the Caucasian Archaeology: The Early Years Problems in the research history and historiography of Caucasian archaeology related to the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages began to appear as early as 1829. While in work of the Soviet period, under the ruling ideology, the nature of these problems was obvious, they began to take new shapes after the fall of the Soviet Union. The history of Caucasian archaeology is thought to have begun in 1829, when a professor from Hessen, 28-year-old Friedrich Eduard Schulz (1799–1829), visited the Caucasus and voiced his views, and his interpretation of the archaeological data. Carl Ritter, the founder of modern his- torical geography had called the attention of Schulz, a philosopher and scholar of Oriental studies, to this field of research, with the promise of a reasonable chance of success in obtaining new scien- tific results. 1 The French supported Schulz financially and thus he was able to visit Turkey and Iran, including their Armenian regions, several times during 1828 and 1829.

Event, place and performance in the Assyrian landscapes of the Early Iron Age Om¨ ur¨ Harmans¸ah Abstract Performative engagements with specific, culturally significant places were among the primary means of configuring landscapes in the ancient world. Ancient states often appropriated symbolic or ritual landscapes through commemorative ceremonies and building operations. These commemorative sites became event-places where state spectacles encountered and merged with local cult practices. The Early Iron Age inscriptions and reliefs carved on the cave walls of the Dibni Su sources at the site of Birkleyn in Eastern Turkey, known as the ‘Source of the Tigris’ monuments, present a compelling paradigm for such spatial practices. Assyrian kings Tiglath- pileser I (1114–1076 B.C.) and Shalmaneser III (858–824 B.C.) carved ‘images of kingship’ and accompanying royal inscriptions at this impressive site in a remote but politically contested region. This important commemorative event was represented in detail on Shalmaneser III’s bronze repousse´ bands from Imgul-Enlil (Tell Balawat) as well as in his annalistic texts, rearticulating the performance of the place on public monuments in Assyrian urban contexts. This paper approaches the making of the Source of the Tigris monuments as a complex performative place-event. The effect was to reconfigure a socially significant, mytho-poetic landscape into a landscape of commemoration and cult practice, illustrating Assyrian rhetorics of kingship. These rhetorics were maintained by articulate gestures of inscription that appropriated an already symbolically charged landscape in a liminal territory and made it durable through site-specific spatial practices and narrative representations.

It goes on to explore the development of Ar- menian-Kurdish relations with its entire vicissitudes. It comprehensively illustrates manifestations of the Armenian and the Kurdish Questions at international diplomatic forums and the political interactions of the two neighboring nations in the last few decades. The Armenian Question is touched upon here only as much as it is closely linked with the Kurdish Question. This volume brings to the reader's attention that the Kurdish factor has had a negative impact on the development of the Armenian Question and was one of the reasons for the ultimate failure of the Arme nian liberation movement. Ni{ i Vizantija X 481 Graham Jones CONSTANTINE AND HIS MOTHER BUILD A CITY: HELEN OF EDESSA AND MARTYROPOLIS Imperial cities, by definition, intimately connect with imperial rulers. Some, like Niš, grew famous as their birthplaces. Many were renamed to honour the reigning emperor or a member of his family. Others gloried in the walls and monuments with which particular emperors adorned them. With Constantine these imperial gifts began to include churches rather than temples, and the depo- sition of the relics of saints, whose shrines radiated the city’s fame and by ex- tension its benefactor. Imperial munificence was vindicated through the glory of the saints’ lives, their deaths, and the reputed wonder of their miracles. Saint and ruler magnified one another. ‘Augustopolis’ and cities named for saints, for example Sanctos, Xanten on the Rhine, were two expressions of a single idea, the imperial city as personification of majesty and divine approbation. To the studies of Niš as a provincial capital, Constantine’s creation of Constantinople, and the Constantinian devotional and monumental remod- elling of Jerusalem, this paper adds a case-study from the imperial frontier: Martyropolis on the headwaters of the Tigris. Today it is Silvan, a town of south- eastern Turkey, called Mayâfârqîn or plain Fârqîn by its Aramaic-speakers, Muhargin by Kurds, and in Syriac anciently known as Maipherqat. Tradition declared that Constantine and Helena fortified the city, built its Great Church, and safeguarded its water supply; their names were inscribed on its walls. In ad- dressing the issues of the symposium and providing a first unified overview of Silvan’s related archaeology, this article also explores further the presentation of Constantine’s mother Helena as a native of Mesopotamia, not Bithynia as customarily accepted.1 That image adds interest to a wider theme across earlier essays: the likely resonance of her name in Helena’s lifetime.
