Al-Ansari and S. Knutsson Dept. Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, Lulea University, Sweden Abstract The Iraqi marsh lands, which are known as the Garden of Eden, cover an area about 15000- 20000 sq. km in the lower part of the Mesopotamian basin where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers flow. The marshes lie on a gently sloping plan which causes the two rivers to meander and split in branches forming the marshes and lakes. The marshes had developed after series of transgression and regression of the Gulf sea water. The marshes lie on the thick fluvial sediments carried by the rivers in the area. The area had played a prominent part in the history of man kind and was inhabited since the dawn of civilization by the Summarian more than 6000 BP. The area was considered among the largest wetlands in the world and the greatest in west Asia where it supports a diverse range of flora and fauna and human population of more than 500000 persons and is a major stopping point for migratory birds. The area was inhabited since the dawn of civilization by the Sumerians about 6000 years BP. It had been estimated that 60% of the fish consumed in Iraq comes from the marshes. In addition oil reserves had been discovered in and near the marshlands. The climate of the area is considered continental to subtropical. -

Section 8: The Neo-Assyrians The Assyrian Infantry M8-01 The Assyrians of the first millennium BCE are called the Neo-Assyrians to distinguish them from their second-millennium forbears, the Old Assyrians who ran trading colonies in Asia Minor and the Middle Assyrians who lived during the collapse of civilization at the end of the Bronze Age. There is little evidence to suggest that any significant change of population took place in Assyria during these dark centuries. To the contrary, all historical and linguistic data point to the continuity of the Assyrian royal line and population. That is, as far as we can tell, the Neo-Assyrians were the descendants of the same folk who lived in northeast Mesopotamia in Sargon’s day, only now they were newer and scarier. They will create the largest empire and most effective army yet seen in this part of the world, their military might and aggression unmatched until the rise of the Romans. Indeed, the number of similarities between Rome and Assyria — their dependence on infantry, their ferocity in a siege, their system of dating years by the name of officials, their use of brutality to instill terror — suggests there was some sort of indirect connection between these nations, but by what avenue is impossible to say. All the same, if Rome is the father of the modern world, Assyria is its grandfather, something we should acknowledge but probably not boast about. 1 That tough spirit undoubtedly kept the Assyrians united and strong through the worst of the turmoil that roiled the Near East at the end of the second millennium BCE (1077-900 BCE). -

The Environment and the Tigris- Euphrates River System, 1988-2005 ROBERT B AUER In January 1990, engineers in southeastern Turkey observed one of the most incredible events ever seen in that region of the world. The Euphrates River, a 1,900-mile unstoppable force of nature, ran up against an immovable object, the towering walls of Atatürk Dam. For an entire month, the dam stopped the flow of the Euphrates in its tracks while its waters filled a 817 square kilometer reservoir. Atatürk Dam formed the centerpiece of Turkey’s Guneydogu Anadolu Projesi (also known as the GAP Project or the Southeastern Anatolia Project), which was designed to bring irrigation water and hydroelectric power to its citizens living in the southeast. After spending $1.25 billion on the dam, the Turkish government was ready to see the returns.1 Turkey’s downstream neighbors, Syria and Iraq, were less than elated by the impoundment of so much water. The Syrians depended on the Tigris and Euphrates; they are the only major rivers within Syr- ian borders. While Turkey claimed to have fulfilled its water obligations to Syria (guaranteed unilaterally by Turkey in 1987), this was small con- solation to the Syrian farmers already dealing with drought conditions. For Iraq, whose water supply also depended in part on the Euphrates, Syria’s own Tabqa Dam compounded the problem. Culture Studies Armenian Folia Anglistika Armenian Culture from the Semiotic Perspective Armine Matevosyan, Manana Dalalyan Yerevan State University Abstract The present paper goes along the lines of Semiotics, a branch of linguistics. It studies the system of signs which takes the form of words, images, sounds, gestures and objects. Through the usage of signs we represent the linguocultural aspect of our knowledge, ethnic traditions and folklore. The interest we take in the paper is the study of signs and symbols in Armenian culture. Culture, including miniature paining, singing, dancing, architecture and cuisine, may involve any sphere of Armenian identity. Signs and symbols that constitute language and culture are constructed through verbal and non-verbal interactions and are arbitrary. The purpose of our analysis is to specify what why, whom questions in a specific context of situation, as well as in a large context of culture, such as social community, media and communication. Key words: semiotics, culture, communication through signs, cultural identity, science of signs, cuisine, visual signs. Introduction Semiotics is the study of signs and sign using behavior. It was defined by Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure as the study of “the life of signs within society”. It is an academic field dedicated to the study of signs. A sign (for example, the word ship) may be recognized by the presence of its constituent parts, which in semiotic theories is based on the signifier (the container, or the sign's perceptible form: the letters s-h-i-p) and the signified (the meaning or content; the notion conveyed by the signifier: a vessel of considerable size for deepwater navigation). -

The few scholars that have pointed out this dearth of corroborative data have attributed it to an apathetic attitude adopted by Assyria toward the region during both conquest and political control. I argue in this dissertation that the archaeological record reflects Assyrian military strategy rather than indifference. Data from three case studies, Megiddo, Ashdod, and the Western Negev, suggest that the small number of sites with evidence of destruction and even fewer sites with evidence of Assyrian imperial control are a product of a strategy that allowed Assyria to annex the region with less investment than their annals claim. ii Furthermore, Assyria’s network of imperial outposts monitored international highways in a manner that allowed a small local and foreign population to participate in trade and defense opportunities that ultimately benefited the Assyrian core. -

Klasik bilimsel çalışmaların aksine alternatif bir araştırma modeli olarak kabul edilebilecek olan seyahat yazını bir anlatı türü olarak sosyal bilimlerin farklı disiplinleri için oldukça sübjektif verilere dayansa da yoğun ve zengin bir bilimsel materyal sunmaktadır. Bu bağlamda bir Alman oryantalist ve seyyah olan Eduard Sachau (1845-1930) Osmanlı toprakları içerisinde 1879’da başlayarak yaklaşık altı ay süren bir seyahat gerçekleştirmiş ve seyahat notlarını Reise in Syrien und Mesopotamien (Suriye ve Mezopotamya Seyahati) adıyla 1883 yılında Almanya’da kitap olarak yayımlamıştır. Aslında bir filolog olan Sachau, tıpkı bir sosyolog, antropolog ve arkeolog gibi dolaşarak Osmanlı taşrasında yaşayan Arap, Kürt, Türk, Nasturi, Yakubi ve Yezidiler hakkında önemli bilgiler sunmuştur. Bu çalışma, bir bilim insanı olarak Sachau’nun seyahatinin oryantalist bilgi üretim süreci olduğunu iddia etmekte ve onun süreçte bu topladığı bilgiyi farklı yollarla akademik metinlere transfer ettiğini öne sürmektedir. Contrary to classical scientific studies, travel writing can be considered as an alternative research model. Although travelogues are based on highly subjective data for the social science as a narrative genre, it provides intense and rich scientific materials.
