The Green Scare: Radical environmental activism and the invention of “eco-terror- ism” in American superhero comics from 1970 to 1990 by Brendan James Lacy A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfi llment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Architecture Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2021 © Brendan James Lacy 2021 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required fi nal revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract American environmentalism became a recognizable social move- ment in the 1960s. In the following two decades the movement evolved to represent a diverse set of philosophies and developed new protest methods. In the early 1990s law enforcement and govern- ment offi cials in America, with support from extraction industries, created an image of the radical environmental movement as danger- ous “eco-terrorists.” Th e concept was deployed in an eff ort to de-val- ue the environmental movement’s position at a time of heightened environmental consciousness. With the concept in place members of the movement became easier to detain and the public easier to deter through political repression. Th e concept of “eco-terrorism” enters popular media relatively quickly indicated by the proliferation of superhero comics in the ear- ly 1990s that present villainous environmental activists as “eco-ter- rorists.” Th is imagery contrasts comics from 1970 which depicted superheroes as working alongside activists for the betterment of the world.

Per le case editrici minori citiamo la sfortunata Abadazad, The Stardust Kid, Hero Squared e The Life And Times Of Savior 28. Difficile poi dimenticare i progetti più personali dell'autore come l'evocativo Moonshadow, Blood: A Tale, Mercy, Seekers Into The Mystery e l'autobiografico Brooklyn Dreams.

It tells the story of two groups of Transformers led by Fortress Maximus and Scorponokand their adventures on the planet Nebulos ; in the process, it introduces the Headmaster and Targetmaster gimmicks to the storyline. In the Marvel UK Transformers series Transformers Classics: Volume 7 was run as a back-up strip alongside the regular stories. Transformers Classics: Volume 7 Headmasters plot merged with the ongoing Marvel storyline in Transformers issue A group of Autobots, led by Fortress Maximus, leaves Cybertron for the planet Nebulos hoping to forge a new, peaceful existence for themselves, but their arch foes, under the command of Scorponok, follow them, forcing the Autobots to join forces with the natives of that world in the most literal of ways. Soon, Nebulos is being devastated by the Transformers' war, the Decepticons have found their own team of native allies, and the Autobots must leave the planet to keep from destroying it completely. The mini-series was used to introduce the bulk of the toyline to the comics continuity. Many of those toys did not have Earthly Transformers Classics: Volume 7and thus required a different origin than the predominantly Earth-centric forms of the previous three years.

A bright and exciting look into the Transfomers' pastBy Lauren MercedesThis omnibus contains the two mini-series; "The War Within" and "War Within: The Dark Ages", originally produced by Dreamwave. Story wise, it ends on a hanging note that was partially continued in "War Within: The Age of Wrath". Because the company went out of business, "The Age of Wrath" was never finished and can only be found in individual issues. If you're lucky. But don't let that stop you from enjoying this comic!SUMMARY:Based off of G1 (the original cartoon and toyline, not the 2007 live action movies), it's set on Cybertron, long before the Transformers brought their war to Earth. The war between the Autobots and the Decepticons has wrecked havoc to the surface of their planet, leveling cities and leaving countless dead. Sentinel Prime, the Autobot's leader and only hope against Megatron, has been slain. As the council turns to a seemingly simple archivist to become their new Prime, many among the Autobot forces are skeptical; will this Prime be able to end the war decisively? Will he finally put aside endless thinking and hesitating for action? But the newly dubbed Optimus Prime has doubts of his own -- like is this world even worth the cost of life to keep it? If the Decepticons want it so much, why not leave it to them and find a new place to live? As one can imagine, this doesn't go over too well.

Crisis of Infinite Intertexts! Continuity as Adaptation in the Superman Multimedia Franchise Jack Peterson Teiwes ORCID identifier 0000-0001-8956-1602 Doctor of Philosophy November 2015 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the PhD degree Produced on archival quality paper Abstract Since first appearing as a comic book character over three quarters of a century ago, Superman was not only the first superhero, spawning an entire genre of imitators, but also quickly became one of the most widely disseminated multi-media entertainment franchises. This achieved a degree of intergenerational cultural dissemination that far surpasses his comic book fandom. Yet despite an unprecedented degree of adaptation into other media from radio, newspaper strips, film serials, animation, feature films, video games and television, Superman’s ongoing comic books have remained in unbroken publication, developing a long and complex history of narrative renewal and reinvention. This thesis investigates the multifaceted intertextuality between the comic book portrayals of Superman and its many adaptations over the years, including how such retellings in other media have a generally stronger cultural impact, which exerts in turn an adaptive influence upon these continuing comics’ internalised narrative continuity. I shall argue that Superman comics, as a case study for the wider phenomenon in the superhero genre, demonstrate via their frequent revisions and relaunches of continuity, a process of deeply palimpsestuous self-adaptation. The Introduction positions my research methodology in relation to intertextual theory, with an emphasis on providing terminological clarity, while Chapter 1 expands into a literature review on pertinent key scholarship on adaptation studies and the comics studies field specifically.
