ATLAS’s new minesweeping contract TLAS ELEKTRONIK UK Ltd have been awarded the first phase, worth £13M, of a £28M contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to supply an Autonomous AMinesweeping Capability to the Royal Navy (RN). These Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) will create underwater influences to detonate mines in a controlled manner. The contract will be executed over the next five years, and is built on the ARCIMS Mission System, fitted with the latest generation of minesweeping payloads. The system will include the autonomous “Sense & Avoid” capability to enable safe operations at sea. The major benefit of the unmanned sweeping systems is that it can safely clear sea lanes from mines, therefore removing the man from the minefield. The ARCIMS mission system, based on a specially designed 11 metre vessel, can be transported easily by road, rail or military aircraft. It can be operated from shore with the minimum of support, or launched and recovered from an RN Hunt Class Mine Countermeasure Vessel (MCMV). ATLAS ELEKTRONIK have partnered with Babcock, who will provide the equipment handling, launch and recovery systems as well as the requisite structural design, platform system integration and support to the operational safety case. The system will be integrated by BAE Systems within their Nautis command system that is installed on all Royal Navy MCMVs. Philip Dunne MP, Minister of State for Defence Procurement said, “This contract is an important step forward in enhancing the Royal Navy’s ability to defeat sea mines whilst reducing risks to our service personnel. [...] This sophisticated equipment with a range of capabilities will enable our Armed Forces to undertake consistently effective operations and mine clearance in challenging environments.”

The LSB has specially developed military components to allow for quick construction, with highly adjustable variable slope ramps, ground beam assemblies and heavier transverse beam sections to handle the heaviest military loads. It is primarily used on main supply routes to replace damaged bridges and support the infrastructure. New stealth vessel uliet Marine Systems (JMS) will be launching their revolutionary new vessel, GHOST, to the international market at DSEI 2015. GHOST is a combination of Jstealth fighter aircraft and attack helicopter technologies packaged in a marine platform, and it is designed to provide a surface and subsurface platform for tracking and identifying multiple targets. JMS has solved the technical challenge of controlling small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) vessels at high speed, and the vessel also employs active drag reduction technology to increase speed. GHOSTs can be used to create a fleet perimeter, providing sensor and weapon platforms, allowing no surface or subsurface intrusions. The same capabilities that have made helicopters valuable to get to hard-to-reach locations fast apply to GHOST in the maritime environment. Supply runs can be made two to three times faster than craft currently in use, with fewer weather restrictions than helicopter usage. Bright thinking Major breaks marathon record from Nitecore Major Iain Church has broken the world record time for completing a marathon wearing a bomb disposal suit The suit was supplied by Morgan Advanced Materials. Designed with cutting-edge materials technology and garment engineering, the suit was similar to those currently in service with the MOD, and is worn to give the highest levels of protection in the event of a blast whilst retaining maximum comfort and mobility for the user. Including the helmet, the suit weighed 30kg (66lbs). Major Church’s body temperature was measured by an internal thermometer that was swallowed before the event, with a team on hand to co-ordinate the speedy removal of the suit and the application of ice packs if necessary; fortunately, emergency cooling procedures were only required once, at mile 23. The record attempt was successful, registering a time of six hours, 28 minutes and six seconds. Major Church said, “I’m absolutely over the moon that we were able to beat the previous world record by more than 27 minutes. A special thanks to my team, and to Morgan Advanced Materials for designing such an impressive piece of kit, without which none of this would have been possible.” The challenge was raising money for The Royal British Legion. Nitecore will be exhibiting their new P20 Flashlight at DSEI 2015. This compact model, weighing just over 100g has an anti-rolling design in a solid tube of aero-grade aluminium alloy with HAIII hard-anodized finish, and toughened ultra-clear mineral glass with anti-scratch coating. It can be operated one-handed, even when wearing gloves, with a strobe-ready mode that can be accessed in any state. There are three different operational modes: tactical, law enforcement and general, which can quickly accessed depending on the situation. The P20 utilises the Cree XM-L2 (T6) LED, with a maximum output of 800 lumens (and a burn time up to 50,000 hours), a peak beam intensity of 11,100cd and a throw distance of up to 210 metres.
