    SHCPS Summer Reading 2011 This spring, SHCPS staff, families and community members all pitched in to clear the land across the street from the school on Eastern Avenue. Over the summer, the work will continue (Contact Christopher Young at [email protected] to help out!) so, upon our return to school in August, we can proudly unveil our Community Garden! In the spirit of this event, all classes will partake in a series of garden related projects that span across all content areas. To prepare, all Junior Academy students should read Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. This beautiful book, which has won the Buckeye Children’s Book Award and has been named a “Best Book” by the Young Adults Library, School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly, tells the stories of twelve characters who come together through the founding of a neighborhood garden in Cleveland, IL. It is a “hymn to a sense of community.” Please be aware that some of the characters in the book explore some sensitive topics. Parents, if you are uncomfortable with any of the issues this book touches upon, please allow your child to choose an alternative book from the list below, or another book of substance that focuses on gardens or other environmental endeavors. Better yet, read the book alongside your child so that you can serve as a mature sounding board as your child ponders the messages of the story. Enjoy!     Steve Winwood – de tidlige år (indtil 1963) Oplæg udarbejdet af Flemming Vestergard – Steve Winwood er født i 1948 og voksede op i Birmingham. Hans far var semiprof. musiker og spillede tenorsaxofon og klarinet i et swing-jazz orkester – Hans bror Mervin, kaldet Muff, var 5 år ældre. Han spillede guitar og klaver fra tidlig alder. Steve og han sang i kirkekor. Steve spillede også fra tidlig alder guitar, klaver og trommer – Begge brødre interesserede sig også for jazz. Muff starter et 8-mands jazzorkester som Steve deltager i. – Efterhånden koncentrerer Steve sig om sang og klaver samt orgel. Han begynder at spille med mange forskellige musikere i Birmingham området, samt sammen med gæstende musikere (f.eks Muddy Waters). Han er meget inspireret af Ray Charles. Spencer Davis Group (1963 – 67) – Dannet 1963 af waliseren Spencer Davis (f. 1939). Han mødte Steve og Muff en aften de spillede med deres jazz-orkester. Davis var meget interesseret i soul, blues, jazz og R'n'B. – Davis (sang, guit,mundharm), Muff (bas), Steve (orgel, sang). Peter Yorke (trom) – Repertoiret var fra start især covers fra Motown og blues og R'n'B -standards, men Winwood skrev også numre til gruppen allerede fra starten – Spillede lokalt de første år. Fik pladekontrakt i 1964 og udgav singlen 'Dimples' – Med deres 2. plade fik de deres helt egen stil og hittede med Keep on Runnin'. Senere var det numre som 'Gimme some lovin' og 'I'm a Man' der solgte stort – Steve og Muff forlader Spencer Davis Group i 1967. Muff bliver pladeproducer. Gruppen fortsætter nogle år med ny besætning.

Space, I contend, is something that we do or that other people or even things do. The argument that I hold is that we create spaces as we cope with the world that we live in. Our act of ‘coping’ is a spatial act, a mode of comportment through which we lay out what we want or do not want to do with and in the world. Space is but another mode of expressing agency, another way to bestow, obtain or elicit meanings from the world.
