(The festival's original title was Festival of Fantastic Cinema.) The more mainstream section (called Gran Angular ) showed 12 films only as opposed to the large offering of 27 films in the Fantastic section, evidence that this genre still predominates even though it is no longer exclusive. Japan made a big showing this year in both categories. Two feature-length animated films caught the attention of Sara Martin , an English literature teacher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and anime fan, who reports here on the latest offerings by two of Japan's most outstanding anime film makers, and gives us both a wee history and future glimpse of the anime genre - it's sure not kids' stuff and it's not always pretty. Japanese animated feature films are known as anime. This should not be confused with manga , the name given to the popular printed comics on which anime films are often based. Western spectators raised in a culture that identifies animation with cartoon films and TV series made predominately for children, may be surprised to learn that animation enjoys a far higher regard in Japan.

C h a p t e r 1 F ROM F AN TO P ROFESSIONAL In 1958, at the age of 17, Hayao Miyazaki saw the fi lm that changed his life. It was the fi lm that led him to a career in animation, a career that would make him Japan’s (and one of the world’s) most acclaimed and infl uential animators, known as the director of such classics as My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and the Academy Award winner Spirited Away (2001), as well as a source of inspiration for leading animation studios all over the world, such as the American studio Pixar and the British studio Aardman, among many others. Th e fi lm that set Miyazaki on this path was Hakujaden (literally translated as Legend of the White Serpent and later distributed in English- speaking territories under the title Panda and the Magic Serpent ). Miyazaki was not, by any means, the only spectator on whom Panda and the Magic Serpent has left such a deep impression.

  • Race and Identity in the Manga of Tezuka Osamu
DRAWING THE SELF: RACE AND IDENTITY IN THE MANGA OF TEZUKA OSAMU by Benjamin Evan Whaley B.A.H., Stanford University, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July 2012 © Benjamin Evan Whaley, 2012 ABSTRACT This thesis explores the construction and mutability of the Japanese race and ethnicity in the print comics of Dr. Tezuka Osamu (1928–1989), Japan’s “god of manga” and the creator of such beloved series as Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. By investigating three of Tezuka’s mature, lesser-known works from the 1970s and 80s, I will illustrate how Tezuka’s narratives have been shaped by his consciousness of racial issues and his desire to investigate the changing nature of Japanese identity in the postwar era. First, the works are contextualized within the larger manga history of the 1960s and 70s, specifically the gekiga (lit. drama pictures) movement that heralded more mature and sophisticated stories and artwork. Chapter one analyzes Ode to Kirihito (1970–71, 2006 English), and introduces Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection to show the ways in which Tezuka bestializes his ethnically Japanese protagonists and turns them into a distinct class of subaltern. Chapter two examines intersections between race and war narratives using Adolf (1983–85, 1995–96 English), Tezuka’s WWII epic about the Jewish Holocaust. The concept of hybridity is utilized and the case is made that Tezuka ultimately denies his racially mixed characters the benefits of their Japanese identity.

  • “Cults” and Comic Religion Manga After Aum
Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 39/1: 127–151 © 2012 Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture Jolyon Baraka Thomas Horrific “Cults” and Comic Religion Manga after Aum After the 1995 Aum Shinrikyōオウム真理教 sarin gas attacks, influential com- mentators suggested that enthralling apocalyptic narratives characteristic of manga (illustrated serial novels) made Aum members prone to extremism and violence. This article inverts this interpretation, showing that popular manga published after 1995 have exhibited—and reflected—morbid fascina- tion with the sensational fodder provided by the Aum incident itself. Early manga responses advanced variations on a horrific “evil cult” trope in which marginal religions modeled on Aum were graphically depicted as hotbeds of sexual depravity, fraud, and violence. Over time, equally chilling—if less sensational—psychological thrillers appeared that interrogated the aspects of human nature that allow for “cult-like” behavior. Finally, one very recent manga has sublimated the formerly popular “evil cult” trope by divorcing “religion” from “cults” and rehabilitating the former through mildly irreverent comedy. keywords: Aum Shinrikyō—manga—“evil cult” trope—Believers—Death Note— Saint Young Men—Twentieth Century Boys Jolyon Baraka Thomas is a PhD candidate in religion at Princeton University. 127 n the immediate aftermath of the 1995 subway gas attacks, a number of theories proliferated about Aum Shinrikyō’s オウム真理教 attractiveness to its generally youthful and intelligent members. Such theories included Ispeculation about the pernicious effects of popular media, claims of a general weakening of social mores among Japan’s youth, and—less frequently but sig- nificantly—cautious acknowledgment of Aum’s allure (Morioka 1996; Ōsawa 1996; Miyadai 1998; Metraux 1999).
