Nineteen species are recorded for the first time for Russia: Abrothallus chrysanthus J.Steiner, Abrothallus microspermus Tul., Caloplaca albopruinosa (Arnold) H.Olivier, Candelariella plumbea Poelt & Vězda, Candelariella rhodax Poelt & Vězda, Cladonia firma (Nyl.) Nyl., Halospora deminuta (Arnold) Tomas. & Cif., Halospora discrepans (J.Lahm ex Arnold) Hafellner, Lichenostigma epipolina Nav.-Ros., Calat. & Hafellner, Milospium graphideorum (Nyl.) D.Hawksw., Mycomicrothelia atlantica D.Hawksw. & Coppins, Parabagliettoa cyanea (A.Massal.) Gueidan & Cl.Roux, Placynthium garovaglioi (A.Massal.) Malme, Polyblastia dermatodes A.Massal., Rusavskia digitata (S.Y.Kondr.) S.Y.Kondr. & Kärnefelt, Squamarina stella-petraea Poelt, Staurothele elenkinii Oxner, Toninia nordlandica Th.Fr., and Verrucaria endocarpoides Servít. AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Robert J. Smith for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Botany and Plant Pathology presented on May 1, 2017. Title: Realized and Potential Climate Responses of Lichen and Bryophyte Communities in a National Forest Inventory Abstract approved: Bruce McCune Climate and terrestrial vegetation have had mutual feedbacks for nearly five hundred million years, yet both are now departing from recent historical norms, with uncertain implications for forest ecosystems. This dissertation outlines the current and potential future climate responses of lichen and bryophyte communities in the United States as part of a national forest inventory. The first task was to identify influences on carbon and nitrogen storage of moss and lichen “ground layers” in subarctic interior Alaska. Nutrient stores were more sensitive to local vegetation and topography than regional macroclimate. Nutrients and biomass were greatest among apparently less-disturbed stands. This suggests that climatic changes could diminish ground layer nutrient storage indirectly if they promote intensifying wildfire regimes or expansions of competitive vascular vegetation. Turning to focus on species diversity, the next task was to quantify the strength of relationship between epiphytic lichen community composition and macroclimate across the 4,000 km-long swath of the U.S. Pacific coastal states. The strongest fitting lichen response gradients involved precipitation, temperature, and a heat-moisture index. Lichen indicator species (diagnostic of ten defined climate zones) emerged as useful monitoring tools because their abundance changes could signal shifting climate zone boundaries. After establishing key present-day climatic relationships, the next task was to pinpoint nationwide locations where epiphytic lichen communities will be most vulnerable to species losses under current and future warming scenarios. -

Lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi new to Kazakhstan. – Herzogia 26: 103 –116. Although there is a published lichen flora of Kazakhstan, the diversity of lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi of this country is incompletely known. Here we publish records of 41 species of lichens and 2 species of lichenicolous fungi for the first time from Kazakhstan. All collections are from the Kazakh Altai and the Saur Mountains, East Kazakhstan. Caloplaca monacensis, Immersaria iranica, Lepraria elobata, L. rigidula and Parmelina pastillifera are new for the wider surroundings of Kazakhstan, as they have neither been found in Central Asia so far, nor in southern Siberia. Several species are new to Central Asia, but were already known from the nearby Siberia. Zusammenfassung: Hauck, M., Tønsberg, T., Mayrhofer, H. & Breuss, O. 2013. Obwohl es eine publizierte Flechtenflora von Kasachstan gibt, ist die Diversität der Flechten bildenden und bewoh- nenden Pilze dieses Landes unvollständig bekannt. Hier veröffentlichen wir Neunachweise von 41 Flechtenarten und 2 Arten Flechten bewohnender Pilze für Kasachstan. Alle Aufsammlungen stammen vom Kasachischen Altai und dem Saur-Gebirge in Ostkasachstan. Caloplaca monacensis, Immersaria iranica, Lepraria elobata, L. rigidula and Parmelina pastillifera sind neu für die weitere Umgebung Kasachstans, da sie bisher weder in Zentralasien noch in Südsibirien gefunden wurden. Mehrere Arten sind neu für Zentralasien, waren aber bereits aus dem nahen Sibirien bekannt. -

ÖZET Bu çalıĢmada, Marmara Bölgesi’nde yayılıĢ gösteren Fagus ve Quercus taksonları üzerindeki epifitik liken çeĢitliliğinin belirlenmesi ve liken türlerinin substrat tercihlerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıĢtır. 15.05.2005 - 06.07.2008 tarihleri arasında Marmara Bölgesi’nde Fagus ve Quercus cinslerine ait taksonların bulunduğu 238 farklı lokaliteden, 4219 adet örnek toplanmıĢtır. Toplanan örneklerin değerlendirilmesi ile 67 cinse ait 186 liken ve 2 likenikol mantar taksonu belirlenmiĢtir. Tespit edilen taksonlardan, 8’i Türkiye için yeni kayıttır.
