M u z y k a l i a XIII · Judaica 4 The Polish Pianist Artur Hermelin H a n n a P a l m o n Introduction For many years, I knew about my late relative - the pianist Artur Hermelin - only this: that he grew up in Lwow (called Lemberg when he was born there in 1901); that he was a child prodigy; and that as a piano soloist he toured Europe with orchestras and gave recitals - some of which were broadcasted by the Polish Radio. I also knew that Artur perished in the Holocaust. When my father told me that, his eyes revealed how much he was still missing his cousin Artur, who had been one year older than him; that was 30 years after Artur’s tragic death, when I was still a child; it was far beyond my grasp, and it still is. We had an old small photo of Artur as a very young boy, hugging a big accordion and giving the camera a warm smile. During my recent attempts to collect details about Artur’s 41 years of life – I’ve read that Artur was among the musicians who were forced to perform music for the Nazis in the ghetto of Lwow and later in the labor camp; hundreds of thousands of Jews - Artur and his relatives among them - were murdered at the ghetto of Lwow and at its notorious Janowska camp, or transported from the ghetto or the camp to concentration camps, in the years 1941-1943. May the memory of the victims be blessed. -

A 2017 Guide FEATURE ARTICLE Training Opera’s Next Generation A Tale of Two Festivals April 2017 Festivals Editor’s Note In our largest and most varied Guide to Summer Festivals yet, we focus on a common thread: training the next generation of performers and the artistic personnel who support them. At many festivals, young artists receive private lessons, coaching sessions, master classes, or all of the above during the day. By night they are either performing, observing the seasoned pros who train them by day, or a combination of the two. But honing or developing the skills of tomorrow’s generation of musicians is only part of the equation. It’s summertime, after all, and while the living may not exactly be “easy,” it’s certainly a lot more relaxed than during the season or school year. Consider the difference between waiting in the green-room line post-concert A 2017 Guide to shake the maestro’s hand vs. running into him in the festival cafeteria line, or at the local pub after the concert, or on a morning jog. Such is the kind of cross-fertilization for which festivals are known, and one of the reasons they are such ideal settings for rising artists. Sometimes the trainees are fully integrated into the schedule, such as at the Santa Fe Opera, where young artists are featured, often in leading roles. Sometimes they work independently of the main event, such as at Tanglewood, where the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, for instance, is comprised entirely of TMC Fellows and plays its own concerts, alongside the center-stage Boston Symphony Orchestra (whose members form much of the faculty). -

Program Featuring Marina Piccinini, Flute Hailed by Gramophone 2014 as “the Heifetz of the flute,” flutist Marina Piccinini Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) is recognized as one of the world’s leading flute virtuosos. The first flutist to win the Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 Avery Fisher Career Award, she combines flawless technical command, profound Moderato interpretive instincts, and a charismatic stage presence. In January and February Scherzo 2016, she performed the World Premiere of the Aaron Jay Kernis Flute Concerto Andante written for her, with Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Allegro con brio Ward Stare and the Rochester Philharmonic. Marina enjoys an international career as soloist with major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, the London Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, the National Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Or- Pierre Boulez (1925 - 2016) chestra, Montreal Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Rotterdam Philhar- Sonatine for Flute and Piano monic. A graduate of The Juilliard School, her mentors include Julius Baker, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Aurèle Nicolet. She is Professor of Flute at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University and the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Intermission in Hannover, Germany, and frequently gives Master Classes around the world. Marc-André Dalbavie (1961 - ) Andreas Haefliger, Piano Nocturne (written for Marina Piccinini and Andreas Haefliger Andreas Haefliger, with his formidable technique and musicality, and his innate as a Wedding Anniversary gift, 2012) sense of architecture and phrasing, is widely recognized as a pianist of the first rank. MARINA PICCININI flutist 2017-18 Biography A daring artist with diverse musical interests, virtuoso flutist Marina Piccinini is in demand worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist. Internationally acclaimed for her interpretive skills, rich, expansive colors, technical command and elegant, compelling stage presence, Ms. Piccinini has been hailed by Gramophone as “the Heifetz of the flute”. Well-known for her commitment to new music and her history of first performances and commissions by some of today’s foremost living composers, as well as performances with esteemed orchestras worldwide, Ms. Piccinini’s recent performances of note include engagements throughout the United States, Canada, Korea, Europe and Great Britain. Of special note were the premiere performances of Pulitzer Prize–winner Aaron Jay Kernis’ Flute Concerto, written for her, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under principal guest conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Leonard Slatkin, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under Music Director Ward Stare, and with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra under conductor JoAnn Falletta. The recording of the concerto will be released by Naxos label in the Fall of 2017.
