American Name Society 51st Annual Ehrensperger Report 2005 A Publication of the American Name Society Michael F. McGoff, Editor PREFACE After a year’s hiatus the Ehrensperger Report returns to its place as a major publication of the American Name Society (ANS). This document marks the 51st year since its introduction to the membership by Edward C. Ehrensperger. For over twenty-five years, from 1955 to 1982, he compiled and published this annual review of scholarship. Edward C. Ehrensperger 1895-1984 As usual, it is a partial view of the research and other activity going on in the world of onomastics, or name study. In a report of this kind, the editor must make use of what comes in, often resulting in unevenness. Some of the entries are very short; some extensive, especially from those who are reporting not just for themselves but also for the activity of a group of people. In all cases, I have assumed the prerogative of an editor and have abridged, clarified, and changed the voice of many of the submissions. I have encouraged the submission of reports by email or electronically, since it is much more efficient to edit text already typed than to type the text myself. For those not using email, I strongly encourage sending me written copy. There is some danger, however, in depending on electronic copy: sometimes diacritical marks or other formatting matters may not have come through correctly. In keeping with the spirit of onomastics and the original Ehrensperger Report, I have attempted where possible to report on research and publication under a person’s name. -

René Galand, the Emsav in a Novel of Yeun Ar Gow
René Galand, The Emsav in a novel of Yeun ar Gow Brittany’s struggle to regain its liberties (the Emsav , in Breton), is a major theme in XXth century Breton literature, as I have had occasion to show in other publications.1 The links between the Emsav and literature can be quite complex: this has been clearly demonstrated notably by Pierrette Kermoal in her study of two works of Roparz Hemon, the poem Gwarizi vras Emer [Emer’s great jealousy] and the novel Mari Vorgan .2 She shows how the Breton nationalist ideal is manifested in the form of two beautiful women whose essence is supernatural, the fairy Fant in the poem, and the mermaid Levenez in dthe novel. P. Kermoal does not mention Donalda Kerlaban, the protagonist of Hemon’s utopian novel An Aotrou Bimbochet e Breizh , but she clearly is another manifestation of the author’s ideal, an incarnation of his country’s revival. Roparz Hemon makes use of the image of a supernatural woman (or of a woman situated outside of time) like the ancient Irish poets who used her as a symbol of Irish sovereignty. 3 In fact, what the critic Youenn Olier wrote about Roparz Hemon might well be applied to many other Breton writers, à l’instar des anciens poètes irlandais qui symbolisaient ainsi la royauté de leur pays. 4 A vrai dire, on pourrait appliquer à bon nombre d’écrivains bretons ce qu’écrivait Youenn Olier à propos de Roparz Hemon :"... e oberenn lennegel a zo bet heklev an Emsav dre vras" [His literary work has largely been an echo of the Emsav ]. -

Devotion and Development: ∗ Religiosity, Education, and Economic Progress in 19th-Century France Mara P. Squicciarini Bocconi University Abstract This paper uses a historical setting to study when religion can be a barrier to the diffusion of knowledge and economic development, and through which mechanism. I focus on 19th-century Catholicism and analyze a crucial phase of modern economic growth, the Second Industrial Revolution (1870-1914) in France. In this period, technology became skill-intensive, leading to the introduction of technical education in primary schools. At the same time, the Catholic Church was promoting a particularly anti-scientific program and opposed the adoption of a technical curriculum. Using data collected from primary and secondary sources, I exploit preexisting variation in the intensity of Catholicism (i.e., religiosity) among French districts. I show that, despite a stable spatial distribution of religiosity over time, the more religious districts had lower economic development only during the Second Industrial Revolution, but not before. Schooling appears to be the key mechanism: more religious areas saw a slower introduction of the technical curriculum and instead a push for religious education. Religious education, in turn, was negatively associated with industrial development about 10-15 years later, when school-aged children would enter the labor market, and this negative relationship was more pronounced in skill-intensive industrial sectors.
