LABORLABOR NEWSNEWS OctoberOctober 2008 2012 PREMIER’S MESSAGE An Abbott Federal Government would be a disaster for Tasmania. It’s difficult to overstate the damage that the federal Opposition leader’s policies would do to the Tasmanian economy and government services if he is ever elected Prime Minister. The single biggest threat is the Liberal Party’s stance on the distribution of GST revenue. Mainland Liberal Premiers are united in pushing for a per capita distribution of GST revenue, which would strip up to $700 million per annum from Tasmania’s budget. That’s the equivalent of $5000 for every Tasmanian household. Mr Abbott has consistently expressed sympathy and support for his Liberal colleague’s campaign. His claims that such an approach would not disadvantage Tasmania are laughable. Liberal Premiers are pursuing a change in the way GST revenue is distributed because they PREMIER LARA GIDDINGS want to get their hands on more of it. With a finite amount of cash available, giving more to WA, Victoria, Queensland and NSW must mean there’s less available for the smaller States. The impact on public services in Tasmania of a further massive reduction in GST revenue would be devastating. But the potential damage to Tasmania of an Abbott government does not end there. Mr Abbott’s pledge to repeal the price on carbon would strip a further $70 million per annum from Tasmania, as we benefit financially from our strong advantage in renewable energy. He has also pledged to abandon the NBN, which would cost Tasmania 800 jobs in the roll-out phase and jeopardise our place in the new digital economy. As Premier I’ll keep doing all I can to let Tasmanians know just how bad for the State an Abbott government would be. On a more positive note, the recent passage of legislation on marriage equality through the House of Assembly was a victory for Labor values of fairness and equality. The Bill was passed just four weeks after the policy was endorsed at Labor’s State Conference in August. Marriage equality is just one of a number of progressive social policy issues that the State Labor Government will be pursuing in the coming months. We will also seek to implement Labor values in areas such as surrogacy, sex industry reform, Aboriginal reconciliation, and an apology to victims of forced adoptions. Craig Lee State Returning Officer FEDERAL REPORT The Federal Labor Government has been working hard to implement its ambitious long term reform agenda. In response to the Gonski School funding review Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced a new way of funding schools that will guarantee them more money and give principals more power to hire staff and control their own budget. The reforms will also provide a greater focus on providing funding for disadvantaged students, students with disability and for schools in regional, rural and remote areas. These changes are to make sure all students have the chance to reach their full potential to ensure that our children get the high skilled, high wage jobs of the future. Tasmanians can also look forward to the benefits of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) after it was announced the State had been chosen as one of the launch sites. The NDIS is due to launch from 1 July next year benefiting around 1,000 Tasmanians living with a disability aged between 15 and 24. An NDIS will give Tasmanians with a disability more control over their lives by giving them better support and allowing them to choose the services which best suit their needs. We have also announced our landmark $4 billion dental health care package. This will provide more than 3 million children and millions of adults on low incomes or in rural areas access to government subsidised dental care. This package will allow millions of Australians who would have otherwise not received dental care an opportunity to see a dentist and obtain the care they need. Finally, we expect the Government’s response to the GST Review in the coming months. Whilst we were pleased to have Treasurer Wayne Swan committing to the principles of the current system at our State Labor Conference, it is concerning that State Liberal Premiers across the country are continuing to campaign for a new per-capita system. Even worse, Tony Abbott appears to be supporting them. Labor will always support the right of Australians across the country to receive an equitable level of service, no matter where they live. If the Liberals have their way that important right will be jeopardised as the Tasmanian budget could suffer by over $600 million each and every year. Julie Collins MP Minister for Community Services Minister for the Status of Women Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Firstly I would like to thank all the rank and file members who supported me to become President of the ALP Tasmanian Branch. It is a tremendous honour and I hope I am able to repay your support over my two year term. Since being elected as President I have attended numerous branch meetings to listen to members suggestions about how they would like to see the party progress into the future. There are many ideas about how we can better organise and communicate and I see a growing enthusiasm in the party to work together to do this.
