The growing fishery for cleaner- wrasse has actuated the need for more knowledge about labrid ecology. In this study the occurrence and abundance of three common cleaner-wrasse species on the Norwegian West coast was analysed in relation to spatial and environmental variables at 20 shallow water study sites in Masfjord. Analyses were based on catch data of goldsinny (Ctenolabrus rupestris L.), rock cook (Centrolabrus exoletus L.) and corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops L.), ob- tained from the Masfjord ‘cod enhancement project’ sampling programme. Data were used from monthly sampling by beach seine on 10 of the study sites (299 stations in total) and by a net group consisting of a 39 mm meshed gillnet and a 45 mm meshed trammel-net at all 20 sites (360 stations in total), July 1986- August 1990. The habitat-related variables substratum type, substratum angle, dominating macrophytic vegetation, and degree of algal cover at each study site were recorded by scuba.

A faster rate of reproductive gain with body size can occur if larger males are more effective in controlling females and excluding competitors from fertilizations. The most simple consequence of this theoretical scenario, based on sexual allocation theory, is that natural breeding sex ratios are expected to be female biased in female-first sex changers, because average male fecundity will exceed that of females. A second prediction is that the intensity of sperm competition is expected to be lower in female-first sex-changing species because larger males should be able to more completely monopolize females and therefore reduce male–male competition during spawning.

    Annual Report 2014 This report summarises Seasearch activities throughout Britain and Ireland in 2014. It includes a summary of the main surveys undertaken (pages 1-4), reports produced and a summary of the data collected. This includes records of Priority habitats and species, locally important features and nationally scarce and rare species (pages 4-6) and habitats (pages 7-8). It also includes a summary of the training courses run for volunteer divers (page 9) and information on how Seasearch is organised and the data is managed and made available (page 10). All of the reports referred to may be downloaded from the Seasearch website and the species data may be accessed through the National Biodiversity Network website. More detailed datasets are available on request. Seasearch Surveys 2014 The effects of the winter storms lingered throughout the summer in some areas and limited the number of surveys undertaken. Despite this the number of Survey Forms, which provide the most information, was maintained and exceeded the number of Observation Forms for the first time. IV. 2007 Annotated checklist of fish and lamprey species (Gnathostomata and Petromyzontomorphi) of Turkey, including a Red List of threatened and declining species RONALD FRICKE, MURAT BILECENOGLU & HASAN MUSA SARI Abstract An annotated checklist of fish and lamprey species of Turkey comprises a total of 694 species in 155 families (including 45 species which are not native). 248 species (plus 13 intro- duced) occur in fresh water; the largest freshwater fish families are the Cyprinidae, Balitori- dae and Cobitidae. 279 species (plus eight introduced) live in transitional waters. In marine habitats, 434 species (plus 46 immigrated or introduced) are found, with the Gobiidae and Sparidae being the largest families. While there is no marine endemic faunal element in Turkey, and only three species endemic to transitional waters, the freshwater fish fauna com- prises a total of 78 endemic species (31.5 % of the total native species). 23 endemic fish species are found in the central lakes (including seven in Beyșehir Gölü, six in Eg˘irdir Gölü), 12 each in Anatolian Aegean Sea watersheds (most in Büyük Menderes River) and in Anatolian Black sea watersheds, 11 in the upper reaches of the Persian/Arabian Gulf watersheds, nine in the Anatolian Mediterranean Sea watersheds, eight in western Anatolian lake watersheds, and seven in the Asi Nehri/Orontes. Apterichtus caecus (Linnaeus, 1758), Chromogobius zebratus (Kolombatovic´, 1891), Gobius fallax Sarato, 1889, Nemacheilus insignis (Heckel, 1843), Opeatogenys gracilis (Canestrini, 1864) and Pomatoschistus quagga (Heckel, 1837) are recorded from Turkish waters for the first time.

Online databases allow scientist from all over the world to instantly share their results with the whole scientific community. One such database is fishBase (Froese & Pauly, Editors 2014), where people from all over the world collect pictures and basic data on all the world's fish species. The amount of readily available data allows for exploratory and comparative studies to be conducted without individual data collection but by putting the pre-existing data under the filter of new questions. This study uses fishBase and the Swedish Nationalnyckeln, (Kullander, Nyman, Jilg & Delling, 2012) to explore the relationship of conspicuous and cryptic colouration of skin and eyes to reproduction strategy, structural and colour complexity of the habitat and depth preference in Swedish marine and brackish teleosts. There have been many studies in the past exploring the function of contrasting skin colouration, and have found it to, be a faithful conveyor of fitness. This is however, to our knowledge, the first exploratory study on a species level, and also the first to consider eye colouration as a possible important variable.
