  • Black Sticks Named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart
21 September, 2011 Media release Black Sticks named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart The Black Sticks national coaches have named their teams for the 2011 Oceania Olympic Qualifier to be played in Hobart from 6-9 October, 2011. The Oceania region has two Olympic allocations courtesy of world rankings for both men and women and with Fiji having pulled out it gives Australia and New Zealand automatic qualification to the London Olympics. The qualifier will now be a three test series between the two rival teams. The national coaches say the qualifier will be more about getting further test experience against Australia and gaining valuable world ranking points. Black Sticks Women’s coach Mark Hager has named an experienced team, selecting the same 18 players who beat Australia in pool play and went on to win bronze at the 2011 Champions Trophy in July in Amsterdam. “This will be a hard fought series against a top team - there is so much rivalry between these two sides. With us ranked sixth and Australia ranked seventh, we will need to win the series in order to hold our position,” says Hager. Black Sticks Men’s coach Shane McLeod has chosen a very experienced men’s team with players like Phil Burrows, Blair Hopping and Dean Couzins – all who rack up a total 730 test caps. This will be the opportunity to take on world champions Australia, which will be invaluable in their build up to the Champions Trophy being held at North Harbour in early December. “This Olympic qualifier forms a key component of our preparation towards Champions Trophy and will allow us to test our game against a world champion, gold medal team.

  • Media Release Black Sticks Women Take on Argentina
MEDIA RELEASE BLACK STICKS WOMEN TAKE ON ARGENTINA Thursday, 18 March 2010 A youthful Black Sticks Women’s team is set to face the experienced Argentinean team later this month. Ranked as the number two team in the world, the Argentinean women’s team – aptly named Las Leonas (The Lionesses) – will bring its fast, attacking style to New Zealand for a three test series against New Zealand. The three test series is being played in Hamilton (March 31) and Tauranga (April 2 and 3). Black Sticks Women’s Coach, Mark Hager, says the opportunity to play against such a high calibre team is crucial for the women’s build up this year. “With the women’s World Cup, Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games all in the latter part of this year, this series will give the team another chance to put their skills to the test on the international stage.” Hager has picked a young team of 20 players from his squad. The more experienced Black Sticks players such as Kayla Sharland, Emily Naylor and Krystal Forgesson are currently overseas, along with Katie Glynn, and were not available for this series. “Our focus is on the long game. The team has a huge year of hockey in front of them, and every game which builds our international exposure helps towards this.” For further information please contact: Val Hayes Acting Communications Manager Hockey New Zealand +64 27 291 2873 Team lists for Hamilton and Tauranga games respectively, on following pages. • Black Sticks Women's Team Announced for Champions Trophy
Media release 23 April 2011 Black Sticks Women’s team announced for Champions Trophy Black Sticks Women’s coach Mark Hager has announced the 18 players that will take on the world’s best teams at the Champions Trophy in Amsterdam in June. The Champions Trophy (25 June – 3 July) is the pinnacle event in the 2011 international hockey calendar and the 13 home test series against Korea, Japan and Argentina this year, have given Hager the chance to trial and select the best players. “We have had some strong test series over the last few months, but the level of competition at Champions Trophy will be world class and if we want to place in the top six, we need to be playing at our very best,” says Hager. Sophie Devine, Cathryn Finlayson, Alana Millington, Sally Rutherford and Anna Thorpe – who have not played at a Champions Trophy before – will join the team alongside highly capped players Emily Naylor, Kayla Sharland, Krystal Forgesson and Clarissa Eshuis. “The training and competition over the last few months has been pretty intense, and we need to keep training hard over the next couple of months to make sure we get the results we want. The motivation and drive from the team to perform is evident,” says co-captain Kayla Sharland. The Black Sticks have been named in Pool B alongside the Netherlands, Germany and Australia. Pool A includes Argentina, China, England and Korea. “If we can pull off two wins in the pool round, then that could possibly place us in the top four teams in the tournament.
