He attended the Christian Brothers School in Marino, and later worked in the family business, a grocers and licensed premises. His first brush with politics came in 1905 when, with his brother Phil and uncle P.J., he attended the first Sinn Féin convention in 1905. Serving as a Sinn Féin councillor on Dublin Corporation from 1909 until 1922, he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913, although he never joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. During the Easter 1916 Rising, Cosgrave served under Eamonn Ceannt at the South Dublin Union. His was not a minor role, and after the Rising he was sentenced to death. This was later commuted to penal servitude for life, and he was transported to Frongoch in Wales along with many other rebels. As public opinion began to favour the rebels, Cosgrave stood for election in the 1917 Kilkenny city by-election, and won despite being imprisoned. This was followed by another win the following year in Kilkenny North. Cosgrave took his seat in the First Dáil on his release from prison in 1919.

    The Ten Civic Families of Kilkenny By Mrs. J. C. J. Murphy T H E Ten Tribes or Civic Families of Kilkenny were the * descendants of the Knights who came over during the Anglo-Norman invasion, with one or two exceptions. In the course of time they became successful traders, professional men or landowners, and by their enterprise and industry in trade, their upright dealing and integrity, conspicuous charity and hospitality, made an honourable reputation far and near for the place of their adoption, and left to their descendants the maintenance of the high character which they had won as well as the care and exercise of the municipal offices and the rule of Govern­ ment of the Community whose interests they had done so much to advance and foster. The well-known couplet holds the names of these ten families: Archdekin, Archer, Cowley, Langton, Ley, Knaresborough, Lawless, Ragget, Rothe and Shee. Mr. John G. Prim says: “ The Cromwellian settlers or intruders found a colony like the thirteen Tribes of Galway in possession of the Municipal Offices and taking a leading part in the local trade and management of public affairs were this knot of ten families.” He also says that of a list of Chief Magistrates, 50 in number, who governed the town for a half-century prior to its capture by Cromwell, there were only two who did not bear some one of the ten family names of the Tribes of Kilkenny. It was the day of the Merchant Prince. I quote Mrs. C. J. Kenealy in her paper on Kilkenny Armorial Bear­ ings: “These families were for the most part very wealthy.

Tipperary is now available on www.duchas.ie. The Schools’ Collection, an important component of the National Folklore Collection, UCD, contains the folklore material recorded by pupils between 1937 and 1939. It consists of over half a million pages recorded by around 50,000 primary school pupils in the 26 counties. Material from the Schools’ Collection has been published on an ongoing basis on dúchas.ie since the end of 2013 and all volumes from the Collection, covering all 26 counties, will be available by the end of 2016. Folklore material from Dublin, Mayo, Donegal, Waterford, Galway, Leitrim, Kildare, Kerry, Sligo, Limerick, Monaghan, Laois, Kilkenny and Louth has already been made available on the site since the end of 2013. dúchas.ie is the result of a partnership, beginning in 2012, between the National Folklore Collection (UCD), Fiontar (DCU) and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The site will be of interest to a great many Irish people and to the Irish diaspora. For specialist researchers in the fields of folkloristics, local history, archaeology, genealogy, linguistics, and a range of other disciplines, dúchas.ie offers considerable research potential. The site can currently be searched by place or by person, and a search facility according to topic will be made available this year. Over 200 schools in Co. Tipperary took part in the scheme and 55 volumes of material were compiled. The Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Joe McHugh, TD, said, ‘This is yet another important step in this innovative project as material relating to traditional life in Ireland in years past will be made available to the general public.

Over a period of several years, I travelled to all parts of the country, north and south, recording English as used by the local population. Covering such a wide variety of places and people naturally meant getting to know my own fellow countrymen and countrywomen in a manner which had been hidden from me up to then. To those friends and relatives I talked to about the project, the events which took place and the stories of encounters seemed worth writing down and conveying to the general public. One thing that was brought home to me on my travels around Ireland is the great interest of the Irish public in all matters concerning language. So by combining stories of recording people with facts about the English language in Ireland, I thought I could provide an accessible introduction to this topic, spiced with anecdotes of what befell me when out and about with a tape recorder and microphone. Written by a linguist for non-linguists, this book is entirely non-technical and does not use special symbols or terms which only linguists are likely to know. There is, however, a short glossary at the end of the book in case anyone is interested in pursuing questions of language further. There are also tips for additional reading in case the subject of linguistics captures the imagination of any readers.

He attended the Christian Brothers School in Marino, and later worked in the family business, a grocers and licensed premises. His first brush with politics came in 1905 when, with his brother Phil and uncle P.J., he attended the first Sinn Féin convention in 1905. Serving as a Sinn Féin councillor on Dublin Corporation from 1909 until 1922, he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913, although he never joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. During the Easter 1916 Rising, Cosgrave served under Eamonn Ceannt at the South Dublin Union. His was not a minor role, and after the Rising he was sentenced to death. This was later commuted to penal servitude for life, and he was transported to Frongoch in Wales along with many other rebels. As public opinion began to favour the rebels, Cosgrave stood for election in the 1917 Kilkenny city by-election, and won despite being imprisoned. This was followed by another win the following year in Kilkenny North. Cosgrave took his seat in the First Dáil on his release from prison in 1919.
