ABSTRACT This thesis explores chapter II.ii of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (1939)—commonly called “The Night Lessons”—and its peculiar use of the conventions of the textbook as a form. In the midst of the Wake’s abstraction, Joyce uses the textbook to undertake a rigorous exploration of epistemology and education. By looking at the specific expectations of and ambitions for textbooks in 19th century Irish national schools, this thesis aims to provide a more specific historical context for what textbooks might mean as they appear in Finnegans Wake. As instruments of cultural conditioning, Irish textbooks were fraught with tension arising from their investment in shaping religious and political identity. -

ABSTRACT This thesis considers the imbrications created by James Joyce in his writing with the work of John Milton, through allusions, references and verbal echoes. These imbrications are analysed in light of the concept of ‘presence’, based on theories of intertextuality variously proposed by John Shawcross, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, and Eelco Runia. My analysis also deploys Gumbrecht’s concept of stimmung in order to explain how Joyce incorporates a Miltonic ‘atmosphere’ that pervades and enriches his characters and plot. By using a chronological approach, I show the subtlety of Milton’s presence in Joyce’s writing and Joyce’s strategy of weaving it into the ‘fabric’ of his works, from slight verbal echoes in Joyce’s early collection of poems, Chamber Music, to a culminating mass of Miltonic references and allusions in the multilingual Finnegans Wake. -

Papers on Joyce 16 (2010): 81-91 The Earliest Translations of Joyce’s Ulysses CARMELO MEDINA CASADO Abstract The article explores Joyce’s interest and active participation in the earliest translations of Ulysses into German, French, Spanish, Russian, Czech, Polish, Japanese, Danish, Italian, Hungarian and Portuguese, as documented in Sylvia Beach’s business letters, now part of the “James Joyce Collection” in the Poetry Collection at the University of the State of NY at Buffalo, and in the James Joyce-Paul Leon Papers at the National Library of Ireland, Dublin. Keywords: Ulysses, early translations, Sylvia Beach’s letters, James Joyce-Paul Leon Papers. ylvia Beach’s decision to publish Ulysses in her bookshop S“Shakespeare and Company” in 1922 came as a direct 1 consequence of the censorship pressure met by the novel. This pressure and its eventual ban, both in the United States and in 81 THE EARLIEST TRANSLATION OF JOYCE’S ULYSSES United Kingdom, did not quell the interest in the literary world to read Joyce’s Ulysses; furthermore it attracted the attention of people who wanted to read it in languages other than English and consequently of publishers and translators from different countries. The first legal ban of Ulysses took place in the United States in 1921, when it was still being periodically published in The Little Review; the ban was finally lifted by Judge John Woolsey’s resolution in 1933. In the United Kingdom, the ban and prosecution was personally carried out by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP); here too its distribution and publication was finally allowed in 1936, which was followed by the lifting of the ban in the rest of the English speaking world, where it had also been prohibited, except in 2 Ireland where Ulysses was not banned. -

In spite of their poverty, the family struggled to maintain a solid middle-class facade. A charming and odd little book with fantastic illustrations and typesetting and a strange story, very thought-provoking. James Joyce [] is best known for his experimental use of language and his exploration of new literary methods. James Joyce. I love the story behind this, about Joyce's relationship with his only grandson and the Trojan cat he sent him full of treats. Very similar to The Cat and the Devil , this is highly recommended! He attended the Christian Brothers School in Marino, and later worked in the family business, a grocers and licensed premises. His first brush with politics came in 1905 when, with his brother Phil and uncle P.J., he attended the first Sinn Féin convention in 1905. Serving as a Sinn Féin councillor on Dublin Corporation from 1909 until 1922, he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913, although he never joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. During the Easter 1916 Rising, Cosgrave served under Eamonn Ceannt at the South Dublin Union. His was not a minor role, and after the Rising he was sentenced to death. This was later commuted to penal servitude for life, and he was transported to Frongoch in Wales along with many other rebels. As public opinion began to favour the rebels, Cosgrave stood for election in the 1917 Kilkenny city by-election, and won despite being imprisoned. This was followed by another win the following year in Kilkenny North. Cosgrave took his seat in the First Dáil on his release from prison in 1919. -
