"Best Concerts in Oakland" Created by: Cityseeker 8 Locations Bookmarked Fox Theater "Historic Venue in Downtown Oakland" The Fox Theater in Oakland is a one-of-a-kind live entertainment venue that has been packing in cinema and music lovers since 1928. Originally a movie theater and theater, the venue switched to being primarily a cinema until 1966 when it finally closed its doors along with several other businesses in downtown Oakland. It was nearly demolished after it had by Hitchster been vacant for some time; however, the Fox Theater avoided demolition when it was declared an Oakland City Landmark. The venue reopened in February 2009 as a concert hall and music venue; it has a complete re- imagined decor with giant golden Buddhas and Middle Eastern architecture. The venue is general admission (standing room) on the ground level and stadium seating on the upper levels. +1 510 302 2250 www.thefoxoakland.com/ contact@anotherplanetent. 1807 Telegraph Avenue, com Oakland CA New Parish "Musical Stars" If music is your passion, make sure that you check out The New Parish. ROCK and KEYSER ROLL Music In My Life My Life In Music Dedicated to all the venues, bookers, house and stage managers, sound and lighting techs, promoters, publicists, photographers and videographers and roadies who have supported me and the bands I have represented over the past four plus decades. It is an honor and a privilege to work with so many highly talented musicians. I am filled with gratitude for the road I have traveled, and look forward to many more years of helping to bring live music to the world! Cover photo J.C. Juanis Cover lettering Mike Dolgushkin © 2021 Music has always been my passion. As a young guy I remember riding the #37 bus downtown to stop at the record store to pick up the latest albums. From my hometown of Baltimore I listened to WCAO radio Top 40 hits, and watched The Buddy Deane Dance Party every day after school. My early musical heroes were Dion, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Little Eva, Ray Charles, Chubby Checker, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, The Four Tops and, Stevie Wonder…. My parents were also music fans. Here are few photos from back in their day…. Debbie Reynolds ? My mom My dad (dark suit) watching Eddie Fisher at Grossinger’s Resort in the Catskills circa 1958 After dinner with Harpo Marx and his wife at their Hollywood home, Harpo serenaded circa 1963 My first foray into the music world happened on my last day of 4th grade at Liberty School #64. Dr. Carlin, the music teacher, came into our classroom. He told us that next year, in 5th grade, we could be in the school orchestra.

I Never Met a Set I Didn’t Like by Michael Erlewine INTRODUCTION This is not intended to be a finely produced book, but rather a readable document for those who are interested in in this series on concert poster artists and graphic design. What is it about having a complete set of something that is so satisfying? I have no idea, but I am an addict, that's for sure, which is not to suggest I don't collect posters in ones - singly. I am an addict for those too! But, let's just talk about sets. Before we get too far, let's be clear that aside from those sets numbered by the publisher, what constitutes a set is something more or less agreed upon by senior collectors, rather than a simple process of counting them up. There are very few numbered sets that are that simple. Even the so- called classic numbered sets of the Family Dog and Bill Graham Original Series are based on what collectors consider the numbered set, a particular set of posters, but not necessarily every piece of paper with 'Bill Graham Presents' on it.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

  • Nightlight: Tradition and Change in a Local Music Scene
NIGHTLIGHT: TRADITION AND CHANGE IN A LOCAL MUSIC SCENE Aaron Smithers A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Curriculum of Folklore. Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Glenn Hinson Patricia Sawin Michael Palm ©2018 Aaron Smithers ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Aaron Smithers: Nightlight: Tradition and Change in a Local Music Scene (Under the direction of Glenn Hinson) This thesis considers how tradition—as a dynamic process—is crucial to the development, maintenance, and dissolution of the complex networks of relations that make up local music communities. Using the concept of “scene” as a frame, this ethnographic project engages with participants in a contemporary music scene shaped by a tradition of experimentation that embraces discontinuity and celebrates change. This tradition is learned and communicated through performance and social interaction between participants connected through the Nightlight—a music venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Any merit of this ethnography reflects the commitment of a broad community of dedicated individuals who willingly contributed their time, thoughts, voices, and support to make this project complete. I am most grateful to my collaborators and consultants, Michele Arazano, Robert Biggers, Dave Cantwell, Grayson Currin, Lauren Ford, Anne Gomez, David Harper, Chuck Johnson, Kelly Kress, Ryan Martin, Alexis Mastromichalis, Heather McEntire, Mike Nutt, Katie O’Neil, “Crowmeat” Bob Pence, Charlie St. Clair, and Isaac Trogden, as well as all the other musicians, employees, artists, and compatriots of Nightlight whose combined efforts create the unique community that define a scene.

I met Dave originally may years ago when i was playing with Camper Van Beethoven and he was playing with Tiny Lights, but recently re - met him while doing shows in NY last fall with John Kruth. Dave also plays with Ween. So the band is Mark on guitar and singing and other weird sounds, Scott on drums and sampler, Dave on electric and acoustic bass, me (Jonathan) on guitar, violin, keyboards and glockenspiel, with both Dave and I singing background vocals.
