The Development of Grassroots Football in Regional Ireland: the Case of the Donegal League, 1971–1996 Abstract This article assesses the development of association football at grassroots’ level in County Donegal, a peripheral county lying in the north-west of the Republic of Ire- land. Despite the foundation of the County Donegal Football Association in 1894, soccer organisers there were unable to develop a permanent competitive structure for the game until the late 20th century and the more ambitious teams were generally forced to affiliate with leagues in nearby Derry city. In discussing the reasons for this lack of a regular structure, this paper will also focus on the success of the Donegal League, founded in 1971, in providing a season long calendar of games. It also looks at soccer administrators’ rivalry with those of Gaelic football there, and the impact of the nationalist Gaelic Athletic Association’s ‘ban’ on its members taking part in what the organisation termed ‘foreign games’. In particular, the extent to which the removal of the ‘ban’ in 1971 helped to ease co-operation between organisers of Gaelic and Association football will be explored.     Na Fianna Nuacht The Sports Forum Event was set up to provide funding to teams for the year ahead with all of the profits to be distributed to teams. The organizing committee started the process back in November with the intention of putting on a show with a high quality line up in a high quality setting that would appeal to members and non-members alike. A total of nine teams from juvenile to adult participated who would share in the profits from selling tickets and adverts as well as auction and raffle. As a club we are fortunate to have such a diverse group of members and the show would not have been possible without the help of our very own MC Shane Coleman from Newstalk, Dessie Farrell, John Horan, Jonny Cooper as well as past members Kieran McGeeney and Kenny Cunningham, and behind the scenes Senan Connell, Karl Donnelly, Neil Mulhern, Tom Dowd and Stephen Behan helped with the production. The night kicked off with Barry Murphy’s alter ego Gunther Grun providing the entertainment and it was clear to see why he is recognised as one of the 10 Kings of Irish Comedy over the last 20 years by Hot Press. Next up were Shane Coleman with Anna Geary, Kenny Cunningham and Shane Horgan. Each of the panel shared some great stories and delved into a variety of topics keeping the audience suitably entertained. After the break we were treated to some more fun from Barry Murphy, this time MC Shane Coleman being the subject matter. Following this and allowing Shane some respite from Barry’s attentions, Shane welcomed on stage Jonny Cooper and Kieran McGeeney who gave us insights into coaching and what it takes to play at the top level in sport.

Check this out. In 2010, Boden participated in 1,500 competitive games across the four codes. Given that this also involved 1,500 teams from Criostóir Ó Cuana, Úachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael performs the official opening of the other clubs with an average of 20 players per squad this Sancta Maria Complex watched by Terry O’Neill, Club Chair; Cllr. Eamonn Maloney, Mayor of South Dublin; Joan O’Flynn, Úachtarán, Cumann Camógaíochta; Colin Moran and Fr. Jimmy amounts to a total of 60,000 players taking part in gaelic games Murray, O. Carm., PP, St. Colmcille’s Knocklyon playing activity involving the club. And of course don’t forget the 1,500 referees. It is a phenomenal number. Add in all the training sessions and discussions associated with each team and the impact of this voluntary activity is truly enormous. As the country faces into difficult economic times, it is heartening to see such endeavour complemented with characteristics like passion, spirit and hope. These qualities are not in short supply in Ireland and if we can harness them properly we will overcome our problems. The club itself was overcome with joy in 2010 with the marvellous four-in-a-row senior hurling titles – an achievement that places the club among the ranks of great clubs.
