Na Fianna Camp Viennese Style

The young people of Vienna are still trying to figure out what is meant by ‘wirey’, ‘shemozzle’, and ‘pull on it’! Our man in Vienna, Kilian Smith explains last weekend’s multi- cultural experience when Na Fianna’s Mark McManus and Gavin King, exceptional ambassadors for CLG Na Fianna, landed in the Austrian capital and inspired Viennese kids and parents with an excellent Cúl Camp.

This is the second Cúl Camp in Vienna and the first to be delivered by the highly skilled GPO’s from CLG Na Fianna. On Friday last, Mark and Gavin provided coaching sessions in two schools here in Vienna. The Austrian kids announced that hurling is the ‘best game EVER’! On Saturday & Sunday, in the shadow of the Ernst Happel National Stadium, Mark and Gavin provided a GAA Cúl Camp. They engaged all parents and got them involved in the coaching during the camp. They also had time with the Vienna Gaels football and hurling players and providing advice.

The kids thoroughly enjoyed the coaching and were very impressed with both of the CLG Na Fianna lads. Parents, kids, teachers and players had nothing but positive comments about them - they really made a fantastic impression.

Vienna Gaels continue to engage local Austrians into GAA. Gavin & Mark were both encouraging and supportive of the club’s plans and gave the club lots of ideas that will be used to continue to raise the profile of the club and gain new (local) Austrian members.

The Vienna Gaels club wish to express their gratitude to Cathaoirleach Cormac Ó Donnchú and Chairman Juvenile Games Colm Davis for supporting their activities this year. In particular, the club thanks Gavin and Mark for all their work over the weekend.

Na Fianna Golf Classic 2019

A massive day out had last Friday in Donabate Golf Club when the Na Fianna Golf Classic, in aid of Senior Football and Hurling, took place. 32 teams took to the first tee-box and set about competing (ferociously!) for the prizes on offer.

We had a mixture of many old faces and some first timers, though the jury’s out on some first-time claims (eh Ciaran Fanning!!). We had a spritely bunch of octagenarians with our own Jimmy Gray leading the charge followed by Jim Gavin Senior, father of Dubs Jim Junior, and Kevin Keane, All- winner with Louth in 1957 (they could have done with him last Sunday). It was great to see these gents not giving an inch to the younger generations.

Na Fianna Nuacht 31ú Bealtaine 2019 5 Na Fianna Nuacht

The winning team was the Tom Dowd sponsored Senior Football Team of Mick Deegan, Glenn O’Reilly, David O’Hanlon, Colin Ryan. Second and third placed teams were annual supporters of the Golf Classic and it was great to see them in the prizes. Second placed was the team of John’Neill, Freddie Duignan, Pat McCarthy and Brian Bellew. Third place went to the DCU team of Ken Robinson, Frank Lee Stephen Bennett and Dominic Harris.

After the golf, we retreated to the Mobhi Suite for steak BBQ provided by Aidan and Cater4U, followed by the prize-giving and the efforts of the day were replayed and improved in the telling, no doubt.

Many thanks to Pat Breen and his organising committee and to Breege O’Reilly who assembled the fantastic hamper prizes.

Na Fianna Golf Society

Na Fianna Golf Society’s next outing will be to Forrest Little on Friday 14th June. Tee time 2.40 to 4pm, for timesheet please contact Ciaran Gray 0872269133. New members always welcome.

Na Fianna’s Dubs

Best of luck to Na Fianna’s Shane Barrett and Dublin’s Senior Hurlers in next Sunday’s Leinster Senior Hurling Championship clash against Carlow.

Dublin’s U-20 Footballers enjoyed a good win over Kildare in Newbridge last Wednesday night. Tom Gray's side included Na Fianna’s David O’Hanlon, David Lacey, Eoin O’Dea, James Doran and Brian O’Leary.

Also on Wednesday night, Na Fianna’s Sam Carthy was on the Dublin Plunkett side that claimed victory in the Bank of Ireland Celtic Challenge (U17) Group C hurling contest at O'Toole Park against Laois.

Journey of The Jersey 2019

The lure of the J1 and the opportunity to travel and work abroad for the Summer will see many of our young adult players heading away for a few months. The opportunity to fly the Na Fianna flag responsibly on foreign shores is one that the Club would like to encourage this year and all our Club tourists are being asked to send in a photo of the Na Fianna jersey being worn in the most spectacular, original or amazing world setting. Appropriately publishable pics will feature on the Club’s Social Media and Nuacht, and a prize for the best will be awarded at the end of the Summer. So pack your colours when you’re heading away, wear them with pride and send us back a pic. All photos by email to [email protected]

Comhbhrón

Sincere sympathies of the Club are offered to the O'Neill family on the passing yesterday of Mr Matthew O'Neill, Father of former Na Fianna Senior Footballer John.
