7 The Green & White Spring 2016 Donal O’Grady What a Limerick Leader!

We salute ‘Dodge’ -a great hurler, a mighty leader, a true gentleman 2013. That was the year that Bruce Springsteen played in Limerick. The headline in the ‘Limerick Leader’ read ‘Glory Days’……not a reference to the Springsteen classic but to the Munster Final of the previous Sunday when Limerick ended a 17 year wait for provincial success. The man who led Limerick that day was Donal O Grady from Ballingarry. Donal led by example every day he took the field with Limerick. After almost a decade and a half as a senior intercounty player, ’Dodge’ has decided to call it a day. He had seen many campaigns end in disappointment before Limerick finally ended the 17 year famine. Speaking to The Irish Examiner, Donal recalled the highlights of his career in the Green and White of Limerick: “2013 is probably the obvious one, winning the Munster title. Winning that day was a return on the uncertainty that the supporters had felt for years — every time they thought things were going right, we fell flat on our faces. “Putting the joy back on the faces of the Limerick public was the great reward that day rather than getting a medal in your back pocket. People thought we got carried away that year, not a bit of it. was the manager and he handled that so well, after the Munster final. We lost to Clare in the All-Ireland semi-final but it had nothing to do with getting carried away. Then, the three games against Tipperary in 2007 — the madness of it, a small ball and 240 or 250 minutes of hurling, the two teams being inseparable — then you had coming in that year, the aura he had. That was a great year.” One of his teammates that year, , was the best man he played alongside (“The best to read a puck-out — he’d just look at you and put the ball in front of you”), while an early lesson against always stayed with O’Grady: “It was a league game but he played as though it was championship. That told me a lot about what you needed to play inter-county.” Above all, though the memory of bringing the Munster cup back home in 2013 is strongest.

“The lads shouldered me Illustration: Declan Considine down the street that day. I was half-embarrassed. But there were people there in Ballingarry that day from all over Limerick, people I’d say were never there before or since. But they made the effort to get there that Monday. It’s grand to be at the match, but to turn up the following day, to make that trip. That showed what it meant.” Limerick line out in 2016 without the skill, experience and leadership of the - Ballingarry man who led the county with distinction. And nobody will be happier if there are more Glory Days. G&W

Stephen Walsh has played football and hurling for Limerick at all grades. Since he turned fifteen, his life has marched to the beat of the GAA drum. His talents in demand by football and hurling management, he has juggled studies, work commitments and the regime of an elite sportsman. In September 2015, Stephen took on a new challenge as Principal of Kilbehenny NS. Stephen has managed to find time to act as coach/selector to South Limerick in the Mackey Cup for a number of years. As a former player with South Limerick in the Mackey and Sarsfield Cups, Stephen is keen to help today’s young players achieve their potential. The Green and White caught up with Stephen recently.

Q. What kind of commitment is involved in intercounty While it is a major commitment, it is such a privilege hurling? Let’s look at training sessions, gym sessions, to train with and play against the best players in diet, rest etc. the country. I enjoyed every minute of my time The commitment required to play at the highest level is with Limerick and it was a difficult decision increasing all the time. There have been so many advances to arrive at when I decided to leave at the made, in such a short period of time, in areas such as beginning of December last. Having strength and conditioning, coaching, tactics, nutrition, recently taken on the role as analysis etc. that the bar is constantly being raised. principal of Kilbehenny The intercounty scene is a pressurised environment and NS, I felt the time everyone involved within it is forever looking for that extra was right for me bit to give them an edge over their opponent. to walk away. A typical week would see you doing something most days between gym programmes, collective training sessions and working on some individual things yourself, in the gym or the ball alley. It’s a long season, and the focus evolves as the year progresses. Typically, from November to the beginning of the National League, the focus is on strength and conditioning. The majority of the heavy gym lifting and lung- busting runs are done during this period. It is an important time as it prepares you physically and mentally for the season ahead. The National League brings a welcome break from this heavy training and the focus shifts to recovery between games and improving the quality of your hurling. I always enjoyed the League as there was a game to look forward to every week or so. Once the league finishes there is a shift in training towards speed and agility in preparation for the Championship. Collective sessions on the hurling field are increased and while it is important to persist with gym programmes, the heavy lifting of preseason isn’t the priority now as the ground has hardened and the speed of hurling has increased. Finding time to rest and recover in amongst all of this is important too. Finding the perfect combination to the work-life-play balance has become a greater challenge over the past few seasons. The consensus at present would suggest that intercounty hurling is fast becoming a younger man’s game and it is hard to argue against this assumption. Intercounty players are retiring at a younger age than those who played the game when I started playing. On the Limerick hurling panel last year, I was the third oldest player at 29 years of age.

Limerick are the schools I’ve had an association with. What competitions do Kilbehenny NS participate in? The area would predominantly be a foot- balling area and the school has participated in football and ladies football in the past. This year we hope to enter a camogie and hurling team also! Do you find your new job as Principal of Kilbehenny NS very challenging? Is it more difficult to combine playing with your new post? I enjoy my new role immensely. I took up the post in September. Yes, it’s challenging, but extremely interesting and rewarding at the same time. I was an external appointment and the community have been great in terms of welcoming me to the area. The main reason I retired from the intercounty scene was as a result of this appointment. I felt I could no longer give the required level of commitment to hurling with Limerick while effectively carrying out my duties as principal of Kilbehenny NS. Would you be interested in coaching in the future? It’s definitely something I will consider in the future. My involvement with Cumann na mBunscol has shown me how rewarding this avenue can be, but for now I’m happy to continue playing with my club. G&W

2004 Munster Football Final (Draw & Replay)

Everything the Limerick footballers had done over the previous four seasons led to this place and time. We were ready to take on the power and might, the tradition and history of the Kingdom of Kerry in a Munster senior football final. I have few clear memories of the drawn game played on a warm July afternoon in Limerick. Both Tipperary and Waterford had been dispatched in earlier rounds (worryingly, Limerick conceded three goals against the former). Midway through the second half, I recall a middle-aged townie in front of me saying that we were going to win. I remember thinking he had no idea of the weight of history leaning against us, both on and off the field. I recall talking to a few Kerry people outside the Davin Arms (a famous public house near the Gaelic Grounds at that time) before the game; they wholeheart- edly believed they only had to stand up to beat Limerick any day. “Shure Limerick haven’t beaten us since 1896 and it’s going to be no different today.” The refrain of the Saw Doctor’s song swirled in my head, TO WIN JUST ONCE, THAT WOULD BE ENOUGH. (Note: I am listening to that very track ‘Live in ’- via YouTube - while writing this article). My memories of the drawn game centre on the last few minutes. Two things stick out: Eoin Keating’s ‘45’ that was caught above the crossbar by Darragh O’Sé; and the free that wasn’t, which saved our bacon, when Russell of Kerry was assailed on his way through but the referee didn’t blow. A draw and a trip to the following Sunday was our reward, but the common feeling amongst the fans was that we had missed the boat. Did the players and management feel the same? Killarney was tough to get into, and hard to get out of afterwards. Limerick went two goals clear but, instead of kicking on, they conceded some poor scores before the short whistle. Limerick’s

24 The Green & White Spring 2016

half time position was so much less than they deserved. The inevitable happened in the second half, as was so often 2004 Munster Football the case over the previous 108 years... At the final whistle, Kerry hardly raised a cheer. Of course, it would have been a dream come true for the green and white army to run onto the pitch to celebrate a Munster Senior Football title Final (Draw & Replay) for only the second time in history. In any case, I walked onto the pitch and wandered around in a daze. I was still there when all the interviews were over and the players had come and gone from the dressing rooms. I still have a photo (taken with a standard 35mm compact, in an era just before the smart phone!) of Liam Kearns walking off the pitch, alone, after his final pitch-side interview. I shook hands with him but I don’t remember what I said, if anything. What could either of us have said in any case? Who cared about the qualifiers, and the inevitable ambush − what an awful system that was (and still is) where the provincial final loser was cannon fodder for a winning qualifier county coming in the back door. The programmes for both games are pretty non-descript affairs. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon for A4/A5 productions of this era and the resulting blandness can make it hard for collectors to recall these programmes from memory. The programme for the drawn game runs to 64 pages and cost €3. On Page 7, there is a feature on The Green & White Magazine, and a photo of Joe and Ciarán looking just about 12 years younger than they do today! The cover is a strange montage of Limerick and Kerry players in various action poses. The 48-page programme for the replay was very reasonably priced at €2. The cover features a fine action shot, taken the previous week, of Johnny Murphy contesting a high ball with Darragh Ó Sé as current Kerry supremo Eamon Fitzmaurice looks on. What a pity our rise to prominence came at a time when Kerry were winning All- Ireland football titles with the likes of ‘Gooch’ and the three O’Sé brothers, all true legends of the game. I would love to know how this Limerick team would have gotten on in a once-off game against the Clare team that made the breakthrough in Munster 12 years previously, when Kerry were not nearly at the same level. That Clare team are regarded as legends, while we wistfully look back, with nothing but the knowledge that we came as close as anyone to breaking the claustrophobic hegemony that (except for 1992) Kerry and Cork have enjoyed in Munster Football going back to the 1930s. G&W

25 The Green & White Spring 2016

Munster Football ‘ Na Piarsaigh ’ Championship Limerick v Kerry 1970, Limerick v Clare 1982 1970 Limerick played Kerry in − the venue for quite a large number of Limerick Munster Football Championship games over the years − in early July, 1970. We lost by 2-19 to 2-5, which was not a bad result considering Kerry were to go on and win the All-Ireland football final (v Meath) a few months later. Kerry had Mick O’Connell and Mick O’ Dwyer while Limerick had , and Eamonn Cregan! By how much would Limerick have beaten Kerry if it were a hurling contest? The programme is a very basic one-sheet effort; it cost 6 old pence. It happens to be the only Munster Football Championship programme from the 1970s (featuring Limerick) that I have collected in 19 years of rambling about! It was an era of wretchedly poor provin- cial programmes, a fact borne out by that year’s Munster Football final production which looked more like a bad pirate imitation than the official programme for the showpiece Gaelic football match in Munster that year. The era of the official souvenir programme was still a few years away - and it felt like it too! 1982 A much more interesting programme is the one for the Munster Football Championship clash between Limerick and Clare in May 1982. It was played as the curtain raiser to that year’s All-Ireland Club football final between Nemo Rangers (Cork) and Garrymore (Mayo). It is a 6-page menu programme, as was the preferred style of the programme editor/printer in for a few years in the mid-1980s. It cost 20 new pence, an eight-fold increase on the cost of the 1970 programme mentioned above. Inflation was no joke in those years! Limerick lost this game by 4-12 to 0-8. You lost, you were out of the championship back then. No back door, Division Four or not!
