4 The Green & White Winter 2016 Cumann na mBunscol News The Daly News!

At a time when underage hurling in Limerick is going from strength to strength, Anthony Daly is Head Coach of Limerick’s Underage Hurling Academy. The G&W team recently met up with the legendary Clareman who twice captained his county to All Ireland hurling glory. Favourite Things: Outside the GAA: Coursing, swimming and walking. Holiday Destination: Portugal... Hawaii, with the Clare lads, was a big highlight too! Food: Steak Pet: A ‘non pet’ really! A dog called Mazie!!! Entertainment: On TV, I like ... obviously! The Field is a great movie. [Actor/Actress/Singer/Song?] Bruce Willis, Halle Berry, Christy Moore, Before the Deluge. Sports Star (non-GAA): Paul O Connell Current Hurler (outside of Limerick & Clare): Limerick Hurler (of your era): Ciarán Carey Anthony Daly shares his thoughts with the Green áand White G&W: What are your earliest GAA memories? Anthony Daly: The ‘78 Munster final. We left it behind us! Playing Under 12s for Clarecastle ... and John Hanley. John Hanley [teacher] kept us playing every day, no matter what the weather was like it was, ‘Out!’ I could nearly give him one of my All Ireland medals! G&W: Name a current strength and a current weaknesses in Limerick hurling? AD: The Academy system is a huge strength. It’s revolutionary compared to the system I grew up with where if you got a Clare minor trial and you played badly, that was it. You got one chance to impress. Weaknesses? It’s not really a weakness but in a dual county where lads are playing football and hurling with club and school, the demands on lads are massive, unreal. It’s very hard to keep both codes going. Burnout is an issue but it’s an issue for lots of counties. I come from a dual club. Hurling was number one. We trained Tuesday and Thursday. At the end of hurling training, the footballs were thrown out for a few kicks. Nowadays, lads are training with so many teams. Huge demands on them. It’s hard to keep them fresh. G&W: What do you think is Limerick’s greatest strength? AD: I used always say, going back to my team, that Limerick would come at you in waves. You could feel it almost drip down at you from the stand ... the passion! I can remember loads of games over the years, famously in 1996 when we were defending our All-Ireland title and we were in control of the game, but we couldn’t get to four points ahead and put them away. And then this wave came and we couldn’t stop it! Even in League games, that passion ran through the whole thing. G&W: What’s the future for Limerick hurling? AD: As far as I can see, things are being done the right way but people need to be patient. I’m a firm believer that players with character win you All- rather than Flashy Dans. There is every effort being made to produce quality individuals. G&W: Any advice for young hurlers? Anthony Daly: You need to have the hurley in your hand every day, even Christmas Day. Never leave it out of your hand! It doesn’t matter even if it’s snowing. I remember when I took over Dublin, we had a training session organised and it was snowing. The motorway was impassable. About 13 lads made it to training but we went ahead. Somebody had a yellow sliotar. I wanted to get the message across that you need to be hurling every day. Get some bit done every day. Left and right. Anthony Daly Academy Coach 5 The Green & White Winter 2016

A virtuoso performance by team captain Eric Stritch paved the way for the win as he scored three goals. Limerick were Munster champions again! With Wexford beating Offaly that same afternoon, The drawn 1996 Munster Hurling Final was played in anything was now possible. Our train was delayed for Limerick against the old enemy, Tipperary. It was the last nearly two hours on the way back to Limerick Junction but true championship year. 1975 Munster Hurling Championship (Draw and Replay)

Limerick and Tipperary also drew in the Munster Hurling Championship back in 1975. The drawn game was played on July 6th in Thurles but you would have been hard pressed to find that important information by looking at the programme, an 8-page green-paper production that cost 10p. The back cover featured an advertisement for the Pallottine Fathers. There was even a ‘pirate’ (unofficial programme) for this game. It also cost 10p.

The semi-final replay took place in Limerick on Sunday, July 20th. The 20-page match pro- gramme cost 10p, it had a distinctive harsh green and blue cover. Thirteen of the 20 pages were advertisements for local businesses, many of which are still in existence, including Leo Morrison and Hannon’s Furniture Store. S. Mac Cártaigh’s signature is on the front cover. (McCárthaigh was Munster Council secretary for nearly 50 years, until 1977). This was a sure sign that the pro- gramme was official. I have no ‘pirate’ programme from this game but, as a collector with a particular grá for such items, I am always on the lookout for interesting items like these.
