  • Coaching Pedagogy in Inter-County Gaelic Football
Coaching Pedagogy in Inter-County Gaelic Football Paul Kinnerk, BSc. A thesis submitted to the University of Limerick in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Dr Mark Lyons, Dr Philip Kearney and Prof Stephen Harvey Submitted to the University of Limerick, June 2020 2 Abstract Coaching Pedagogy in Inter-County Gaelic Football Paul Kinnerk This programme of research had two aims which organised the research into two distinct phases. Phase one explored the coaching pedagogy being applied by coaches in the sport of Gaelic football at inter-county level. Informed by phase one, phase two examined the effects of a Game Based Approach (GBA) intervention in an academy inter-county Gaelic football setting. The overall programme of research adopted a theoretical framework informed by Complex Learning Theory. In phase one, quantitative data from a survey of 150 coaches revealed they spent notable time in activities deemed less relevant to game play, along with arranging their practice activities in a linear format (i.e., skills before games). In the follow up study of 12 elite level Gaelic football coaches, an inductive thematic analysis of coach interviews produced two higher order themes (planning and in-session coaching strategies). The results provided a rich description of coaches’ practice, revealing coaches displayed varying levels of sophistication and content knowledge on the many tenets (e.g., questioning, sequence, ownership, game design) of coaching pedagogy. Despite a small number of coaches displaying strong alignment with GBA pedagogy, no coach reported basing their practice on GBAs as outlined in the academic literature.

  • 1606X PROGRAMME PLUS 010716
PROGRAMME PLUS – VOLUME 1, NUMBER 6, JULY 1 st , 2016 Welcome, collectors, to the sixth edition of ‘Programme Plus’, and apologies at the outset for the one-week delay in publication which arose due to work commitments. This little offering is put together on a voluntary basis so there will be occasions when the ‘real work’ has to come first I’m afraid. The fact that the last Friday in June fell early, on the 24 th , didn’t help the situation, but it’s a case of ‘better late than never’ I hope, and everything should be back on an even keel for the next edition which is due to be completed on July 29 th . Some subscribers have informed me that certain collectors are of the opinion that the content of the bulletin is too negative in parts, particularly with regard to the programme reviews. I was disappointed to hear this, but not in the least bit surprised that the collectors in question didn’t have the common courtesy to inform me directly. Neither is it a shock to note that none of the people concerned have contributed in any way to this venture since it was launched at the start of the year. Programme collecting is no different than any other walk of life, with certain people always on hand to knock the efforts of others without volunteering anything of note themselves. Personally, I would prefer to be honest in a review rather than patting every programme editor on the back without casting a critical eye over what they have produced.

  • 2021 GAA MEDIA GUIDE Treoirleabhar Na Meán 2021
2021 GAA MEDIA GUIDE Treoirleabhar na Meán 2021 @officialgaa 2021 GAA Media Guide - Teachtaireacht ón Uachtaráin Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur romhaibh go léir ar ais chuig ár gcluichí The last 14 months have come as a challenge to us all and while we have some distance to travel before we can once again look forward to big games with full stadiums, there are green shoots ahead of us. Who could have known in mid-March last year when we took the decision to shut our activities down, that the Covid challenge would still be front and centre as the summer of 2021 approaches? The best of the GAA shone as we grappled with profound changes to our lives and the supports provided by our club and county network to those who needed them most was both heartening and reassuring. Our games when they returned were a welcome tonic. The club championships and all of the activity that preceded them helped breathe life back into communities right across the GAA family. Similarly, in the darkest days of winter the inter-county games provided us with a focal point and a welcome distraction as we grew accustomed to supporting our players and teams from afar. In the coming weeks, the Allianz League games will come thick and fast and the interest and excitement will follow. We have shown flexibility in organising our competitions, most notably in football where again a straight knockout approach will apply. I would like to acknowledge the buy-in from everyone concerned in helping to make both last year and this season work, and I have no doubt that the entertainment value and profile of the games will be as high as ever.
