Pat: Yes, I played from under 10 up. Keith: When did you start managing teams? Pat: I started with South Liberties under age and I was lucky to train county teams at under 14 and under 16 level. Keith: Was it always your dream to manage a county team? Pat: Well, like every young Limerick boy, I dreamed of playing for my county. I don’t know if I ever dreamed of management. Keith: Has the game of hurling changed a lot since you were playing? Pat: The game has gotten a lot faster and the players are very knowledgea- ble about fitness and nutrition and even recovery. But the basic game is still the same – you’ve got to score to win. Keith: Outside of GAA, what do you enjoy doing? Pat: I love looking after the buses and getting all the students of Catherine McAuley school to and from school safely. Keith: Do you have a favourite food and drink? Pat: Chicken. I don’t drink alcohol too often as it can be very damaging to a person. Keith: What is your favourite film? Pat: I like the Taken movies with Liam Neeson Keith: Which person – alive or dead --would you like to meet? Pat: I would have loved to have met Mohamad Ali. He was a hero of mine and an unbelieveable sportsman. Keith: Finally Pat, Do you think Limerick will win a senior All Ireland Hurling title soon? Pat: Well Keith, a huge amount of work has been done in the clubs, in the schools and in the county development set up at under age level over the past few years so I hope that in the next 2 to 3 years that we’ll see the McCarthy cup in Limerick. 5 The Green & White Winter 2017 Munster Senior Camogie Champions: Limerick Limerick won the Munster Senior Camogie Young camogie Championship for the very first time in players from 2017. 9 The Green & White Winter 2017 Having a Ball at Killinure NS The Have a Ball Programme was run in conjunction with the GAA. Killinure N.S was chosen as one of the schools to pilot the programme as part of research being undertaken by DCU. “We were made aware of it by Willie Walsh who is the coach who comes to our school from the /Boher club,” according to Jonathan Dervan. “Senior Infants, First and Second Class took part, although only First Class feature in the video. The participating children tracked their footsteps daily for a week with pedometers. There were child and parent questionnaires as part of the research into the fitness and activity measurements of the children. “DCU visited the school on two occasions, once to get a baseline reading on the fitness and fundamental skills such as balance, agility, crawling, rolling, coordination, running, throwing, catching, kicking and striking. Willie Walsh and the teachers involved then ran PE and coaching sessions for 12 weeks and the participants were reassessed on the same skills. “The new Have a Ball Programme uses this research to provide real evidence of the success of the programme in improving these fundamental skills which are necessary for all sports and, more importantly, to ensure sports are fun and enjoyable for all children.” Here’s a link to the YouTube video that explains the ‘Have a Ball’ programme that Killinure NS took part in last year: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2-No4WHw9s

Dear sirs, My daughter Aoife is a big fan of The Green & White so she made a point of bringing a copy with her to Rome at Easter. She loves the magazine and she has a stack of them at home that she is constantly re-reading. The publication is a credit to all concerned. The high production values really pay off. The wide coverage of games and the well reproduced photos from underage games in the county are great. As a parent, I can really see how Aoife and her friends make the positive association of seeing themselves appearing in a professional publication with participating in school and club teams. While they play for the love of the games, we should not underestimate the value of what The Green and White is doing, especially when you see the high levels of drop-off, amongst girls in particular, as they move into the teenage years. Keep up the good work! Tweets Morgan Lyons Dear @LimerickGAAzine @WestlimerickGaa massive well done to the Larkin and Sarsfield West (by email) Limerick sides ... and especially our Senan’s players.
