Winter2018 Les Nouvelles 3 Feature articles Welcome in this issue: It seems like only yesterday that I was approached by our Connétable and asked if I would consider editing Les P 10 Parish News Nouvelles (actually, I normally tell everyone that he held a knife to my throat and, daring me to disagree, announced I was the new editor) and suddenly, or so it seems, he is calling it a day. Time passes very quickly when you live from quarter to quarter.

Given the work load he has not only taken on board, but also increased by his very manifest community involvement, it will come as no surprise that a combination of regret at his decision and gratitude for his achievements take up a noticeable part of this edition of Les Nouvelles. P 22 But I haven’t forgotten the necessity to maintain plenty of general interest to read, and so you will discover that having, in earlier issues, looked at our two harbours, we Bouonne have moved on to passage graves in which I have been well briefed by Olga Finch the santé Curator of Archaeology for Heritage. Our first visit was to Faldouet and, with Olga’s insight, what I had long seen as a dead pile of stones was bought very much to life. I am also sharing with you some wonderful photographs of rather gracious living over one hundred years ago on the furthest outpost of our Parish, Les Ecrehous. There is also news of a beautiful work far produced ay EYECAN, and a look back of aspects of the history of drinking in St Martin. P30 Les Écréhous A quick flag up for the next (late May, early June) issue which sees the start of an in quieter times occasional series on Normandy beyond the places we see on a day-trip; something for the weekend away perhaps? We will look at the joy of mushrooms with a Michelin-starred chef who I have described as “the mushroom king”. You might try ordering your meal with him in Jèrriais and you can brush up your ability to understand it by always reading the dual language article by David Marett. It could be useful when travelling; my wife, who learnt to speak Norman patois as a child, has no problems understanding our traditional Island language. Long may it continue to survive, and with luck, spread out. Finally I have grouped together some stories and pictures under a “Parish News” headline and my thanks once again to the indefatigable Michel Le Troquer for filling most of that section. Meanwhile, for those thinking of standing for the States in May, there is a helpful guide on sounding good while saying nothing of moment in our re gular Pick ‘n’ Mix feature. P40 Michel Le Troquer As this magazine is going to Print Kay Laverty and her team are hard at work preparing for the Britain in Bloom competition; a report on what they have achieved will appear in the next issue. Hotel’ – is, we can vouch from frequent personal experience, superior, for both cheapness and quality of provisions, to any other inn in the place.’ In 1853 it was called the British Hotel and in time became the Bri tish and Elfine Hotel. There is a story relating to a Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey, Sir Tomkyns Hilgrove Turner. He was, coincidentally, the son of a St Helier taverner, and made a very successful military career. Hilgrove Street is named after him. At the siege of Valenciennes (1793) he found his wife to be, Esther. Surprisingly for that time, her sister married his batman, Sergeant Cantell. The batman and his wife took over the British Hotel at a time when the oyster and shipbuilding industries had made Gorey prosperous. Turner retired to Jersey in 1835 and was put in charge of Mont Orgueil, when he imposed a 6d charge on visitors wishing to see the castle. He did not collect the admission money for himself but left it to ‘a veteran artillery-sergeant caretaker’ who may or may not have been his bro ther in law, Sergeant Cantell, who had taken over the British Hotel 21 years before. Mr P J Cantell is listed as the owner of the hotel in 1896. The hotel was renamed The Moorings in 1949. There was not much of a ‘village’ surrounding the parish church until the mid-20th Century – before then there were just scattered houses. The Royal is not listed in the1851 Census, but in 1896 a directory states: ‘ From the Royal a coach runs every Wednesday and Saturday to St Helier.’ The other St Martin pub by the church was the Crown; the building survived for many years as the Crown Stores under various owners and is now run by the Sandpiper Group. What of the future of the pub in modern times? They have now become family-friendly’; they serve good food and the best are show cases for local produce and local ga stronomy – and exemplify the pleasures of friendship, good food and drink.

30 Les Nouvelles Winter2018 Les Écréhous in quieter times! The photographs accompanying this article belong to John Andrews, from Perth in Scotland, whose great-grandfather, Fred Holdaway, owned a house on Maître Isle. Mr Holdaway, who was Mayor of Winchester in 1911-12, is seen at the head of the dinner table. Also pictured are his daughter, his sister, his brother and two nieces. The photographs were taken by Mr Holdaway’s son, Ted, and a family friend, Mr F A Grant. Hamish Marett-Crosby sets the scene. The group of Islands and rocks known collectively as Les Écréhous lies six miles north-east of Jersey (eight miles from France). Administratively part of the Parish of Saint Martin they occasionally make the news. There was the residence of the soi-disant King of Les Écréhous Alphonse Le Gastelois, but the event that really hit the headlines in recent years was the – let us hope – last gasp of the long running dispute about sovereignty; the French demonstration/invasion in 1993 and 1994 Partly in protest against Channel Island fishing regulations and partly because they wanted the Ecréhous to be recognised as part of France, the French landed on the Ecréhous and raised Norman flags. The 1994 'invasion' became a bit of a cause celebre for the international Press and was monitored closely by the States Police and of course the St Martin Honorary police. The Union Flag that had been pulled down in 1993 was guarded by policemen. In the end, after only minor trouble being caused, the French had lunch on the islands before going back home. A priest who was part of the expedition said mass on the islands for the first time since the ruined priory was in use, praying for the restoration of the islets to Normandy. He created an outline of a church and altar using vraic he collected from the sea. To date his prayers remain unanswered. The issue had in fact already been settled back in 1953 when the dispute was submitted to the Hague Tribunal. In this case, which equally concerned Les Minquiers, the Jersey team was advised by then Attorney-General, later Bailiff of Jersey, the late Cecil St anley Harrison and after a most lengthy hearing the sovereignty of both groups of islets was decided in favour of the United Kingdom. There are now no permanent residents on the islands nor is there any fresh water. There are a small number of fishermen's huts, some used as holiday residences, on the largest islets, and one official building, a customs house. Such excitement is an exception on the reef as photographs taken during Edwardian times show. These fascinating images are thought to have been taken in 1906 and 1912 when life at the reef seems to have been a somewhat elegant affair judging by the residents’ attire – especially when gathered around the dinner table. There is an intriguing contrast between what to modern eyes is the excessively formal wear of those enjoying their leisure and the worki ng clothes of the fisherman. Stories of the British changing for dinner, even when in the jungle, come to mind. The Editor would like to thank Philip Jeune of PJ News who passed on these fascinating photographs to Les Nouvelles. Winter2018 Les Nouvelles 41 Jerry Collins Parish Secretary Michel Le Troquer – what makes him special? I should imagine that everyone knows that Michel was a States Police Inspector. That is probably why he makes a note of absolutely everything, plays exactly by the rules with a straight bat, and is scrupulously fair to everyone. His attention to detail is extraordinary, nothing gets past him. Even when he doesn’t initially understand something because it’s not his area of expertise, he asks questions until he has fully grasped it – then the meeting can be moved on. The idea of “winging it” would not occur to him. Everything he does, is done properly, there are no half-measures. He reads every States Paper and attends just about every meeting and presentation possible. Every letter, every email, every instruction is comprehensive and finely detailed. He is a perfectionist. Whatever the subject, query or problem, it is taken seriously. That is why he can be seen working in the office long before and after the rest of us mere mortals have arrived or left. The work Michel does cannot be squeezed into a standard working week. If anyone deserves a restful retirement, our Connétable does – but somehow I don’t see him just lying back and putting his feet up …….I’m not sure he knows how! Steve Luce Parish Deputy Karen White I have already mentioned in my parish letter in the Secretary of St Martin’s opening pages of this magazine, the successful work Jumelage Association initiated by Michel as regards our Parish assets but it is not just the material things on which he has St Martin’s Jumelage Association has concentrated.
