  • Isaac Watts - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Isaac Watts - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Isaac Watts(17 July 1674 – 25 November 1748) Isaac Watts (17 July 1674 – 25 November 1748) was an English hymnwriter, theologian and logician. A prolific and popular hymnwriter, he was recognised as the "Father of English Hymnody", credited with some 650 hymns. Many of his hymns remain in use today, and have been translated into many languages. Born in Southampton, England, in 1674, Watts was brought up in the home of a committed religious Nonconformist — his father, also Isaac Watts, had been incarcerated twice for his controversial views. At King Edward VI School (where one of the houses is now named "Watts" in his honour), Watts learned Latin, Greek and Hebrew. From an early age, Watts displayed a propensity for rhyme. Watts, unable to go to either Oxford or Cambridge on account of his non- conformity, went to the Dissenting Academy at Stoke Newington in 1690, and much of his life centred around that village, which is now part of Inner London. His education led him to the pastorate of a large independent chapel in London, where he found himself in the position of helping trainee preachers, despite his poor health. Taking work as a private tutor, Watts lived with the Nonconformist Hartopp family at Fleetwood House, on Church Street in Stoke Newington, and later in the household of their immediate neighbours Sir Thomas Abney and Lady Mary. Though a Nonconformist, Sir Thomas practised occasional conformity to the Church of England, as necessitated by his being Lord Mayor of London between 1700 and 1701.

I’m thankful for my parents, Donald and Jane McNett, who consistently pestered me by asking “How’s it coming with your thesis? Are you done yet?” I’m thankful for friends, such as: Adam Suarez, Phillip Sitter, Brandon Roney, Robert Gayden and Zach Folken, who would periodically ask me “What’s your thesis about again?” That was a question that would unintentionally put me back on track. In terms of staying on task my thesis committee (mentioned elsewhere) was nothing short of a godsend. It hasn’t been an easy two-and-a-half years going from basic ideas to a proposal to a thesis, but Drs.

  • A Forgotten War Remembered: the Korean Conflict
A Forgotten War Remembered: The Korean Conflict Interviewer: Phil Marnell Interviewee: James S. Hecker 2/09/2004 Table of Contents Statement of Purpose Biography Historical Contextualization Interview Transcription Interview Analysis Works Consulted Statement of Purpose The purpose of this history project is to research the Korean War and preserve an oral first-hand recollection of a soldier who fought in it. The Korean War represents the first full scale confrontation between the Western Democracies and Communists during the Cold War. When Communist North Korea invaded the Republic of South Korea in 1950, the country proved a testing ground for Truman’s containment policy and the first battleground for a United Nations’ peace keeping force. By the time of the armistice in 1953 the United States suffered 50,000 casualties, and the dividing line between North and South Korea remained identical to that of 1950 when the conflict began. Jim Hecker participated in this conflict as a Lieutenant in the 7th Marines. His interview provides military tactics, policies, and viewpoints concerning the war from a former participant. Table of Contents Jim Hecker - A Brief Biography Jim Hecker was born in Landonsville, New Jersey on August 1, 1926. He was raised by his father Frank, an industrial engineer, and mother Linda, an Italian immigrant. He received a Catholic school education and graduated from Sacred Heart High School at age fifteen. After attending Drexel college for a year, he was accepted to the Naval Program at Drew University, and continued his training at the University of Pennsylvania and Quantico Virginia. He graduated in 1946 as a second Lieutenant and then served in Peping, China, guarding airfields and coal trains from Communist armies.

EXILE AND EMPIRE: POST-IMPERIAL NARRATIVE AND THE NATIONAL EPIC: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF RUSHDIE’S THE SATANIC VERSES & VIRGIL’S AENEID By KENNETH SAMMOND A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Comparative Literature Written under the direction of Steven F. Walker And approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey January, 2011 ©2011 Kenneth Sammond ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Exile and Empire: Post-Imperial Narrative and the National Epic: A Comparative Study of Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses and Virgil’s Aeneid By KENNETH SAMMOND Dissertation Director: Professor Steven F. Walker This dissertation juxtaposes Virgil’s Aeneid with Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses in order to explore how epics, which question and upend our very ideas of civilization, represent a crisis in culture and anticipate new ways of imagining community. This juxtaposition, developed from allusions to Virgil found in The Satanic Verses, examines how Virgil’s epic imagines empire and how Rushdie’s work, as a type of epic, creates a narrative that I term, ‘post-imperial.’ Post-imperial narrative is defined as part of the evolution of the epic genre and its ways of imagining community. To create this definition, I represent a genealogy of epic traits both structural and thematic, arguing that epic themes express totalizing perspectives and changes that irrevocably alter the world. This genealogy reveals how epics imagine communities by creating self-definitional traits, historical and cosmological contexts, and anticipated futures.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Very pleased to bring you an interview with one of my favourite modern producers, Jil Addis. This month’s issue also sees the review of #Ending The Silence by Euton Daley’s Unlock The Chains Collective. It had been some time since I saw a live show in a theatre and it was very energising to witness such a vital show. Another local event was the start of reggae nights in Eynsham thanks to Richie Roots, writer for The Dub. Hopefully that can now be a regular feature. Pete Clack brings us a profile on a true individual and his connection to New Orleans music – Little Richard. Richard was a trailblazer and a controversial figure for many reasons, as well as giving one Jimi Hendrix one of his first touring jobs in his band. I have loved having Pete’s reports from the blues end of town as reggae owed so much to the sounds of New Orleans, Chicago and elsewhere in the USA. Thanks again to Steve Mosco for his continued support, it means a great deal as for many years I used to buy records from his online Reggae Music Store.

  • The Rastafari Movement Is a Monotheistic, Abrahamic, New Religious Movement That Arose in a Christian Culture in Jamaica in the 1930S
PREPARED BY JAH ROOTSMAN July 2010 RASTAFARI The Rastafari movement is a monotheistic, Abrahamic, new religious movement that arose in a Christian culture in Jamaica in the 1930s. Its adherents, who worship Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, former Emperor of Ethiopia (1930–1936 and 1941–1974), as the Second Advent, are known as Rastafarians, or Rastas. The movement is sometimes referred to as "Rastafarianism", but this term is considered derogatory and offensive by some Rastas, who dislike being labelled as an "ism". Rastafari is not a highly organized ‘religion’; it is a movement and an ideology. Many Rastas say that it is not a "religion" at all, but a "Way of Life". Most Rastas do not claim any sect or denomi- nation, and thus encourage one another to find faith and inspiration within themselves, although some do identify strongly with one of the "mansions of Rastafari" — the three most prominent of these being the Nyahbinghi, the Bobo Ashanti and the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The name Rastafari is taken from Ras Tafari, the pre-regnal title of Haile Selassie I, composed of Amharic Ras (literally "Head," an Ethiopian title equivalent to Duke), and Haile Selassie's pre-regnal given name, Tafari. Rastafari are generally distinguished for asserting the doctrine that Haile Selassie I, the former, and final, Emperor of Ethiopia, is another incarnation of the Christian God, called Jah. They see Haile Selassie I as Jah or Jah Rastafari, who is the second coming of Jesus Christ onto the Earth. The Rastafari movement encompasses themes such as the spiritual use of cannabis and the rejection of western society (called Babylon, in reference more to the metaphoric Babylon of Christianity than to the historical Mesopotamian city-state).

  • The Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts
The Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts Author(s): Watts, Isaac Publisher: ccel Description: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts brings together some of the best hymns by beloved hymn writer Isaac Watts. Watts, who wrote over six hundred hymns, had a penchant for incor- porating strong theology into his hymns. Consequently, his hymns not only entertain; they also teach. Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts includes a hymn for almost every book of Psalms. (And for many chapters, it has several hymns.) It also has four hundred additional hymns and spiritual songs, broadly arranged in three categories--hymns from Scripture, hymns on "Divine Subjects," and hymns for communion. It also contains many of Watt©s more popular hymns--for ex- ample, "Joy to the World" and "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross."
