DERNOV Institute of Geological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine е-mail: [email protected] * Corresponding author THREE NEW SPECIES OF NAUTILIDS (CEPHALOPODS) FROM THE CARBONIFEROUS OF THE DONETS BASIN (EASTERN UKRAINE) Three new species of nautilids (Gzheloceras aisenvergi sp. nov., Knightoceras extorris sp. nov. and Planetoceras yefimenkoi sp. nov.) have been described from the Carboniferous of the Donets Basin (Ukraine). Gzheloceras aisenvergi sp. nov. is mor- phologically close to the “Gzheloceras” orthocostatum (Kruglov, 1939) and Gzheloceras memorandum Shimansky, 1967. Knightoceras oxylobatum Miller et Downs, 1948 and K. patulum (Unklesbay, 1962) are the most morphologically related species to the K. extorris sp. nov. The form of the conch and the surface ornamentation of Planetoceras yefimenkoi sp. nov. are most similar to the type of genus (Planetoceras retardum Hyatt, 1893). The new data are expanding the taxonomic composition of the genera Gzheloceras, Knightoceras, and Planetoceras and also clarify their geographical distribution. In these series are published original articles and monographs dealing with the collections and work of the Museum and setting forth newly ac- quired facts in the field of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies of each publication are distributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publication date of each paper recorded in the table of contents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related sub- jects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. -

Here we extend theory from non-equilibrium statistical physics to describe the previously unaccounted for fat-tailed form of fluctuations in marine inver- tebrate richness through the Phanerozoic. Using this theory, known as super- statistics, we show that the simple fact of heterogeneous rates of origination and extinction between clades and conserved rates within clades is sufficient to account for this fat-tailed form. -

Warszawa. Five heteromorph ammonite taxa belonging to the Nostoceratidae and the Diplomoceratidae are described from the Upper Turonian and Lower Coniacian of northern Germany and Saxony. The investigation serves the presentation of additional material of Hyphantoceras flexuosum, Neocrioceras paderbornense and Scalarites turoniense that are rarely documented in northern Germany and Saxony. Furthermore, one new species, Hyphantoceras ernsti sp. n., is introduced. One taxon is described in open nomenclature as nostoceratid gen. et sp. indet. Ammonite faunal dynamics across bio−events during the mid− and Late Cretaceous along the Russian Pacific coast. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 57 (4): 737–748. The present paper focuses on the evolutionary dynamics of ammonites from sections along the Russian Pacific coast dur− ing the mid− and Late Cretaceous. Changes in ammonite diversity (i.e., disappearance [extinction or emigration], appear− ance [origination or immigration], and total number of species present) constitute the basis for the identification of the main bio−events. The regional diversity curve reflects all global mass extinctions, faunal turnovers, and radiations. In the case of the Pacific coastal regions, such bio−events (which are comparatively easily recognised and have been described in detail), rather than first or last appearance datums of index species, should be used for global correlation. This is because of the high degree of endemism and provinciality of Cretaceous macrofaunas from the Pacific region in general and of ammonites in particular.
