HARTLEY WINTNEY FOOTBALL CLUB FOUNDED 1897 MEMBERS OF THE COMBINED COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE; SUBURBAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE; THE ALDERSHOT & DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE & THE SOUTHERN YOUTH LEAGUE. AFFILIATED TO THE HAMPSHIRE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and originally played in an area situated at Causeway Farm adjacent to the golf and cricket clubs, not too far from its present HQ. From stories told by the older members and from ancient records, it ap- pears that the village side competed and showed well against local opposition. The facilities were not, however, of the standards acceptable today. A horse trough or the pond was the only way to remove the heavy mud left from the sub-standard pitch. In 1953, the Club moved to its present ground in Green Lane, known as the Memorial Ground. A pavilion was erected and the team competed in the Basingstoke league be- fore joining the Aldershot league. In 1973, Glynn Howells was appointed manager and HWFC was put firmly on the local footballing map. In Glynn’s six year reign he steered the Club to three successive Aldershot Senior League titles and, on a night to remem- ber, to success in the Aldershot Senior Cup. In 1975, the facilities were upgraded, with a bar being incorporated in the pavilion. In 1978/79, after several seasons in the Aldershot League, Hartley joined the Combined Counties league. After the first couple of seasons in the CCL, the Club appointed Ian Bedford as manager and within the first three years of Ian’s reign, Hartley won the league title (season 82/83), Aldershot Senior Cup (80/81), and the George Allen Cup (81/82). They also finished runners-up in the league (80/81) and runners-up in the Al- dershot Senior Cup (81/82). During this period a new clubhouse was built and was opened by Peter Osgood. Ranked amongst the best facilities in the league, David Wil- loughby, the then secretary/treasurer, and Club President Bill Mitchell, devoted excep- tional hours in its embryonic stages. Since then the Club has installed floodlights and a 113 seater stand, and is indebted to the volunteer workers who keep the Club afloat. After promotion was won to the CCL Premier in 2007/08, 08/09 began poorly and ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under a new management team of Pete Gray and John Condon the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in 09/10, and 7th in season 10/11 under manager Louis King after Pete Gray had stepped down. In 2011/12, under a new management duo of Neville Roach and Scott Tarr, Hartley reached the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, defeating Southern League Bashley and Bideford on the way, and secured promotion from Div 1 of the CCL. Upheaval fol- lowed when Roach and Tarr left for Thatcham Town, taking most of the players with them, and after a very poor start to the 2012/13 season, Hartley’s place in the CCL Pre- mier was only secured after a truly remarkable second half of the season thanks to the new squad assembled by manager Ben Dillon and assistant Jason Minton.
