How To Attain Liberation From a False World? The Gnostic Myth of Sophia in Dark City (1998) Abstract In the second half of the 20th century, a fascinating revival of ancient Gnostic ideas in American popular culture could be observed. One of the major streams through which Gnostic ideas are transmitted is Hollywood cinema. Many works that emerged at the end of 1990s can be viewed through the ideas of ancient Gnostic systems: The Truman Show (1998), The Thirteenth Floor (1999), The Others (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001) or The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003). In this article, the author analyses Dark City (1998) and demonstrates that the story depicted in the film is heavily indebted to the Gnostic myth of Sophia. -

Signed: 2 A BSTRACT Problem: Academic study of religious healing has recognised its symbolic aspects, but has tended to frame practice as ritual, knowledge as belief. In contrast, studies of scientific psychiatry recognise that discipline as grounded in intellectual tradition and naturalistic empiricism. This asymmetry can be addressed if: (a) psychiatry is recognised as a form of “religious healing”; (b) religious healing can be shown to have an intellectual tradition which, although not naturalistic, is grounded in experience. Such an analysis may help to reveal why globalisation has meant the worldwide spread not only of modern scientific medicine, but of religious healing. An especially useful form of religious healing to contrast with scientific medicine is Sufi healing as practised by the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, which has become remarkable for its spread in the “West” and its adaptation to vernacular cultures. Research questions: (1) How is knowledge generated and transmitted in the Naqshbandi- Haqqani order? (2) How is healing understood and done in the Order? (3) How does the Order find a role in the modern world, and in the West in particular? Methods: Anthropological analysis of psychiatry as religious healing; review of previous studies of Sufi healing and the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order; ethnographic participant observation in the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, with a special focus on healing. -

Translation of a “Rumi Verse” by Idries Shah I was asked about the authenticity of a verse that was claimed by Idries Shah to have been composed by Jalaluddin Rumi. In the frontispiece of his book, Special Illumination (1977), Shah asserted (without citation of a source) that the following is by Rumi: “Gar tajalli-i-Khas Khahi surat-i-insan bebin Dhat-i-Haqqra ashkara andaruni khandan bebin If you want special illumination, look upon the human face: See clearly within laughter the Essence of Ultimate Truth” Jalaluddin Rumi” Then, he stated: “This important statement was made by Jalaluddin Rumi, one of the greatest of all Sufi masters…” The problem is that this verse is nowhere to be found in the works of Jalaluddin Rumi. It may be written in Persian more correctly (in accordance with the ramal poetic meter below), ﺮﮔ ﻠﺠﺗ ﯽٔ ﺎﺧص ﻮﺧ ا ﯽﻫ ﻮﺻ تر ِ ﻧاﺎنﺴ ﯿﺒﺑﻦ اذِت ﻖﺣ ار ارﺎﺷآﮑ ﻧاﺪر نآ ﻨﺧ ﺪ نا ﯿﺒﺑﻦ XoXX XoXX XoXX XoX XoXX XoXX XoXX XoX Shah made some transliteration errors: “Khas should be “khass,” and “andaruni khandan” should be “andarun-i-khandan”-- however, the poetic meter requires, “andar an khandan” As for his rendering into English, I would argue that, “If you want special illumination” is better translated as, “If you want (to witness) the manifestation of the elect (saint of God)”; that, “look upon the human face” is better translated, “see the form of an (illuminated) human”; that, “the Essence of Ultimate Truth” is better translated as, “the Essence of God”; and that, “within laughter” may also be translated, “in that laughter (of his)”. -

IntroductIon Godless People, Doubt, and Atheism Ruy Llera Blanes and Galina Oustinova-Stjepanovic Abstract: In the introduction to this special issue, we set the agenda for researching the aspirations and practices of godless people who seek to thin out religion in their daily lives. We reflect on why processes of disengagement from religion have not been adequately researched in anthropology. Locating this issue’s articles in the anthropological literature on doubt and atheism, we argue for the importance of a com- parative investigation to analyze people’s reluctance to pursue religion. Keywords: atheism, disbelief, disengagement from religion, doubt, god- less people, non-religion, unbelief Being Godless In the current climate of false prophecies of secularism and numerous theories of the resurgence of religions, it is rather unusual to study a way of disengag- ing from religion. A bulk of recent ethnographies tell stories about technologies of self and the adept cultivation of religious dispositions (Mahmood 2005), learning to discern God (Luhrmann 2007), and enacting divine presences in physical rituals, speech acts, dream visions, or materials (Engelke 2007). Ritu- als of presencing the transcendent, the divine, or the immaterial (e.g., Orsi 2005) and well-rehearsed arguments about the resilience of religious spiritu- alities in politics (Bubandt and van Beek 2012) seem to be the order of the day. Building on the growing interest in researching how people demarcate the boundaries of religion and what falls outside (Engelke 2012b, 2014), this special issue suggests that ‘being godless’ is an important empirical reality that encompasses processes, aspirations, and practices that purposefully or inad- vertently lead to the attenuation of one’s religious life. -
Karl Rahner on the Soul
Karl Rahner on the Soul Rev. Terrance W. Klein, S.T.D. Fordham University Karl Rahner rejects the notion that when Christians speak of a soul they are citing a surreptitious citizen of a realm that lies beyond or above science. For Rahner, the purpose of calling the soul the supernatural element of the human person is not to establish two spheres within one human being, but rather to attest to the sheer gratuity of our orientation toward God in Christ. When we use the word “spirit,” we philosophically reference our disposition over and against the world. When we use the word “soul,” we theologically assert the ultimate orientation of this spirit towards God. On Interpretation First, a word about interpretation, which is my task. One of the great Heidegger-inspired insights of twentieth century philosophy is that of the hermeneutical circle. Essentially the notion that we cannot simply seize the insights of another as though these were objects lying ready to hand. Rather, when we try to understand another, we become de facto interpreters, because we can’t help but approach the other in the light of our own preunderstanding. Hence, one cannot hope to approach a text without prejudice, which is always present. What one can do is to try to expose one’s own preunderstanding, so that, brought to light, its engagement with the text can be seen for what it is, a starting place in what is ultimately a conversation with the author. Gadamer taught us that what ultimately makes the conversation a fruitful dialogue, rather than a rapacious misreading, is a common tradition, the mutual questions and concerns that both the author and the interpreter share. -
Neo-Sufism in the 1960S: Idries Shah”
A Response to Prof. Mark Sedgwick: “Neo-Sufi sm in the 1960s: Idries Shah” Teruaki Moriyama Prof. Sedgwick discussed one of the most successful fi gures of the non-Islamic universal ‘Neo- Sufi sm’ movement in the 20th century Western societies, Idrīs Shāh. Prof. Sedgwick analyzed his life, books, promotion, and criticism against him. Through these analyses, Prof. Sedgwick considered the nature of his thoughts and activities, and concluded that his success, which prevailed over criticism from orientalist scholars, is ascribed to the following fi ve points: (1) he responded to the social needs for alternative religiosity in the Western societies, (2) it successfully combined Sufi sm, folk wisdom and other alternative religiosity as like Gurdjieff, (3) managed well to promot himself and his famous followers, (4) utilized publisher, and (5) validated himself by using names of universities and self-presentation as Grand Shaykh of Ṣūfīs originating from an exiled Afghan aristocratic family, which gave him the oriental exotic mystic atmosphere popular among Western people. Prof. Sedgwick’s paper provides a lot of knowledge on this outstanding Westernized non-Islamic ‘Neo-Ṣūfī’, Idrīs Shāh, who is not well known among Japanese researchers of Islamic studies. The Japanese academic society of Islamic studies has paid some attention to Western acceptance of Sufi sm as a sort of Oriental mystical spirituality, which is similar to Zen and Yoga, but not as a part of Islam religion. However, as yet, there is not much progress in Japan in serious research on ‘Neo- Sufi sm’ in the West. In addition to the limitation of knowledge and the underdevelopment of research, the difference in usage of the term of ‘Neo-Sufi sm’ might strengthen Japanese researchers’ impression that this lecture suggests something novel. -

Notes on Contributors Alberto Fabio Ambrosio read philosophy and theology at the Dominican College in Bologna and then undertook studies in Turkish language and civilization at Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg. In 2002 he completed an M.A. in Turkish, the subject of his thesis being the ritual of initiation into the Bektashi Order. In the same year he completed a second M.A. in theology with a paper on Hinduism and Sufism (the case of Bistami). In 2007 he finished his doctoral studies in modern history at the University of Paris (Sorbonne) on the subject of doctrines and practices of the Whirling Dervishes in the Ottoman Empire during the seventeenth century. His publications on Rumi and the Whirling Dervishes include: Les derviches tourneurs: doctrine, histoire et pratiques (2006) with Eve Pierunek and Thierry Zarcone, some articles on Ismail Rusuhi Ankaravi in Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée (2006), and contribu - tions to the Journal of the History of Sufism. An ordained Catholic priest, he is currently pursuing his research on Sufi culture and Rumi’s order of the Whirling Dervishes in Istanbul, where he has been residing since 2003. Robert (Abdul Hayy) Darr travelled and lived in Pakistan and Afghanistan during the 1980s. He was introduced to Sufism in the 1970s through the works of Idries Shah. By 1985 he left the Shah groups and began working in the Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan and making over - land trips inside Afghanistan. In the ensuing years, he befriended a number of Sufis in the region. Darr spent the next couple of decades studying traditional Sufism along with specialized disciplines such as abjad (Islamic numerology). -
