The main objective of the work was to establish a Plan for the Integrated Utilization of the Water Resources of the Hydrographic Basin of the Cunene River. As the elaboration of this Plan is a multi-disciplinary task, it was deemed preferable to grant independence of reporting on the work of each team that contributed to the final objective. First UA: 71/20 Index:AFR 12/2302/2020 Angola Date: 13 May 2020 URGENT ACTION ACTIVISTS FACING HARASSMENT AND INTIMIDATION Members of the non-governmental organisation Mission of Beneficence Agriculture of Kubando, Inclusive Technologies and Environment (MBAKITA) are facing harassment and intimidation, including death threats and attacks, in Cuando Cubango province, Southern Angola, because of their work for the defence and promotion of the rights of people from ethnic minorities in Southern Angola. I believe that these acts are being carried out with the aim of preventing members of MBAKITA from doing their work for the defence and promotion of the rights of people from ethnic minorities and denouncing corruption in the region. Unidentified armed men broke into the house of Pascoal Baptistiny, executive director of MBAKITA, on 17 and 23 April, and 11, 12 and 13 May. The men entered into Pascoal Baptistiny’s home, tied the hands of the two security guards and took several items of electronic equipment, including three computers, a video camera, memory cards and cell phones. These are only the most recent incidents in a series of attacks that Pascoal Baptistiny and MBAKITA activists have been enduring over the years. -

The Controversy of the Battle of Cassinga. Does the Media Provide the Final Answer?
JOERNAAL/JOURNAL BARNARD THE CONTROVERSY OF THE BATTLE OF CASSINGA. DOES THE MEDIA PROVIDE THE FINAL ANSWER? Leo Barnard* The military hostilities during the years 1966 to 1989 between the military forces of South Africa, the former South West Africa and Unita on the one hand, and Cuba, the Angolese forces and PLAN (People's Liberation Army for Namibia), the military wing of SWAPO, on the other hand, were popularly known as the Border or Bush War. Other authors referred to it as the battle for the independence of Namibia. During these hostilities, the Battle of Cassinga was one of the most decisive battles, especially in respect of military, political and social aspects. Twenty-five years after this battle, it is still of the utmost importance that it is seen in the right perspective. The controversy of the events will, despite the media's efforts to get to the truth, still for years hold the attention of historical researchers. The Battle of Cassinga took place against the above-mentioned background on 4 May 1978 between elements of the South African Air Force as well as a parachute force and elements of PLAN. Cassinga, formerly a mining village, was used by SWAPO as a basis and was situated about 300 km north of the Namibian border. In this paper the focus will mainly be on three principal moments: The controversy over the Battle of Cassinga, its interpretation by the media as well as probable reasons for the way in which the media handled it. From the moment that the Battle of Cassinga took place, it was shrouded in contro- versy. -

Page 1 of 36 “Operation 53” 5 – 22 March 2015 “Operation 53” In setting the scene, cognisance is taken of those who were there, by those who were not there, and in particular, in memory of those who never returned. 1 The Angolan Civil War The Angolan Civil War (Portuguese: Guerra Civil Angolana) was a major civil conflict in the African state of Angola, beginning in 1975 and continuing, with some interludes, until 2002. The war began immediately after Angola became independent from Portugal in November 1975. Prior to this, a decolonisation conflict, the Angolan War of Independence (1961–74), had taken place. The following civil war was essentially a power struggle between two former liberation movements, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). At the same time, the war served as a surrogate battleground for the Cold War and large-scale direct and indirect international involvement by opposing powers such as the Soviet Union, Cuba, South Africa and the United States was a major feature of the conflict. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angolan_Civil_War) 2 Operation Moduler Operation Moduler was a military operation by the South African Defence Force (SADF) during the South African Border War. It formed part of what has come to be called the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale. The Angolan objective was to advance south-east to attack the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) at Mavinga. The SADF objective was to protect UNITA by stopping that advance. The advance was halted with heavy Angolan casualties. -

Ground penetrating radar field evaluation in Angola Richard Walls U.S. Army RDECOM CERDEC, ATTN: AMSRD-CER-NV-CM-HD 10221 Burbeck Road, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060-5806 Todd Brown, Fred Clodfelter, Jeff Cours, Stephen Laudato, Steve Lauziere, Ajay Patrikar, Michael Poole, and Mike Price NIITEK Inc., 43671 Trade Center Place, Suite 124, Sterling, VA 20166 ABSTRACT Deminers around the globe are still using handheld metal detectors that lack the capability to distinguish mines from clutter, detect mines containing very little metal, or find mines buried at deeper depths. In the southern African country of Angola, many areas and roads are impassable due to the threat of anti-tank landmines. Some of these mines are undetectable using current metal detector technology. The US Army has funded the development of the NIITEK ground penetrating radar (GPR) for detection of anti-tank (AT) landmines. This radar detects metal and plastic mines as well as mines that are buried too deep for handheld metal detectors to find. The US Department of Defense Humanitarian Demining (HD) Research & Development Program focuses on developing, testing, demonstrating, and validating new technology for immediate use in humanitarian demining operations around the globe. The HD team provided funding and guidance to NIITEK Incorporated for development of a prototype system called Mine Stalker – a relatively light- weight, remote-controlled vehicle outfitted with the NIITEK GPR, detection algorithms, and a marking system. Individuals from the HD team, NIITEK Inc, and the non-governmental organization Meschen Gegen Minen (MgM) participated in a field evaluation of the Mine Stalker in Angola. The primary aim was to evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of the NIITEK GPR under field conditions. -
