He has previously taught at other African universities, such as the University of Ibadan and the University of Zululand, and has held research fellowships at the University of Texas in Austin, the WEB DuBois Institute at Harvard and at Emory University. In addition to being an author and poet, he was a member of the editorial advisory board of the Heinemann African Writers Series and was one of the founding editors of the electronic journal, Postcolonial Text, devoted to the study of literatures from the postcolonial world. His has published widely in the field of African literature and postcolonial studies. His current research interests include debates in world literature, postcolonial studies and decoloniality, animist epistemologies, modernity and difference. His recent publications explored issues of mapping, space and subjectivity within a colonial and postcolonial context, and issues of modernity and local agency. He is the author of Shadow and Dreams and Other Poems (1982), Animist Chants and Memorials (2017) and editor of Voices from the Fringe: An ANA Anthology of New Nigerian Poetry (1988). Itsuhiro Hazama is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the School of Global Social Sciences and Humanities, Nagasaki University, Japan. He has conducted research in north-eastern Uganda as well as western Kenya. His main interests are nomadic ethnography, studies on man–animal interaction and life history. His recent works include: ‘Potentials of African Pastoralism: Practice of Citizenship for Livelihood in East African Pastoral Society’, African Study Monographs, Supplementary issue Vol. 56 (2018), ‘Ugandan Pastoralists’ Everyday Histories of Gun Acquisition and State Violence’, History of Global Arms Transfer, Vol. 6 (2018), and Logics of Coexistence in Pastoralists’ World (Kyoto University Press 2015, in Japanese). Olivia Joanes completed her undergraduate degree at the University of the Western Cape, majoring in anthropology, psychology and history. She completed her honour’s degree in social anthropology at the University of Cape Town where her research focus was citizenship beyond constitutional provision in South Africa in a Cape Flats community, Bonteheuwel. She is currently pursuing her masters’ degree at the University of Cape Town in the hope of continuing the research undertaken for her honour’s degree. Minga Mbweck Kongo is a Ph.D. student in anthropology at the University of Cape Town. His master’s degree research focused on water scarcity in Cape Town. Minga first pursued the medical field and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Bio-medical Science) degree from the University of Lubumbashi in 2000. His doubtful questions about African development and his personal life experience led him to obtain an honour’s degree in social anthropology at the University of Cape Town. He completed a course in leadership at UCT in 2016 and held a scholarship from the Mastercard Foundation Scholar’s Program. He is busy finalising an autoethnographic book on undesirable mobility. Minga is multilingual and speaks nine African languages, including conversational Xhosa, as well as French. Msakha Mona is an artist, scholar and teacher with a very keen interest in the decolonisation project. In the research for his master’s degree, Msakha focused on curriculum development, and he continues to do work in this field. Msakha is currently working towards his PhD in African Studies at the University of Cape Town, with specific focus on the land distribution question. Zuziwe Msomi is a nGAP lecturer at the University of Cape in the African Studies Department. She completed her master’s degree on indigenous knowledge at Rhodes University, and is currently pursuing her PhD on whiteness. Claire-Anne Lester is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and has an MPhil in Justice and Transformation from the University of Cape Town. Broad research interests include transitional and economic justice, political economy, discourse and ideology. Her current research focus is the function of official ‘truth- seeking’ commissions of inquiry that investigate state violence in the suppression of labour uprisings. A recent co-authored publication addresses the politics of transformation in South African Universities, ‘Falling Rainbows Anatomy of a False Choice: Student Voice.’ New Agenda: South African Journal of Social and Economic Policy 2017, No. 64 (2017): 36–38. Gaku Moriguchi is part-time lecturer at Gakushūin University, Tōyō University, Asia University and Tokyo University of Agriculture. He majored in social anthropology with particular focus on development and urbanity in Uganda and East Africa. Marlon Swai is a hip-hop artist from Cape Town with a background in spoken word and graphic design. His research and dissertation evaluates how the youth movement forms the backbone of Hip Hop in South Africa, and how it simultaneously supplements and critiques formal education by promoting the kind of politicisation and awareness raising that is indispensable to various kinds of social justice work. In addition to researching the pedagogical approaches within resistive art, Marlon’s academic interests expand to hip hop’s potential for galvanising Pan-African collaboration towards social justice, specifically with regard to issues around gender discrimination in relation to masculinity, internalised oppression and the politics of representation. His curiosity for the workings of cross-cultural imagination and communication is fed by his experience of spending the last eight years in Brooklyn, Harlem and the Bronx where he supported immigrant and refugee youth in their acquisition of English language and literacy, as well as their socio-emotional adjustment to life in the United States. Marlon’s future interests include the flipped classroom in the African context, youth activist contributions to critical literacies, the political economy of small-scale environmental sustainability work and a continued exploration in developing pedagogy for healthy masculinities. He currently lectures in the anthropology section of the AXL School at the University of Cape Town. Noriko Tahara is Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shitennoji University. Her book, Episteme of Inclusion and Release: Practices of Everyday Life with Special Reference to Asante, Ghana (Sagano Syoin, 2007, in Japanese) is the unique ethnography presenting rich description based on her long-term and sympathetic fieldwork in the village in Ghana. Since 1998, her interest has extended to multi-ethnicity, multi-nationality and multi-identity embodied intensively in the lives of peoples in a small village of Lake Albert, Uganda. Ayanda Manqoyi is a PhD student of anthropology at the University of California, Davis, in the United States of America. With an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) in Sustainable Minerals Development, his research work focused on black youth entrepreneurs in disadvantaged mining towns. His current research interest is on ageing in cities in South Africa. This research is an extension of his interest to understand how family obligation, known in South Africa as ‘black tax’, mediates when one ascends to institutionalised black middle class. He recently published a chapter titled ‘Researching Cannibalising Obligations in Post-apartheid South Africa’ in an edited volume by Francis Nyamnjoh under the book title Eating and being Eaten: Cannibalism as Food for Thought. Anye-Nkwenti Nyamnjoh is a PhD candidate in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge, where he is currently working on themes related to epistemic decolonisation. He holds an MPhil in Justice and Transformation from the University of Cape Town, and co- authored Moral Eyes: Youth and Justice in Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and South Africa (2018). Francis B. Nyamnjoh is a Cameroonian national currently working in South Africa. He joined the University of Cape Town in August 2009 as Professor of Social Anthropology from the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) in Dakar, Senegal, where he served as Head of Publications from July 2003 to July 2009. He is a B1 rated Professor and Researcher by the South African National Research Foundation (NRF), has been a Fellow of the Cameroon Academy of Science since August 2011, a fellow of the African Academy of Science since December 2014, a fellow

At present the Province head quarters is at Mtoni Kijichi, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Now the Province has 52 professed members of whom 40 are from East Africa and 12 are from India.

Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, 21 September 2016 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary entanglements between two cosmo-ontological systems within one African community. The first system is the indigenous cosmology of the Acholi community of Pajok, South Sudan; the other is the world religion of evangelical Protestantism. Christianity has been in the region around 100 years, and although the current religious field represents a significant shift from earlier compositions, the continuing effects of colonial and early missionary encounters have had significant impact. This thesis seeks to understand the cosmological transformations involved in all these encounters. This thesis provides the first in-depth account of South Sudanese Acholi – a group almost entirely absent from the ethnographic record. However, its largest contributions come through wider theoretical and ethnographic insights gained in attending to local Acholi cosmological, ontological, and experiential orientations. These contributions are: firstly, the connection of Melanesian ideas of agency and personhood to Africa, demonstrating not only the relational nature of Acholi personhood but an understanding of agency acknowledging nonhuman actors; secondly, a demonstration of the primarily relational nature of local personhood whereby Acholi and evangelical persons and relations are similarly structured; and thirdly, an argument that, in South Sudan, both systems are ultimately about how people organise the moral fabric of their society.

Good players of these xylophones now seem to be extremely scarce, and they are rarely performed in Kampala. Both instruments, although brought from villages in Buganda, formed part of a great musical tradition associated with the Kabaka’s palace. After 1966, when the palace was overrun by government forces and the kingdom abolished, the royal musicians were cut off from their traditional role. It is not clear how many of the former palace amadinda players still survive. Mr Kyobe, at Namaliri Trading Centre and his brothers Mr Wilson Sempira Kinonko and Mr Edward Musoke, Kikuli village, are still fine players with extensive knowledge of the amadinda xylophone repertoire, and the latter have been teaching their skills in Kikuli. As for the akadinda, P.Cooke reports (1996) that a 1987 visit found it was still being taught and played in the two villages where the palace players used to live A xylophone which has become popular in wedding music ensembles is sometimes also known by the name amadinda, but this is smaller, often with only 9 keys, and is played by only a single player in a style called ssekinomu. Otherwise, xylophones are used at teaching institutions in Kampala, but they are rarely performed. Indeed, it is difficult to find a well-made xylophone anywhere in Kampala.

    Sub–Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program The World Bank and Economic Commission for Africa SSATP Working Paper No 12 Case Study on Intermediate Means of Transport Bicycles and Rural Women in Uganda Christina Malmberg Calvo February 1994 Environmentally Sustainable Development Division Africa Region The World Bank Foreword One of the objectives of the Rural Travel and Transport Project (RTTP) is to recommend approaches for improving rural transport, including the adoption of intermediate transport technologies to facilitate goods movement and increase personal mobility. For this purpose, comprehensive village-level travel and transport surveys (VLTTS) and associated case studies have been carried out. The case studies focus on the role of intermediate means of transport (IMT) in improving mobility and the role of transport in women's daily lives. The present divisional working paper is the second in a series reporting on the VLTTS. The first working paper focussed on travel to meet domestic needs (for water, firewood, and food processing needs), and on the impact on women of the provision of such facilities as water supply, woodlots, fuel efficient stoves and grinding mills. The present case study documents the use of bicycles in eastern Uganda where they are a means of generating income for rural traders and for urban poor who work as bicycle taxi-riders. It also assesses women's priorities regarding interventions to improve mobility and access, and the potential for greater use of bicycles by rural women and for women's activities. The bicycle is the most common IMT in SSA, and it is used to improve the efficiency of productive tasks, and to serve as a link between farms and villages, nearby road networks, and market towns.

    African Study Monographs, 34 (1): 1–25, March 2013 1 MONOLINGUALISM VIA MULTILINGUALISM: A CASE STUDY OF LANGUAGE USE IN THE WEST UGANDAN TOWN OF HOIMA Shigeki KAJI Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Kyoto University ABSTRACT Multilingualism is one of the most salient features of language use in Africa and, at first sight, Uganda appears to be just one example of this practice. However, as Uganda has no lingua franca that is widely used by its entire population, questions about how people cope with multilingualism arise. Answers to such questions can be found in the fact that people are able to create a monolingual state in a given area because everyone is multilingual. That is, people speak their own language in their own domain and speak other peoples’ languages when they go to the latter’s domains. This conclusion emerged from interviews conducted with 100 inhabitants of Hoima city in western Uganda, an area primarily inhabited by the Nyoro people. The linguistic situation in Hoima provides a valuable case study of what can happen in the absence of a fully developed lingua franca and can contribute to broader discussions of language use in Africa. The main themes of my research relate to the grammatical and lexical characteristics of little-known languages in the area.     Ethnocentrism and National Elections in Uganda John Paul Kasujja, Anthony Muwagga Mugagga The paper focuses on ethnocentrism as an active factor for national election turmoil in Uganda. The bewitchment of the military by ethnocentric virus, the subsequent coups and overthrows, to the military regimes and dictatorships by successive presidents since 1966, the 1980, 1996, 2001 and 2006 presidential elections, can account for ethnocentric tendencies in the Pearl of Africa. Thereafter, the paper discusses the 1996, 2001 and 2006 general elections held in Uganda before propounding implications for the country’s future. Keywords : Ethnocentrism, Politics and development, Elections Introduction Uganda is in the easterly region of the African continent with a diverse ethnic composition. It borders Kenya in the East, Democratic republic of Congo in the west, Southern Sudan in the north and Tanzania in the south, Ssekamwa (1994). The area has attracted almost every ethnic group for settlement and business, and this has sensitized ethnocentrism among the settlers. This trait has been practiced in the politics of the state especially in national elections. Ethnocentrism exists in most countries across borders, but how it affects the political endeavours of a state with multi-ethnic populations vary. For the case of Uganda, ethnic differences make a significant impact on political activity, like national elections. The awareness of these differences has been referred to as “tribalism”, or ethnicity. The term ethnocentrism is a commonly used word in circles where ethnicity, inter ethnic relations and similar social issues are of concern.
