THE USE OF MULTIPLE STOPS IN WORKS FOR SOLO VIOLIN BY JOHANN PAUL VON WESTHOFF (1656-1705) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO GERMAN POLYPHONIC WRITING FOR A SINGLE INSTRUMENT Beixi Gao, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2017 APPROVED: Julia Bushkova, Major Professor Paul Leenhouts, Committee Member Susan Dubois, Committee Member Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John W. Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Vice Provost of the Toulouse Graduate School Gao, Beixi. The Use of Multiple Stops in Works for Solo Violin by Johann Paul Von Westhoff (1656-1705) and Its Relationship to German Polyphonic Writing for a Single Instrument. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2017, 32 pp., 19 musical examples, bibliography, 46 titles. Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth- century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project focuses on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time is included in this document.

FREE ADMISSION Dear friends, Last fall, Third Coast Baroque’s debut series ¡Sarabanda! focused on examining the African and Latin American folk music roots of the sarabande. Today, we will be following the paths of the chaconne, passacaglia and other ostinato rhythms – with origins similar to the sarabande – as they spread across Europe during the 17th century. With this program that we are calling Groove!, we present those intoxicating rhythms in the fashion and flavor of the different countries where they gained popularity. The great European composers wrote masterpieces using the rhythms of these ancient dances to create immortal pieces of art, but their weight and significance is such that we tend to forget where their origins lie. Bach, Couperin, and Purcell – to name only a few – wrote music for highly sophisticated institutions. Still, through these dance rhythms, they were searching for something similar to what the more ancient civilizations had been striving to attain: a connection to the spiritual world.

  • Opera Olimpiade
OPERA OLIMPIADE Pietro Metastasio’s L’Olimpiade, presented in concert with music penned by sixteen of the Olympian composers of the 18th century VENICE BAROQUE ORCHESTRA Andrea Marcon, conductor Romina Basso Megacle Franziska Gottwald Licida Karina Gauvin Argene Ruth Rosique Aristea Carlo Allemano Clistene Nicholas Spanos Aminta Semi-staged by Nicolas Musin SUMMARY Although the Olympic games are indelibly linked with Greece, Italy was progenitor of the Olympic operas, spawning a musical legacy that continues to resound in opera houses and concert halls today. Soon after 1733, when the great Roman poet Pietro Metastasio witnessed the premiere of his libretto L’Olimpiade in Vienna, a procession of more than 50 composers began to set to music this tale of friendship, loyalty and passion. In the course of the 18th century, theaters across Europe commissioned operas from the Olympian composers of the day, and performances were acclaimed in the royal courts and public opera houses from Rome to Moscow, from Prague to London. Pieto Metastasio In counterpoint to the 2012 Olympic games, Opera Olimpiade has been created to explore and celebrate the diversity of musical expression inspired by this story of the ancient games. Research in Europe and the United States yielded L’Olimpiade manuscripts by many composers, providing the opportunity to extract the finest arias and present Metastasio’s drama through an array of great musical minds of the century. Andrea Marcon will conduct the Venice Baroque Orchestra and a cast of six virtuosi singers—dare we say of Olympic quality—in concert performances of the complete libretto, a succession of 25 spectacular arias and choruses set to music by 16 Title page of David Perez’s L’Olimpiade, premiered in Lisbon in 1753 composers: Caldara, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Leo, Galuppi, Perez, Hasse, Traetta, Jommelli, Piccinni, Gassmann, Mysliveek, Sarti, Cherubini, Cimarosa, and Paisiello.
