    NYU Madrid ARTH-UA.9417 Art and Social Movements in Spain 1888- 1939 Instructor Information ● Name: Julia Doménech ● Office hours: Tuesdays: 7.30-8.30pm ● Email address: [email protected] Course Description This survey examines the major artists and institutions that shaped the development of modern art in Spain from 1888, the date of Barcelona's Universal Exposition, to the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939. The course takes as its working model the complex question of art's relation to social movements, including: the rising tides of cultural and political nationalism in the Basque and Catalan regions; the Colonial Disaster of 1898 and the question of national regeneration; the impact of fin-del-siglo anarchist and workers’ movements; the rise of authoritarian politics with the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera; and the ideological struggles and social violence unleashed during the Spanish Civil War. Class sessions examine the complex roles played by some of Spain's most prominent artists and architects -- Antoni Gaudí, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Luis Buñuel, Josep Lluís Sert, and Salvador Dalí -- and their multivalent responses to modernization, political instability, and social praxis. ● Co-requisite or prerequisite: N/A ● Class meeting days and times: Tuesdays 4.30-7.20 pm Desired Outcomes Upon Completion of this Course, students will be able to: ● Providing students with a working knowledge of the development of modern art in Spain. El desenllaç, que convertí el recinte en un conjunt orgànic, fou degut al fet que va ésser encarregat a quatre persones que tenien una extraordinària sensibilitat i que feren amb el tema un portentós joc de mans. El Poble Espanyol va ésser plantejat essencialment a partir d’una preocupació estètica profunda, intel·ligent i refinada. Els quatre professionals varen ser dos arquitectes: Ramon Reventós Farrarons i Francesc Folguera i Grassi; un pintor: Xavier Nogués i Casas; i un enginyer industrial: Miquel Utrillo i Morlius. Uns homes que, moguts per la il·lusió de crear un vertader poble que fos una síntesi de la varietat i complexitat d’Espanya, van realitzar diferents viatges per la península per a recollir material iconogràfic. Durant el recorregut, feren centenars de fotografies, anotacions i dibuixos que els va permetre escollir el que millor s’adaptava a la idea que havien de plasmar. Una noció aproximada de la importància que van tenir aquests viatges ho dóna el número de poblacions que els turistes van visitar: un total de mil sis-centes.

Fue construido para la Exposición Universal de Barcelona de 1929 y todavía hoy pervive como centro de distribución de artesanía popular, así como espacio de ocio y cultura. Para llevar a cabo la realización del proyecto del Poble, se realizaron una serie de viajes por España entre 1927 y 1928 donde se tomaron centenares de fotografías, notas y apuntes en libretas de viaje, que hasta hoy han permanecido ocultas. El tema central de la presente investigación es la demostración de que los viajes fueron esenciales para el resultado final del proyecto; sin los cuales ese hubiese sido muy distinto. Los viajes le confirieron al Poble una complejidad con la que superar la generalizada esquematización de proyectos análogos. Para conseguir nuestro objetivo se ha llevado a cabo la recopilación, ordenación y análisis del material que se recogió durante los viajes, extraído de fondos públicos y privados, incluso el descubrimiento de un material inédito: las libretas de viaje, que nos han permitido profundizar en el making off del Poble Espanyol.
