In 1705 the first resident of what is now Lambertville, John Holcombe, purchased 350 acres. In 1724 he built the stone house on North Main Street that became known as Washington’s Headquarters. It is still a private resi- dence and one of many on the city’s charming streets that are lined with well-pre- served federal townhouses and Victorian homes. Lambertville sits along the Delaware River and is connected to historic New Hope, Pennsylvania by a walkable bridge. A restored 19th-century train depot houses Lambertville Station, a popular waterside restaurant and a cozy inn. It boasts historic bars, acclaimed restaurants, world-class spas and salons, vintage shops, riverside hotels, Victorian architecture, and outdoor summer activities. Spend a day or weekend in Lambertville and enjoy fine dining, shop for an- tiques and fine art, browse unique gift shops, or simply take in the beautiful views of the Delaware River. NEW HOPE, PENNSYLVANIA Located along the route of the Old York Road and the banks of the Delaware River, the picturesque village of New Hope, Pennsylvania has been named one of the “Top 14 Cities for a First Date.” But there is something for everyone in New Hope. Visitors can enjoy the scenic countryside, family fun, and specialty shopping. It is a small town destination for tourists, antique collectors, theater audiences, and art aficionados. The Logan Inn in New Hope is the oldest continuously running inn in Bucks County. Established in 1727, it offered its services to George Washington and his men. New Hope’s history is grounded in its early days as a mill town, with its economy being carried in the first two centuries by transportation and water power innovation and its role in the American Revolution. When the canal gave way to the railroad, a new era of the arts was ushered in. A group of artists, notably William L. Lathrop, Daniel Garber, and Edward W. Redfield settled along the river. This new colony of artists became known as the New Hope School. In 1939, a group interested in the arts purchased an old gristmill and transformed it into the Bucks County Playhouse. The Playhouse, which was once home to many prominent actors and actresses, is now experiencing a fabulous resurgence. Come to New Hope to spend the day, the weekend, or more and enjoy fine dining, one of a kind shopping, world class shows, and the beautiful Delaware River. 6 delawarerivertowns.com THE HERALD Serving Bucks, Hunterdon and surrounding counties Your Source for BUCKS COUNTY Delaware HERALD River Towns News 2 1 5 - 9 4 - 0 9 6 5 7 6 1 Lower York Road Lahaska, PA 8 9 3 1 buckscountyherald.com The Official Delaware River Towns Chamber of Commerce Visitors Guide 7 Bucks County’s Favorite Destination for Shopping and Celebrating! 60+ SHOPS | OPEN 363 DAYS 4 MILES SOUTH OF NEW HOPE ROUTES 202 & 263, LAHASKA, PA | 2157944000 PEDDLERSVILLAGE.COM/SHOP 8 delawarerivertowns.com Accommodations d POINTS OF INTERST R Retail er iv Restaurants Phillips Mill Rd R 1 d A Mano Galleries R k Professional Services 29 e 2 Begley, Carlin & Mandio, LLP e 202 r C Theaters/Entertainment 3 Bell’s Tavern n e k Galleries/Museums u 4 Blue Raccoon Home Furnishings a x e l 5 A Bucks County Children’s Museum 32 6 Bucks County Playhouse 7 Callaway Henderson Sotheby’s r Lambertville C International n e H k d o R s l u itu c 8 Clarion Inn & Suites a 29 T o 18 x m le Dr nt b A a e 9 Debra Forman, Es . e P rg W P Se E N a ll y 10 Dig Yoga N E Cherry H t 202 W N N C eath we 179 o S 11 U t Green Building Center - N d S D r Lambertville Y J 14 R n c E D L i Public d k R o M r V 12 n Heart of the Home R Bog S School el o A p Y E 17 s a h N Ave ip R r Y tt C l Arne ll d 13 e e i R o Heath’s Service, Inc. • Bloody Bound Brook & the Lost Hessian
by Bob Mayers It would not be until the end of World War II that a diary was rediscovered that shed new light on the importance of the Battle of Bound Brook. t dawn on Palm Sunday, April 13, 1777, in the third year of the American Revolution, a Hessian captain with his company of thirty Jaegers Afaltered and fell as intense musket and cannon fire tore into them from an American redoubt. They were fearlessly attempting a frontal assault over a stone bridge that crossed the Bound Brook at a New Jersey riverbank hamlet of the same name. The Hessians—German mercenaries—were the most deadly light infantry in the world at the time. These elite special forces were feared by their American opponents. Armed with short carbine- type German hunting rifles, they dressed in green and brown to blend in with their surroundings, unlike the blazing red wool uniforms of their British allies. That, morning the small unit of Jaegers was the advanced party of a British force of 4,000 men. These Redcoat invaders were attempting a surprise attack on an exposed front line outpost on the Raritan River.
