Other types of affordable housing Shared Ownership Properties Shared ownership is a part buy - part rent scheme, backed by the Government. It’s a way to buy a share in a property and increase the share in the future as your circumstances allow. You’ll need to have a minimum level of income/savings depending on the value of the home you want to buy. Discount Sale Properties Another affordable home ownership option is discount sale. Properties are discounted by a fixed percentage - usually 30% or 40% from open market value to make them affordable to households with a local connection. The property remains discounted for future sales. Therefore you still require a substantial deposit for the mortgage. There are some discount sale properties on most new build sites.
