Resumo: Conhecer a acarifauna e a entomofauna de um habitat agrícola é um dos passos fundamentais para se conseguir uma protecção integrada e sustentável das culturas. Neste trabalho apresenta-se uma lista das espécies de artrópodes encon- tradas em quatro culturas frutícolas da ilha Terceira (bananeiras, citrinos, macieiras e pessegueiros). Os indivíduos foram cap- turados com recurso a três métodos de amostragem: i) recolha directa das folhas e/ou ramos; ii) técnica dos batimentos; iii) armadilhas Malaise. No total foram estabelecidas 679 morfoespécies, tendo-se identificado 218 morfoespécies até ao nível de género e/ou espécie. Destacam-se 17 espécies que foram encontradas pela primeira vez para a ilha Terceira durante esta amostragem, 12 que contituíam novidades faunísticas para os Açores e uma espécie que foi citada pela primeira vez para Por- tugal. Finalmente discute-se a importância deste estudo para trabalhos futuros, e a necessidade de desenvolver mais listas faunísticas para estas e outras culturas. NOTES 35 Some notable British barkfly (Psocoptera) observations Studies by the authors of the barkflies, or outdoor Psocoptera – preferred alternative name to barklice proposed by Alexander (2003. Psocid News. 3: 1-2) – occurring in various parts of Britain has resulted in several noteworthy finds. These previously unpublished records include the discovery of two species new to Britain, species not previously recorded out-of-doors and new vice-county records for other notable species. Family Trogiidae Lepinotus patruelis Pearman A single female specimen was found by B. Saville at North Merchiston Cemetery, Edinburgh (O.S. grid reference NT 234723 – VC 83) on 26.vii.2004. The specimen was caught while searching the surface and loose bark of deciduous tree trunks. W. R. Dolling obtained three female specimens by sieving tidal debris in a saltmarsh at Stone Creek, Yorkshire (TA 2318 – VC 61) on 7.ix.2004. The identification of all specimens was confirmed by C. Lienhard of the Geneva Natural History Museum. These finds appear to be the first outdoor records reported in Britain. Family Liposcelididae Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel A female specimen was sieved from a pile of wood chips under trees at Wheldrake Woods, Yorkshire (SE 6647 – VC 61) by W. R. Dolling on 7.viii.2004. The identification of the specimen was determined by C. Lienhard. Although widely distributed as a domestic species this appears to be the first outdoor record in Britain. Family Caeciliusidae Epicaecilius pilipennis (Lienhard) W.R. Dolling found one male specimen in pine needle litter at the foot of an isolated pine in a clearing on Allerthorpe Common, Yorkshire (SE 7647) – VC 61) on 24.iv.2004. -

15 Aspects of the Biogeography of North American Psocoptera (Insecta) Edward L. Mockford School of Biological Sciences, Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois, USA 1. Introduction The group under consideration here is the classic order Psocoptera as defined in the Torre- Bueno Glossary of Entomology (Nichols & Shuh, 1989). Although this group is unquestionably paraphyletic (see Lyal, 1985, Yoshizawa & Lienhard, 2010), these free-living, non-ectoparasitic forms are readily recognizable. In defining North America for this chapter, I adhere closely to Shelford (1963, Fig. 1-9), but I shall use the Tropic of Cancer as the southern cut-off line, and I exclude the Antillean islands. Although the ranges of many species of Psocoptera extend across the Tropic of Cancer, the inclusion of the tropical areas would involve the comparison of relatively well- studied regions and relatively less well-studied regions. The North America Psocoptera, as defined above, comprises a faunal list of 397 species in 90 genera and 27 families ( Table 1) . Comparisons are made here with several other relatively well-studied faunas. The psocid fauna of the Euro-Mediterranean region, summarized by Lienhard (1998) with additions by the same author (2002, 2005, 2006) and Lienhard & Baz (2004) has a fauna of 252 species in 67 genera and 25 families. As would be expected, nearly all of the families are shared between the two regions. The only two families not shared are Ptiloneuridae and Dasydemellidae, which reach North America but not the western Palearctic. Ptiloneuridae has a single species and Dasydemellidae two in North America. The rather large differences at the generic and specific levels are probably due to the much greater access that these insects have for invasion of North America from the tropics than invasion from the tropics in the Western Palearctic. -

Diversity and distribution of arthropods in native forests of the Azores archipelago. Arquipélago. Life and Marine Sciences 25: 01-30. Since 1999, our knowledge of arthropods in native forests of the Azores has improved greatly. Under the BALA project (Biodiversity of Arthropods of Laurisilva of the Azores), an extensive standardised sampling protocol was employed in most of the native forest cover of the Archipelago. Additionally, in 2003 and 2004, more intensive sampling was carried out in several fragments, resulting in nearly a doubling of the number of samples collected. A total of 6,770 samples from 100 sites distributed amongst 18 fragments of seven islands have been collected, resulting in almost 140,000 specimens having been caught. Overall, 452 arthropod species belonging to Araneae, Opilionida, Pseudoscorpionida, Myriapoda and Insecta (excluding Diptera and Hymenoptera) were recorded. Altogether, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Araneae and Lepidoptera comprised the major proportion of the total diversity (84%) and total abundance (78%) found. Endemic species comprised almost half of the individuals sampled. Most of the taxonomic, colonization, and trophic groups analysed showed a significantly left unimodal distribution of species occurrences, with almost all islands, fragments or sites having exclusive species. Araneae was the only group to show a strong bimodal distribution. Only a third of the species was common to both the canopy and soil, the remaining being equally exclusive to each stratum. Canopy and soil strata showed a strongly distinct species composition, the composition being more similar within the same stratum regardless of the location, than within samples from both strata at the same location. -

ISSN 1348–1770 Sapporo, Japan Psocid News The Psocidologists’ Newsletter No. 4 (Feb. 17, 2003) Dypsocus coleoptratus RECORDING THE NATIVE PSOCOPTERA OF BRITAIN AND IRELAND - AN INTRODUCTION TO KEITH ALEXANDER - Keith Alexander (UK) My interest in Psocoptera began in 1979 when I noticed an Ectopsocus briggsi (or was it E. petersi?) in my sweep net when I was out recording invertebrates for my employer The National Trust in Devon. I had not knowingly seen a Psocid before and had to start from scratch with a key to insect groups! I think it was Michael Chinery's Collins Guide to the Insects of Britain and Northern Europe that got me started and then I acquired a copy of the Royal Entomological Society's Handbook (New, T. R., 1974, Psocoptera. Handbk. Id. Br. Insects I (7)). From then on I took what has to be described as a fairly casual interest, keeping specimens rather selectively, more on whim than anything else - I was employed to identify the nature conservation interests of National Trust properties at the time and Psocoptera are too little known to contribute much - if anything. Living in Gloucestershire, with its active field recording tradition maintained by the Gloucestershire Naturalists' Society, I was eventually invited to act as County Recorder for Psocoptera, from about 1990. There must be very few English counties with their own official Psocoptera Recorder! There was no county list at the time although an earlier entomologist - Bob George - had started compiling records, mainly of warehouse adventives, in the 1950s and 1960s. His dusty old Psocoptera file was ceremonially passed to me from the Society's archives one day. -

This was a problem that I was well aware of (and is, of course, also the case for most insect groups) but seeing it in black and white inspired me to seriously try to think of a solution. But what to do?! A good number of years ago, when I was involved with the Scottish Wildlife Trust, I was asked to come up with an idea for a faunal project for trainee surveyors. I suggested a seasonal study of the psocids found on four yew trees at an estate near Edinburgh. -

Introduction Unfortunately, a comprehensive documentation of authorities for family-group names is lacking for psocids. This lack of information is particularly problematic in a period when phylogenetic research results in the frequent propositions of new classifications (e. g. Yoshizawa & Johnson, 2014; Yoshizawa et al., 2014; Yoshizawa, 2016). According to the principle of coordination applied to family-group names (ICZN Article 36) each name can be used in all ranks of the family-group with the same authorship and date, the rank-specific suffixes being -ina (subtribe), -ini (tribe), -inae (subfamily), -idae (family) and -oidea (superfamily). All family-group names of the suborder Trogiomorpha that we were able to retrieve from the literature are listed here, including names based on fossil genera clearly assignable to Psocoptera (see Mockford et al., 2013). -

The male karyotype and testis structure of Atlantopsocus adustus (Hagen, 1865), Trichopsocus clarus (Banks, 1908) and Trichopsocus brincki Badonnel, 1963 from Madeira have been studied for the first time. All species display 2n = 17 (16A + X). In prophase cells of A. adustus and T. brincki a single nucleolus attached to one of the autosomal bivalents has been revealed. A. adustus has testes with three seminal follicles each, while the testes of T. clarus and T. brincki consist of one seminal follicle. The data on the two last species represent the first karyological data for the family Trichopsocidae. Key words: Psocoptera, Madeira Island, karyotype, testes, endemic species.
