SELAH NEIGHBORHOOD HOMELESS COALITION

MAY 2018 WHAT WE NEED The SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition is a group of community members who engage with people experiencing homelessness in our neighborhoods. We currently visit encampments in Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz, Atwater Village, East Hollywood, and Glassell Park. We meet for engage- ments every other Sunday.

As we’ve been doing these engagements, we’ve uncovered some critical needs our homeless neigh- bors have. When SELAH volunteers go out into our neighborhoods to engage with our homeless neighbors, we try to ask everyone we speak with what services they need the most.

We get a lot of different responses. SERVICE CENTER REPORT SELAHNHC.COM 2 VITAL SERVICES Here are some of the resources we would like to see in Service Centers available on a walk-in basis. All of these services are needed in every neighborhood, but they do not all need to be provided in the same location.

Our homeless neighbors currently have no walk-in access to any of these services within several miles. During the winter, the closest place they can go when it rains is Highland Park, three bus rides away. ¾ of the year, there are no walk-in shelters except in Skid Row.

Case managers Bathroom facilities, including showers

A nurse practitioner A “cool-down” room for conflict mediation

Laundry services An address where people can receive mail

Storage facilities Temporary shelter beds, tents, and other membrane structures A safe place to park cars for the night

We believe that Service Centers, including safe parking sites, stor- age facilities, case management services, and more, within walking distance of homeless encampments in each of our neighborhoods would be an invaluable asset for getting individuals off the street, especially the newly homeless who often aren’t sure where to turn for help.

SERVICE CENTER REPORT SELAHNHC.COM 3 IDENTIFYING SITES As we were putting together our list of potential sites for Service Centers, we looked for locations that fell into a few different categories:properties for lease, vacant lots, underused parking lots, city- owned properties and motels that could be converted.

For every type of site, we prioritized locations on major bus and rail lines, and locations within walking distance of many of the encampments in our neighborhoods.

We solicited responses from neighbors and on social media, consulted real estate databases, and personally scouted our neighborhoods.

What we came up with was a list of 85 promising sites that could provide many of the services listed in this report.
