European Journal of Molecular & Clinical Medicine ISSN 2515-8260 Volume 07, Issue 05, 2020 Contributions of Women’s To 20th Century Assamese Novel Gyanshree Dutta Research Scholar, Department of Assamese, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Assam, India Abstract A healthy society is being formed by the equal efforts of men and women. Ethno-National Conflict and Crisis in Anuradha Sarma Pujari’S Novel Mereng
Research Journal of English Language and Literature (RJELAL) A Peer Reviewed (Refereed) International Journal Vol.7.Issue 1. 2019 Impact Factor 6.8992 (ICI) http://www.rjelal.com; (Jan-Mar) Email:[email protected] ISSN:2395-2636 (P); 2321-3108(O) RESEARCH ARTICLE ETHNO-NATIONAL CONFLICT AND CRISIS IN ANURADHA SARMA PUJARI’S NOVEL MERENG Dr BHUBANESWAR DEKA Associate Professor & Head Department of English, Pandu College Guwahati, Assam (Affiliated to Gauhati University) E-mail: [email protected] https://doi.org/10.33329/rjelal.7119.202 ABSTRACT Anuradha Sharma Pujari (born 1963--) a journalist by profession, is an Assamese author of more than eleven novels, four short story collections and more than six autobiographical non-fictions. Editor of both Sadin (an Assamese weekly) and Satsori (an Assamese monthly literary magazine) Sharma Pujari is well-known for her deep persuasion towards historical causes, socio-political tussles, modernity and humanity. She begins her fictional series with Hridoy Ek Bigyapon (The Heart's a Showbiz) in 1998. Nahoror Niribili Cha (Shadows of Nahor), 2005, Mereng, 2010, Son Harinor Chekur (Race of the golden deer), 2012, Nil Prajapati (Blue Butterflies), 2013, Jalachabi (2014) are some of her ground breaking fictions. This paper critically analyses Sharma Pujari’s Mereng (2010) as an account of a strong woman, Indira Miri and on modern society and its redundant systems. It also unearths postcolonial India’s history in the north-eastern context. The pathetic upshot on the easy-going tribal communities of the region arising out of India’s governance since independence is also focus of the paper.. The paper, while making a deep probe into the theme of the work, examines how the novelist portrays social realism in the post-independence periods in Assam linking to Indian context through characters and situations. -

Feminist Consciousness, Empowerment and Identity: Contextualizing Chandraprabha Saikiani in Contemporary Assam
Proceedings of the 7th World Conference on Women’s Studies, Vol. 6, Issue. 1, 2021, pp.1-14 Copyright © 2021 TIIKM PUBLISHING ISSN 2424-6743 online DOI: https://doi.org/10.17501/24246743.2021.6101 FEMINIST CONSCIOUSNESS, EMPOWERMENT AND IDENTITY: CONTEXTUALIZING CHANDRAPRABHA SAIKIANI IN CONTEMPORARY ASSAM Barua S* and Lal LD Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati, India Abstract: A crusader for women’s rights, Chandraprabha Saikiani was both a torchbearer and an icon of 20th century Assam. She became synonymous with the feminist movement in Assam which was, in her days, still in an inchoate state. From her young days, she actively challenged the dominance of men in the public space. Her contribution to Assam Mahila Samitys (AMS) (Assam Women Associations) from 1920s to 1960s is crucial in understanding the position of modern Assamese women. During her period, women’s movement saw a change in guard from men to women. ‘Why in our society the women are confined in a cage like this? Why should you sit in that cage like structure? Who dares to prevent you from sitting outside it?’ Saikiani, through questioning mundane discrimination against women, constructed feminist consciousness. This consciousness was further reflected in the freedom struggle and the women’s movement in colonial Assam. This paper attempts to analyze her understanding of feminist consciousness, empowerment and identity in colonial Assam using a Critical Discourse Analysis of her select writings such as Doibajna Duhita (The Brahmin’s Daughter), ‘Unnoti Pothot Russ Nari’ etc. While doing so, this paper also attempts to locate Chandraprabha Saikiani in the contemporary Assamese society. -
Status of Women Journalists in the Print Media
CHAPTER-1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY STATUS OF WOMEN JOURNALISTS IN THE PRINT MEDIA By Pamela Bhagat INTRODUCTION The project on the Status of Women Journalists in the Print Media was initiated by the National Commission for Women to look into issues affecting the role of women working in the print media. As part of a broader study on working women in India, it was executed by the Press Institute of India (PII), through empirical data that was collected from almost all the States and Union Territories of the country. The objective of the research was to examine the problems and issues confronting women working in the media, to gauge the extent of direct and indirect discrimination in the workplace and to identify contemporary issues that need to be addressed. METHODOLOGY The research was coordinated by me with the support of media representatives from various regions - Linda Chhakchhuak from Shillong, Rajashri Dasgupta from Calcutta, Sushmita Malaviya from Bhopal, R. Akhileshwari from Hyderabad and Surekha Sule from Mumbai - who together formed a National Study Group. The National Study Group assisted with the design and implementation of the 20-page questionnaire. Usha Rai, Deputy Director, Press Institute of India, guided and steered the group. A brain storming session with a focus group of women journalists in Delhi preceded the study, to ensure that the questionnaire was suitable and that critical aspects were addressed. The questionnaire was then pilot tested to iron out discrepancies and ambiguities. Experiences from the field surveys are outlined later in the report. SAMPLING AND RESPONSE RATE A total of 410 women working in the print media responded. -
