For simplicity the information has been presented in four different books. Book 1 – Mythical to Viking Era (? – 1250) Book 2 – Folkunga Dynasty (1250 – 1523) Book 3 – Vasa Dynasty (1523 – 1751) Book 4 – Recent Royalty (1751 – Present) Book 4 covers the most recent history including the wars with Russia that eventually led to the loss of Finland to Russia and the emergence of Finland as an independent nation as well as the history of Sweden during World Wars I and II. A list is included showing our relationship with the royal family according to the lineage from Nils Kettilsson Vasa. The relationship with the spouses is also shown although these are from different ancestral lineages. Text is included for those which are highlighted in the list. University of Southampton FACULTY OF HUMANITIES Becoming a Queen in Early Modern Europe East and West KATARZYNA KOSIOR Doctor of Philosophy in History 2017 ~ 2 ~ UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ABSTRACT FACULTY OF HUMANITIES History Doctor of Philosophy BECOMING A QUEEN IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE: EAST AND WEST Katarzyna Kosior My thesis approaches sixteenth-century European queenship through an analysis of the ceremonies and rituals accompanying the marriages of Polish and French queens consort: betrothal, wedding, coronation and childbirth. The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus. -

1 R0YAL SCOUTS -4- © Piet J. Kroonenberg, Amsterdam, March, 2006. SWEDEN When in Sweden the first Scouting troops were founded members of the Royal Family showed an interest and got involved. One of them was Folke Bernadotte, Earl of Wisborg, (1895-1948), a cousin of King Gustaf V Adolf (1858-1950). He was one of the first Swedish Scouts and later played an important role in national and international Scouting. He served his country as a diplomat and during the 2e World War (1939-1945). He was vice-president of the Swedish Red Cross and visited, on behalf of the International Red Cross, in Germany the camps in which the soldiers of Western Allies were held as Prisoners of War. He came in contact with the notorious Nazi Heinrich Himmler, the Reichsfûhrer SS, responsible for the concentration and destruction camps. When in Spring 1945 Nazi Germany was on the verge of total collapse, thanks to this contact – after difficult negotiations - he was able to collect and save approximately 15.000 concentration camp inmates. With the well-known Swedish White Busses they were transported to neutral Sweden via Nazi occupied Denmark. In 1947, he was appointed as the United Nations mediator for Palestine, where, after the founding of the State of Israel war had broken out. In 1948 he succeeded in arranging an armistice between the Israeli’s and the surrounding Arab countries. But in Jerusalem, on September 17th 1948 Folke Bernadotte was assassinated by a zionist, underground group, which considered him to be too pro-Arab. When his burial procession moved through the streets of Stockholm members of the Swedish Red Cross and Scouts marched in the procession. -

Rydlówka 24, Kraków Introduction Between 1963 and 1970, as part of its series Elementa ad Fontiun Editiones, the Polish Historical Institute in Rome issued Documenta polonica ex Archivo Generali Hispaniae in Simancas, seven volumes of documents pertinent to the history of Poland edited by Rev. Walerian Meysztowicz.1 The collections in Simancas are not only important for understanding Polish-Spanish relations, but also very effectively illustrate Poland’s foreign policy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the role the country played in the international arena. In this respect, the Spanish holdings are second only to the Vatican archives. In terms of the quality and quantity of information, not even the holdings of the Vienna archives illuminate Poland’s European politics on such a scale. Meysztowicz was well aware of this, opening his introduction (Introductio) to the first part of the publication with the sentence: “Res gestae Christianitatis sine Archivo Septimacensi cognosci vix possunt.”2 1 Elementa ad Fontium Editiones, vol. -

The author deals with the history of the founding myth of Czech Slavs from its oldest record- ing to the end of the Middle Ages. The legend of the origin of Czechs lived on in three phases of the Middle Ages. Stage one was captured by Cosmas of Prague († 1125) in the oldest nation-state chronicle. Another milestone was the founding legend in the Old Czech Chronicle recorded by so-called Dalimil from the early second decade of the 14th century. The founding myth changed fundamentally in two of- ficial chronicles which were written under the authority of Charles IV (1346-1378), the “Bohemian Chronicle” by Giovanni de’ Marignolli of Florence and the other “Bohemian Chronicle” by Přibík Pulka- va of Radenín. Keywords: Bohemia; mediaeval historiography; founding myths; Cosmas of Prague; so-called Dalimil; Giovanni de’ Marignolli; Přibík Pulkava of Radenín Formující se národy si při hledání své identity od nejstarších dob kladly otázky o svém původu, o tom, jak vzniklo jejich jméno, jak se dostaly na místo, kde působily, jak „vznikli“ jejich panovníci a instituce. Odpovědi na tyto otázky podá- vali pěvci, vypravěči, a konečně historikové národních dějin1. Topos „původu ná- roda“ – origo gentis – byl vedle topu situs terrarum (Bláhová 1998, s. 542-544) povinnou součástí úvodu ke státně národním dějinám (K termínu srv. Schmale 1985, s. 126) často označovaným také origo gentis2. Pokud jde o původ národa, zachycovali autoři někdy jen ústní tradici, pověsti předávané po generace v písních, eposech a jiných vyprávěních, jindy autoři národních dějin tyto odpovědi sami „hledali“ (a „nalézali“). -

Nalezl jsem kroniku u knze starého v Boleslavi, ta všecky jiné oslaví, ta mne jist o Vlastiných bojích zpraví, 30. mnoho neznámého vypraví. Proto, budešli pražskou nebo bevnovskou kroniku tím se dobe ujisti, [ísti, že jest v ní mén položeno, ale slov více mluveno. 35. Opatovická — ta asto bloudí, jestliže i více povídá, pec t obloudí. -
